Summer League: Game Thread #5 (8:00 start)
On we go in to the great wide open. Errrr, um off to Salt Lake City I mean.
You know the drill. Donate here. If you don't know the drill, then Donate here.
I don't have high hopes for these games being available on the internet. Nothing at the Rocky Mountain Revue site is giving me a warm fuzzy.
UPDATE: Happy day. If you go to the link to the revue buried in the top middle of the site is a 'watch live' button. You can get the feed there.
If they aren't "televised" then the blog-a-dork-a-thon will get interesting. I'll have to be extra creative.
For tonight, I already had plans for an activity during the game. SiMA is going to interview me. I know, not very exciting but it's something. He's on his own for questions. I placed no boundaries on what he could ask. ONLY SiMA gets to ask questions. At least, I won't answer other questions. I can't keep anybody from posting.
I'm going for a format where he can dig deeper into answers that I give. Maybe it will be interesting. Maybe it will suck. I do know this though. It won't suck worse than last night's game.

tonite’s show – getting to know your Aus Tech Spur…..that be an interesting read, but i’ll probably have to catch up on it tomorrow morning…..........speaking of, i gotta catch up on my summer league archived feeds – but i did watch the knicks game on NBA-TV and gotta agree with all the stuff you mentioned about nate robinson and whatever offense they were trying to run. holy smokes. they had half their team out there and still got whipped because the spurs team just D-ed them up. i felt bad for them.
on a semi-related note: you also mentioned the errors permeating the summer league rosters and such. dear god, you should try watching NBA TV announcer Rick Kamla for about 15 seconds. in that length of time you will get 2-3 mis-pronunciations. I realize the guys in Summer League are not marquee names, but for god sakes man, do just a smidge of homework….or at least listen to the PA announcer and check yourself out.
dude is brutal.
also trying to like George Hill, but I’m not sold yet. He has the look and he has the handle, but he needs some work. i realize that he is also making the adjustment from scorer/handler to just handler. might take him a bit.
Gist (or jist as the knicks roadcaster says it) is a banger. i’m starting to like him as well. not feeling the same about malik hairston. he doesnt look to be NBA ready.
tolliver and roger friggin powell look good….cannot believe that pud from illinois roger powell figured out how to shoot…....
perhaps the thing that George Hill is missing...
is the ability to heretofore put the ball IN the basket, and not AROUND the basket….

this is going to sound awful, but who’s Sima again?
Also, I gotta work tonight, so no blogging for me. I will be with you all in spirit and hopefully George Hill will boost his .080 shooting percentage. Am I crazy to think as a fat short white guy I could shoot better than .080 in summer league? I mean, I play twice a week so I have a general idea of what shots I’m capable and not capable of making and I’d pretty much just take open threes. I think I can knock down 15% of those from NBA range.
SiMA => SergeantInManusArmy
George is really struggling with when to shoot. So, in that sense you would have the advantage on him. Just for the record, I am fairly certain the ability to shoot a basketball is ethnically neutral. It might even be height and gender neutral, but I’m not sure.

did you know....
that showering twice daily can actually be bad for your body, as it prevents said body from reforming skin cells. You’re effectively skinning yourself alive. Fucking gnarly…

That’s interesting. I want to know how it actually ‘prevents’ your body from reforming skin cells though, that sounds crazy. Like a CMoney video or something.
by SgtinManusArmy on Jul 18, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions
well...here's the heavy dope...
during a day, your body will shed the dead skin cells (they rub off on your clothes, in the shower, etc.) and will grow new ones, much like blood cells and shit. When you take multiple showers, the scrubbing will damage the newly forming skin cells before theyre good to go. The effect is roughly the same as being out in the sun too long, and drying them out.

The goal tonight is 4 donations. Four $2 donations. I don’t even care if it is the same person. As a matter of fact, if the same person said they donated $2 every quarter in the thread, but really only donated once then I’ll still count it. This is YOUR opportunity to earn serious undeserved brownie points. I know the married men in the house will be jumping on this.

I’m here. Just got out of the shower. All of scrap’s shower talk made me long for a little hydro-skinning myself. Can’t figure out how to get the feed though. I don’t see a ‘watch now’ link.
And that ‘feeling a little frisky’ comment sounded more like a threat than a warning. I’m starting to reconsider this Q&A.

Before tip-off, check out the Jazz Dancers. (I refuse to call them the “Nu-Skin Dancers,” because that’s just retarded.) Nice things in Utah.
The interesting thing is that they don’t look skanky. I like my dancers to look skankier. Like the Toros dancers.
Nu-Skin Dancers is not only retarded, it’s creepy and repugnant.
I also think it is interesting that they are completely clothed. Very un-NBA-ish.

