The Spurs Just Got Older and Less Attractive In One Fell Swoop
No surprise, we re-signed KT. I had a girlfriend once, Katie, who went by KT and she was considerably more attractive than Kurt Thomas. Especially when she was 18, 19 and on a lot of crank. A couple of years later (by the time I could seal the deal, unfortunately) she got off the drugs and gained 50 lbs, she wasn't as hot, but still hotter than Kurt Thomas.
Oh, here's the link, for the non-believers.
I'm worried Pop will banish Ian to the bench again now. That would stink and make me angry, but probably not nearly as angry as Powell, who has promised to be a fiery volcano of hate this season. Personally, I'm really excited about this.

well...
...I’m excited too, I think, depending on how long the contract is. I sincerely hope they didn’t drop a 4-year deal on KT. Two would be ideal. As long as it ends sometime before KT begins to calcify in front of our eyes (a la Findog).
Also, by resigning KT, we do two things:
1. Keep him away from the Lakers, who just lost Turiaf
2. Exponentially increase the odds that someone from an opposing team will shit themselves in fear of Ol’ Crazy Eyes going Chuck Norris on them.

Looks like a two year deal
Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available, but Thomas told the Express-News his new pact was good for the next two seasons.

some around here think KT would be more valuable than mahinmi this year. I guess this comes down to whether or not you think ian is ready for a full season of championship-caliber NBA basketball.
do you? for that matter, is KT ready?
you ain't a beauty but hey you're alright.

i like having KT around to be honest. yeah he’s old as shit, but he does try hard and does the dirty work (more than Horry can do except for a well-timed screen). Hopefully KT and Ian will share minutes and Ian will also have two great low-post defenders showing him the ropes.
if the contract is more than 2 years long, then i’ll be kind of irritated. i do like that the Lakers aren’t able to grab him though. Ugh, just writing the word Lakers creates a image in my head of a Vujabitch smug-face after he defended poor hobbled Gino in the WCF. It also makes me think of those “the machine” videos that lakers blog made.

Interesting comment from Hollinger...
...in his chat today.
Jacob (San Antonio, TX): John, please answer this question…What are my Spurs doing?? Where is the injection of athleticism we so badly needed and what is the obsession with signing all these washed-up oldies???
SportsNation John Hollinger: Were you thinking they’d trade Tim Duncan? Spurs are tied up with three big contracts to the stars and trying to stay under the tax, so they can only work around the edges. Replacing Barry with Mason gets them younger, and he and Hill should upgrade the backup PG soft spot. You’ll probably see a lot more of Ian Mahinmi, too. But some of S.A.’s plan was blown up when Splitter stayed in Europe.

This re-signing is good if Thomas goes for 8points and 8boards a night like he did with the Sonics. In fact that would be just fantastic.

This is the year KT makes the leap and turns into a scoring machine like Rasho.

Kurt will be the next Tim Duncan. He’s still young enough that he could develop. I mean, shoot, there are plenty of trees out there younger than him.

I myself think this will be the year he develops that unstoppable lean-back jumper. Y’know, like MJ did back when he was KT’s age.
So look forward to that.

I’m not concerned about Ian’s minutes with the KT signing. I would be concerned about the Spurs if they went into the season needing Ian to contribute to have a chance.
I’ll be happy if KT and Fab play just under 20 minutes a game, Tim is at 33, and Ian gets the additional 20 minutes left over from the 3-5 that we have to play Bon-Bon. Ok, that’s harsh. I like Bonner. But if he is getting more than 10-12 minutes per game, I won’t like the way the season is going. Anyway, I think even with KT there are plenty of minutes for Ian.
Question: How crazy would KT look if he was on crank?

ever watch Bumfights? there’s a certain fellow called “Bling Bling” who just might be the description you are looking for.
be advised, do not watch what he does like 20 seconds into the video (starts at -1:45 through -1:25). the rest is hilarious//sad that someone could end up like this. but i still think its awesome to watch him rap and stuff

I think there’ll be plenty of minutes for Ian once he is send back to Austin midway through the regular season. I do worry about his minutes when he’s signed back one week before the playoffs, though, but at least he’ll be able to warm up Timmy’s spot on the bench.
(Just kidding. Here’s to Ime having a monster year and giving us another ring.)

whew
upon reading the title of this thread, i began to get scared that the spurs somehow re-upped with RoHo. but i’m guessing that the title would have been more venomous had that been the case….......
i am more relieved about this than anything else. similar to hamer, im just glad LA didnt somehow scoop him up. i like that KT fit in well with the spurs quickly and i like that he can get the occasional rebound and knock down the occasional 15 footer. he’s a good foil for tim’s game.
that is about what we expected, right? im ok with that.

What? Are you settling for mediocrity? I think you might be part of the problem and not part of the solution.

you calling KT mediocre??! if he finds out, he just might drive up to austin and wrap that fanny pack around your…....err…what i mean to say is yeah – what VWolf said…..

Boo hoo
Nice signing. I am glad nobody else poached him because then the Spurs would have had to re-sign Francesca or some other terrible player. The KT re-signing was almost essential with Splitter staying in Spain. Though I like Ian, I just can’t imagine him starting, or seeing near starter’s minutes. Also, for next season, Gist is probably a garbage time player or a d-league player (if he sticks).

KT was a net positive for us last year
I’m glad to see him back. I want Ian to get more minutes, but I don’t know that we can count on him to play more than 15-20 minutes without fouling out.
I’ll be pissed if Ian sits behind KT and Fab all year, though. Get him some burn, Pop!

I would like to see Ian as Duncan’s primary backup and let KT and Fab split time at the 5. Maybe Duncan can get some rest and only average 32 minutes per game leaving the other 18 for Ian.
Let KT and Oberto take 20 minutes a piece at the pivot. Bonner can take the other 8 and fill in for Ian if he is in foul trouble.
