Summer League: Game Thread #7 (1:00 start on Monday)
Finally, a day off.
We are 6 games into the blog-a-dork-a-thon and while things started off great, they have ground to a halt. I have gone 8, yes 8, straight quarters without a donation. So, I'm looking to get one tomorrow.
I'm not going to tell you what I think of the shoddy way the NBA runs its online coverage. Ok, I will. What a crock of shit? Who runs a business this way? Did they put some 22 year old in charge of their nba.com business. The Rocky Mountain Revue links don't work. Hell, they don't do anything. The NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports links sometimes work. Sometimes you get a screen that says, "Live Event". What they really mean to say is "this is on a 30 minute delay. So just hang tight". The best part is that in the archive, if you go to watch old games, they don't edit out the 30-minute delay. Dumbasses. Bush leaguers. It's only because I am such a complete loser that they manage to still get my business.
As for basketball, 6 games is a lot of summer league to watch. It's not always the prettiest. I think George has resigned himself to shooting like crap during the Summer. He's not even looking to score. He was 2-6 from the field and a disappointing 2-6 from the line.
Ian was in foul trouble last night finishing with 12 points and 6 board in 23 minutes. In that time he picked up 7 fouls.
Devin Green was the big performer in game 6 against the D-League Ambassadors. He ha 19 points on 5-9 shooting -- 2-5 from deep -- with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. He also provided the clutch play of the night blocking a shot in the final minute.
Gist sat this one out.
Hairston didn't really do anything to stand out. He had a couple nice passes, but it would take a real talent evaluator to say whether or not he's showing anything.
Anthony Tolliver came back to earth shooting 4-13 -- 3-8 from long distance -- with 7 rebounds in 35 minutes. I think his defense will keep him off the team. He's been getting abused on a regular basis. I can't see the Spurs signing him, but he may have a future in the NBA. I could see him being hell in the Euroleague though.
In the game thread Saturday night, I posted a chunk of an article from Marc Stein. Carlos Delfino signed with a Russian club for $3 million Euros a year. Because they do their contracts NET of taxes and because of the exchange rate that works out to about a $9 million/year contract. For Carlos Delfino. Rumor has it that the same team is offering Garbajosa the same money. If you don't think the NBA is going to be effected by this, then you are crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next couple years you see the NBA losing some better American players overseas. And don't give me that "the best want to play against the best" crap. It's a business. We all know it.
If Carlos Delfino is worth $9 mil/year, what would a European club be able to offer LeBron?

Question #1 for Stampler...
What did you think of the way the Transformers looked in the recent live-action movie? I’m not so down with them looking like giant mechanical insects with all their complicated H.R. Geiger looking doodads and gizmos.

I thought it was crap and I don’t buy all this “re-imagining” nonsense. Either do it right or don’t do it at all. Sure, you could have made slight modifications based on car-makes and things like that, so if a Porsche is a Dodge Viper it wouldn’t bother me too much as long as they got the color scheme right, but everything was way off – especially the faces – and it’s like they didn’t even try.
Maybe they thought they couldn’t sell any toys if the movie guys looked like the old guys, but for me it was totally off putting. Really just thinking about it makes me angry.
If it was too fucking hard to do, then don’t do it. Don’t half ass it.

Question #2
When you used to transform your Transformers as a kid, did you make the cool “kee koo koo koo” sound from the cartoon? Would you try to draw the sound effect out slowly so that you’d have time to finish transforming the robot whilst still making the sound? Not that I did that or anything.

There are lots and lots of embarrassing episodes from my childhood. Hell there are lots and lots of embarrassing episodes from my adulthood. For example, back in my early 20s, when I was flush with cash due to a malfunctioning moral compass, I bought like a 150 Transformers on e-bay, overpaying grossly for all of them. Now they’re all in a box somewhere at grandma’s house.

Question #3
Did you have any issues with the inconsistent scale of the Transformers, e.g. Megatron as a Walther pistol being many times larger than Windcharger, a car, or Optimus Prime, an 18-wheeler, being much larger than Starscream, a fighter jet?
Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!
by tomasito on Jul 20, 2008 3:05 PM CDT 0 recs
I didn’t mind the size of Megatron’s size relative to Windcharger’s. But I thought more thought should’ve been put into scaling overall.
I think they should have thought ahead and made both Megs and Optimus a lot bigger than they did. They were amongst the biggest year one robots, in 1984, but by year two or three, they looked like medium-sized compared to the others.
Also, I thought while it was okay for the Bumblebees, Brawns of the world to be small, they should’ve made the medium sized cars like Jazz, Ironhide, Bluestreak etc. bigger.
I thought (and still think) Ironhide and Ratchet should’ve actually been robots instead of the stupid things they transformed into outside of vehicle mode.
I think you can solve the megatron scaling problem by also including in the box a mini-version of him as a gun that other characters could hold.
Really, I (and I’m sure most everyone) have like a thousand different ideas how to make the toyline better, but I guess the idea is to make it cheap and profitable and they did that and we bought it, so I guess they know what they’re doing.