Tatum, #1 for the Spurs, is practicing pull-up 2’s from just in side the arc. He dribbles, jukes, then launches. He either just made 10 straight or air-balled 10 straight. I’m going with the former.

Well, I think I will like the Powell signing. Everything I have read points to the type of guy that fits in well. Hits the open three, good effort, good shot selection, etc.
Other than that, I approve of the fact that we haven’t signed Horry. Hill I don’t know about. And I don’t think we will be able to judge it for a while.

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 18, 2008 8:21 PM CDT reply actions
Nothing in this offseason has been bad yet. But it’s not over. I’m not surprised that we didn’t sign Brent Barry. I don’t think Pop ever really trusted him after the 2006 series against the Mavs.
With Mason being our only signing there isn’t a log to judge. Shoot, very few guys throughout the league have signed. There was a lot of media activity with Baron and Brand but then it got real quiet.

Is Eva too short to be "hot?" Is she, in her sprite-like state, actually just "really, really good-looking?"
Short and hot are two totally unrelated qualities in my book.
Some time during the season Stampler had an article with a picture of her in it. It was smokin’. I just sat there staring at it. It was so bad that I was hiding me infatuation with the photo from her.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 18, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions
She’s adorable, no doubt. I just often wonder if you can be simultaneously 4’3” and “hot.” Pictures put her next to smaller things, like miniature trees, just to put her in proportion.

I think it is solid. It doesn’t excite so that I run out and buy League Pass. But that’s not what I expect either. I think it is a sad aspect of the offseason that a lot of teams try to sell tickets and do really stupid shit doing it. Say, um, Baron Davis.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 18, 2008 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, Shaq was all about selling tickets.
Baron was going to get the Clippers into the playoffs even with Brand. It’s the one thing I’m glad our FO has been good enough, and lucky enough with Jason Kidd, to stay away from.

You can’t. A blog is chronologically based. You would have to keep re-posting it. I was very sad to see the PtR map disappear because I knew a lot of regulars never saw it. The quotes page, along with Stampler’s nickname page, would be great reference type pages to always have available. The PtR format just doesn’t support that.

Shit, I just lost my response. Coming soon.

Manu is going to be interesting. His contract ends after ‘10 and I don’t know if the Spurs will sign him for big money at the age of 33. I see the Spurs trying to sign him to a 3 year deal at round 6-7 mill. If they do, then I think they would go after somebody in the 10-12 range.
But, that all assumes that the economics of the NBA stays the same. That might not happen. The NBA hasn’t felt the budget crunch from energy prices that we are feeling. I think the cap will go down. I think the dollar will get weaker. The implications to the NBA will be interesting.

Are you saying you value chemistry over talent?
He definitely values chemistry over talent, and frankly, I agree with that, as long as the differential isn’t ridiculous. Look at the results of this year’s Spurs: they made the WCF, beating a more talented Hornets team, and were very close against a more talented Lakers team.
Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!
I value a healthy mix/balance. I often get the feeling that Pop is completely focused on chemistry alone, that’s where that came from.

Somebody commented on my comment that Nate Robinson was a no-talent ass-clown that we won the dunk contest so he must be a talented ass-clown.
I’m saying dunking, jumping, and speed are not basketball talents. They just AREN’T the same thing. There is athleticism, there is talent, and there is experience.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 18, 2008 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree with you. I’ve never been big on dunking either, but I think Pop is at the far end of the spectrum. I think dunking is a small example of athletisicm, which is not often a word linked with Pop’s SPURS.

What does the league need to do to counteract the recent practice of foreign players opting to stay out of the NBA to make far more money with their own respective clubs?
Here’s my idea: for every year the player sits out, the amount of their rookie scale increases, until after three years, at which point you can pay them whatever you want.
Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!
I think the league is screwed. Splitter is making like 8 times what he would make as a rookie with the Spurs. What they don’t report is that he’s making as much as the #1 pick in the draft. Think about that.
The NBA has kind of screwed themselves with the rookie slotting of contracts now that the Euros have money and the dollar is weak.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jul 18, 2008 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions
It’s tough, but great players want to test themselves in the NBA, so I think the best will always want to come over. Besides, it’s a vast improvement over the NFL, where Ryan Leaf can make a bajillion dollars more than 10 year vets.

