Summer League: Game Thread #8 (3:00 start)

I still hate the Jazz.  This game isn't going to be streamed either.  In some twisted way I am bent out of shape about it.  I'm tired, I have too much work to do, but I want to watch this damn game.

Also, it's my last chance to raise funds.  I'd like two more donations.  That would put me up to 15 total donations for the Summer League blog-a-dork-a-thon.  I'll recognize any donation between now and midnight tomorrow for my matching purposes.  Donate here.

Summer league ends tomorrow but we still have some free agents to sign.  It seems like things are really dragging right now with player movement.  I'm hoping we hear something soon.

Goddammit you beat me by eight minutes. And I specifically made a point of checking ptr before I posted to see if anyone made a thread out of it. But no, you had to just put inside some other thread. That’s horseshit man. %#&#&#&@#*x%x

Looks like somebody has a case of the Monday’s.

Haha

I didn’t think the resigning of KT merited an entire fanpost. I can’t even think of 300 characters to go along with the news.

It’s interesting – I’m old enough to remember when Kurt Thomas came in to the league and if, at that time, you told me that he would end up a journeyman big who played for 6 teams (and primarily thought of as a defensive player), I’d have slapped you. He was a force in college, scoring from everywhere and owning the paint. I never thought he would be a HoF guy, but I certainly expected more than what he’s done.

i think that KT was only of only a very select handful of players to lead the country in scoring and rebounds in the same season at TCU. he was a beast. maybe hank gathers was the only other person to do it?

I may be wrong, but I thought Xavier McDaniel did it at Wichita State twice?

I LOVE SWPL

I swear, I think like half of them fit me. I am so white.

But yes, I’m an anal stickler for spelling and grammar. Unless I get stuff wrong. Then it’s like, eh, whatever.

Hey Stampler...

Team USA… going to win gold? In basketball, that is.

I think they might lose one game. The question is will it be in the group stages to somebody like Spain or will it be when it counts. They’ve got a lot of guards, but not too many bigs, so hopefully that will do them in. Offensively it’s going to be hard to stop them unless the referees don’t give them shit and make them shoot just jumpers.

The two guys that I feel really are going to push them over the top are Kobe, who’s hellbent on winning, and Paul, who’s the best PG in the planet. I didn’t think much of Team USA until they got Paul.

Now the only way they lose is if they beat themselves with selfishness and ballhoggery. if they give it to Paul and let him do his thing, they’ll be very hard to beat, although a bunch of their guys, Kobe, Wade, LeBron, I don’t know if any of them know how to play without the ball.

by Aaronstampler on Jul 22, 2008 3:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed

i am still wary of lebron and kobe (don’t ever watch wade play on the lolheat) and their inability to do anything without the ball in their hands, i’m not getting my hopes up. also, Kidd is the starter and he’s shit, like, a big heap of it compared to scrappydoo.

I heard today that Tyson Chandler is no longer able to play for Team USA because of some toe injury. so that uhhhh, puts us pretty damn soft up front with only Raptor (bosh) and Superman (howard).

just read they are considering Kevin Durant as a replacement of Chandler…wtf.

i honestly do not see the gold coming our way. too many egos are in the way.

USA also has Boozer, along with D-Ho and Raptor Face. But still, 3 guys out of 12 that are considered either PF or C? Yikes
We’ll see what happens. The U.S. is capable of a gold medal, but I don’t think they will ever be a sure thing again. Just from their group, Greece and Spain have about as good of a chance as the Americans. Don’t count out Argentina from the other group, either.

by Gino20 on Jul 22, 2008 8:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

boozer can’t play defense though, unless you consider hacking at anything within his parameters. its sad they are considering putting lebron at power foward, just dumb.

durant is shit right now he’s just a “god damn rook”, i don’t see why they aren’t searching for another who can do something to help us up front. D-Ho is still coming back from his sternum fracture, lebron just sprained his ankle, i’m not feeling it.

oh wait, never mind, it’s already over.

Spain won 90-88.

Manu had 18 pts on 1/5 from 2, 4/5 from 3.

You’ll never believe this, but Ducks is hammering him on Spurstalk.

Spurs win

It almost feels like I watched it.

Here is the box score. Scroll all the way down.

Ian didn’t play.

George went back to his bricklaying ways.

Malik had a big game with 17 points.

Gist had 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Tolliver shot lights out.

It appears that George had a hard time with Acie Law. Acie had 27 points and went to the line 11 times. No real surprise there. George was playing his 7th game in 9 days.

by AusTechSpur on Jul 22, 2008 6:03 PM CDT   0 recs

well....

Acie Law is also a badass…. his game is uglier than Manu’s, and not quite as effective, but it’s very high end stuff. Plus, his balls are the size of Volkswagen Rabbits…

that manu quote in your sig

I’m gonna need to see a link to a reputable site that quotes Manu as saying that before I believe it.

That being said, I couldn’t stop laughing after reading it; and I must have read it about four or five times before I could bring myself to believe that it’s possible that he actually, really said those words.

Too hilarious—even if it’s a made up quote it’s just too funny.

I can imagine it all

The look on her face, the end of the interview, the laughs in the locker room as someone (prolly Barry) explained to Manu what it was that he had said, Manu’s explanations falling on deaf ears. It’s too beautiful.

about Hill on ESPN.com

Just was checking the NBA section on ESPN and lo behold an entire article on George Hill…aaaah!! the joy of living in Europe…. can get access to some news earlier than you guys living in North America ;)

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=RMR-Day4-080723

“Hill takes first steps in climbing the Spurs’ ladder

By Tim Buckley
Special to ESPN.com

.................... At 1-of-7 from the field on the day, Hill’s oft-contested shot wasn’t exactly falling. Such was also the case during three games at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where he hit just 2-for-25.

But during those last two minutes Tuesday, with the Spurs down by three points when he re-entered the game, Hill merely dished to teammate Anthony Tolliver for a 3-pointer from the left corner, drew an offensive foul, deflected an inbounds pass and hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds remaining to deliver the lead.

That’s not all.

Hill then clamped down on defense in the final few seconds, tying up Acie Law IV for a jump ball as the usual Hawks backup point drove the lane, and, moments later, soaring to win the tap from Law and seal the win…....”

by spurred on Jul 23, 2008 2:35 AM CDT   0 recs

I am tired of gritty guys who can’t shoot. The Spurs could use a guy like that at the 2, 3 or 4, but not really at the 1. Let’s hope Hill relearns how to get the ball in the basket.

true that

we need more scoring threats. i don’t like seeing Timmy get doubled for entire games without the opposing team paying for it. tired of seeing us laying brick after brick