FYI
What we know as G1 Transformers were actually an amalgam of several separate Japanese toy lines. One of the lines involved household objects transforming into robots: that’s Soundwave, his tapes, and Megatron. One of the other lines had toys that turned into robots: Bumblebee, Windcharger, Huffer, etc. The last toy line was vehicles that transformed into robots. Most of the Autobots, and the Decepticon jets, were from this line.

yes, an unfortunate reality. Big bad Hasbro bought out a bunch of smaller toy-lines and put out a new product under one toy-line. They also basically stole the robotech design for Jetfire, even though he looked way way different in the cartoon.

I figured you knew that...
But I put that in for the benefit of other people reading this thread. Though the “benefit” is dubious at best.
It’s unfortunate too that the two coolest G1 robots, Jetfire and Shockwave, weren’t featured hardly at all in the cartoons.
The Jetfire / Veritech thing is confusing to me. How could you buy rights to make a toy, but not rights to broadcast it on TV? It’s strange that the law would dictate such a thing.

I think it’s because they didn’t buy the rights. At least I don’t think they did. More people watch the cartoons than buy the toy (jetfire was expensive and hard to find, relatively speaking).
I think if they showed a robot that looks like a robotech robot on a transformers cartoon, the jig would’ve been up in millions of households, particularly Japanese ones.

Euros flush with dirty Rusky money...
It’s really a bigger deal than people are making it out to be right now, so I’m glad to see it getting some attention here. Obviously we have first hand experience with the Splitter situation, so it’s not surprising to see PTR ahead of the curve.
Two points on the situation. First, I wonder if that didn’t play a role in the FO’s decision to draft 3 Americans this year. Quite a departure for RC and the boys.
Second, I’m not so sure about a fear of top American players going overseas. It seems to me that a guy like Delfino is expected to be top dog-type in Euro-leagues and thus is getting the equivalent of a max-contract there. I think at the high-end, the NBA is still able to pay more for players. Whether or not that continues to be true is a larger macro-economic issue that will play out over the years to come, but I don’t expect American power to be diminished to such a point that we witness some mass-defection of American talent overseas. Additionally, foreign players have less of a cultural connection to the States and in some cases a greater connection to Europe/Russia (though its arguable with Delfino since he is Argentinian). The reverse holds true for American players.
On that last point, did anyone else read about the issue with Tiago’s sister? I may have even read it following a link posted here, and if so I apologize for the duplication. But apparently his sister is sick and that did play at least some role in his decision to stay overseas to be closer to family and their doctors.

its really only a matter of time before legitimate competition increases in any aspect of life. sports, business, whatever. very hard to hold onto to the top spot for very long in this day and age.
basketball-wise, it will defintely change the landscape for those marginal american players who have gone overseas to develop. with some higher-skilled foreign players heading that way, domestic doors for more american players might be opened.

This nugget from Bostjan Nachbar, who just signed in Russia:
“The NBA had better be careful,” Nachbar said. “European teams are offering a lot of money. It’s much more, considering there are no taxes, than what I could make signing for the mid-level exception.”

Apparantly Josh Childress is seriously thinking about a 3 year/20 million dollar offer from a Greek team.

I don’t want to be stereotypical or anything, but Josh Childress doesn’t strike me as having any particular Greek heritage or attachment. I’ve been telling everyone I see (I’ve only been arrested a few times for accosting strangers) that this was going to happen. I guess any market economist would have told you that as well.
Could it eventually be beneficial for the NBA, American basketball, and World basketball? What if the NBA became like La Liga (Spain’s soccer league), probably but not obviously the best in the world? OR what if the NBA became the English Premier League, popular in America due to its preponderance of Americans, but no longer the best in the world? What if Global Icon Lebron signs for Tau Ceramica or CSKA Moscow for 20 million tax-free euros? It’s hard to Imagine that the FIBA World Championships could get to be on the same level as the World Cup, but what if? What if it was just a step below it?

So, if I read this right
This is from the yahoo sports article above.
Childress flew to Greece late Sunday and is scheduled to meet with Olympiakos officials on Monday. Childress, 25, is so flustered with the Hawks’ refusal to make a sign-and-trade deal to another team, one source familiar with his thinking believes there’s "better than a 50-50 chance" he’ll sign with Olympiakos. The team also will cover the Greek taxes for Childress, making it even
more lucrative.
That 3 year $20 mill is only accounting for the exchange rate conversion. It isn’t accounting for the fact that FIBA contracts are done “NET” meaning, net of taxes. So this is probably a 3 year/13.5 million euro deal (I think the exchange rate is 1.5 to 1). If Delfino’s 3 mill Euro a year deal is equal to 9 mill dollars. That means Childress is getting 40.5 million dollars over 3 year. That’s just under $14 million/year. That’s a BIG ASS contract.

some calculated perspective
I was going to crunch the numbers, but ill just say i dont think your figures add up quite right… Also, the article doesnt mention the 20mil figure as net. If it is net, the total an American team would have to offer to equal (assuming a 1/3 rate for FICA) is 30 mil over 3. Hell of a lot of money for childress.