Bring in the hitchhiker from CMoney’s movie.
Or, more realistically, less music during actual game play, less vigilance from the ushers, less goofiness from the Coyote. Maybe bring back the “Cotton Eye Joe” song they used to play back at the Hemisfair.
Or they could coat all the ceilings with asbestos, like in the old Hemisfair. That would surely intimidate me.

Great question.
1. Build some bars and restaurants around the place. People have to make a night of it. Going to a Spurs game should be special.
2. I really, really, really fucking hate all the pumped in noise. Attending a game is so obnoxious. Too many of the fans see the timeouts as the time to enjoy. That’s wrong. No timeout shows. Get the fans focused on teh game.
3. They need to have good fan appreciation nights. Like ‘Dart Night’ where they give the first 10000 fans darts. Or Jarts night would be even better. I’m even thinking they could do “hairy back night”.

From ATS
I think Pop values basketball talent. Basketball talent is a LOT different than athletic. Dunking is not a basketball talent. Hitting a jumper is. Being able to dribble is. Being able to box out is. I think Pop values those things.
Well, athleticism and basketball talented must be related on some level. Because the older and less athletic RoHo, Fin, Bruce, and Stoudamire got, the less ability they had to dribble, make jumpers, and box out.
Running and jumping at an NBA level involves quick-twitch muscles. Over time you lose those. Some guys never have them to begin with. Finley used to be able to drive and jump, he can’t do it anymore. Horry neither. Also, while there are a few flat-footed shooters out there, most guys shoot with their legs, so when you’re tired or have lost your legs, like Fin, you can’t shoot as well. Not only that, but when you can’t get as much separation from your man as you used to, you put up more contested shots.
There are very, very few Steve Kerr-type specialists in the NBA and no serious team could afford to have more than one on their roster because they have so many limitations. Guys like Horry and Finley always depended on their athleticism to succeed and when it was gone, it hurt them.
It was wrong of Pop to assume Fin could simply knock down open shots like a Kerr because Fin’s career shooting percentage was always inflated by A) Dallas’ run-and-gun offense with Nash getting him easy shots and B) his ability to get to the rim, dunk, and get fast break points. As a Spur he was just taking jumpers, often very long or very contested, and he’s not a good enough shooter to succeed like that.
Horry meanwhile used to, at one time, be able to rebound and guard some people. He can’t do that anymore and all he takes are fadeaway threes. He can’t shoot because he can’t jump and he has a chronic bad shoulder. I really can’t stomach him being on the team another year, so hopefully he’ll have the dignity to retire or at the very least, go to the Mavs.
Agreed. Age, espeically old age, does effect a person’s basketball talent.

George was 6-14 last night. That brings his 4 game total to, let’s see, 8-39. Dang, that’s over 20%.

ATS: i was gonna look the other way on your brent barry comments, but then i read the whole fanny pack thing and….......well, festival or not, that just aint good. get yourself some cargo shorts or put stuff in your wife’s purse for god sakes!
i mean, what else could you need to carry other than the following: wallet, keys, cell phone? perhaps a one hitter, lighter….ticket stub(s) i guess…....what am i mising here?
spurchief’s matt harping basketball camp comment was the highlight on the thread i thought. much like brent barry is a somewhat of a personal hero to me, matt harpring is to my younger brother (who is 6-6 and played college ball). you can bet that i pasted that into an e-mail and fired it off to him the moment i quit crying/laughing at it.
anybody know where i can watch an archived feed of ast nights titanic struggle vs. utah? i havent been anywhere on-line except here so far this morning. saturday breakfast with PtR in july. what other blog site could boast a 400+ comment thread over a summer league game. now that, spurs bretheren, is a blog.
I actually am quite the site at the music festival. I wear hiking pants (the rei kind), long sleeve underarmor, and a wide brimmed straw hat. The “fanny” pack has drink holders on it. So it is usually packing 2 bottles of water and 2 cans of beer along with my wallet, keys, phone, and sun block.
The wife doesn’t come. So no purse action for me.

The sunblock is for the face, neck, and hands. A few years back I had a basal cell skin cancer removed. I take my sun protection a little more seriously. Especially when I am in the sun for 12 consecutive hours.

oh yeah – and on the ginobili contract extension thing: what are the chances that the spurs get an extension going sooner than later? lock him up now/soon at a discounted rate. like they did with tim. thoughts?
I think the Manu extension negotiations depend on one thing and one thing only, his health upon the conclusion of the Olympics. If he’s 100% coming into training camp, I think they’ll have a deal to announce. If it’s a “Well, after the latest setback we hope to have him by January” kind of situation, then no deal will be in the offing.