Eh, my math was sloppy. I barely followed myself. I see you saw the part about the net.
Delfino signed a 3 yr/ 9 million euro deal. So 1 year = 3 million euro. The contract is NET and the article said that it was equivalent to 9 million dollars per year. So, between the exchange rate and taxes that’s a multiplier of 3 when comparing contracts.
Childress’ contract above says 3 year/20 million dollars but it clearly isn’t NET. So, if the exchange rate is 1:1.5 that means it is a 3 year/13.5 million euro deal. If you use the 3 multiplier that is a 40.5 million dollar contract.

i guess its the use of the 3X multiplier that is confusing. was that the delfino article where they used it? im thinking it might be a bit high, as journalists tend to hype these things. it may be that the greek team will end up paying that amount after you factor in the euro-taxes, but for josh to receive the same amount, in net, from an american team it would likely be closer to a 30 mil contract.
KD, as usual, provides nice perspective

The 3 X multiplier basically accounts for the exchange rate and the US tax rate. It has nothing to do with the Greek tax rate.
Federal income tax on those contracts is 40% I believe. That doesn’t include any applicable state income taxes.
So, in the Childress contract the 1.5 exhange rate makes it a 13.5 euro contract 20.0 dollars. The bump to 40 dollars means they are counting a 50% tax rate. Which seems high by a little. Suffice to say it is at least a 35 million dollar deal.

not to be a dick and keep pressing the point, but the highest tax rate (as percentage of total taxable income) is 35%, thanks to tax breaks and the like in recent years. in the 90s, the highest tax bracket was about 40 percent, and stayed close to that point until about 2003. this is possibly why the articles are over-inflating tax payments. you can plug in numbers on this site:
http://www.moneychimp.com/features/tax_brackets.htm
so if you plug in 30mil, taxes come out to a little over 10mil, leaving you a net just shy of 20mil. again, still a lot to pay for childress

This is what David Stern had to say on to the world wide leader:
The so-called euro trend appears to be merely a blip on David Stern’s radar.ESPN.com’s John Hollinger asked Stern in June if the league was worried the rookie salary cap may be preventing some teams from signing players they’ve drafted because a European team could offer better terms.
“No, I don’t think so,” the commissioner said. “In most cases that is not accurate.”
“Sometimes it’s hard to know with our team whether they’re not just as happy to have a player complete his contract, develop until exactly the right time. I’ve seen [Tiago] Splitter play in the European Final Four. He’s a heck of a player. I’m sure he currently
—he’s under contract for another year, isn’t he? He signed a new contract.“You know, there are plenty of players who have decided that it would be, Frederic Weis comes to mind, that it would be better to stay, play a shorter season and do what they’re going to do.”
“So I think your generalization of that is not exactly accurate. But we’re not concerned about that. If players actually stay in Europe because they can earn more, that’s fine. We think that European basketball, which we try to support, might be the better for it, and that’s good.”
Yeah, David, it’s not a problem. No problems in the NBA at all. As a matter of fact, I think it would be better if we didn’t have any foreign players in the NBA because their game isn’t marketable. Americans like to watch American players over handle the ball and jack up terrible shots. I mean, our Finals ratings this year were through the roof. We’re goo.

RMR site says that its not streaming the SA-Dallas game today. any other ways to watch this game that anyone knows about?
i think you guys might be going a little too far over the top on this mass exodus of players to other professional leagues. sure, there might well be some medium names, or even a semi-big names to do it. americans have already filtered into sports leagues in other countries and vice versa here. maybe the NBA won’t have as big of a “talent” advantage as in year’s past – but we are a long, long way from anyone stealing that mantel form the league – poorly run or not.
either way, leagues and teams are gonna do everything they can to make themselves better and win. sometimes that means that they can pluck a player from another league – but they had also better be careful not to over-extend. history is littered with folded leagues that have done that very thing.
i wonder which american baller will go overseas and fuch up first when they are either nailed in the head with a flying coin, or publicly disgraced by the local media?

G.I. Joe the cartoon was actually retarded if you think about it. These guys are supposed to be the best of the best of the best killers in the world, and nobody ever died.
My G.I. Joe experience was very weird. I think it was just the builder in me, but all I ever wanted to do was build the vehicles, then take them apart and build them again. This led to accidentally breaking many of them. Also, the Cobra vehicles were way cooler than the Joe ones.
