This has nothing to do with Spurs basketball

Hey since these are the dog days of summer, I figured I'd share something with you guys that has nothing to do with Spurs basketball. I figured after Stampler gave us play by play of the Euro cup and Scrappy posting his life story, this is fair game. This past weekend our film team participated in the 48 hour Film Festival. This is a national traveling festival and this past weekend it was in Dallas. Every team is required to write, shoot and edit a 4 to 7 minute film in 48 hours. Our team competed with teams from all over the DFW area. Each team drew a different genre and every team had to incorporate a given prop, dialogue line, character and a profession. This year's prop was a book, the line was "What was I supposed to say?", character was Dale Taylor and the profession was an auto mechanic.  We drew Sci Fi so we had to somehow incorporate these into a script. I was the cinematographer on this short film. My responsibility is to make the writer/director's vision come to fruition. You can see my work by paying attention to the lighting, shot composition, mood and camera movement. We screened this for a live audience on Tuesday night. I'd like to know your thoughts.

What the hell is “shot composition”? And “mood”? What kind of mood? Is this an angry film?

Ok. That was pretty fucking cool.

I really liked the lighting in the shot when they pick up the hitchhiker. After that, I was too engrossed in the story. I’ll watch again later and pay attention to the “mood”.

Yeah, it was giving me the heebie-jeebies until…well, I don’t want to spoil it for anybody but the end got telegraphed there at the end. Until then, it had me.

Yeah, CMoney if you ever get the chance, post more.

NICE....

That was really a lot of fun. I used to help my friend out with short films like that all the time. That brought me back to my high school days, when we would close off roads in my neighborhood with safety cones he and I stole from around town. We’d film from sun up till sundown… Very well played…

it’s a quote from him after the first victory over the T’Wolves… I saw it on league pass… he said it to a female reporter, and her awkward pause afterwards made the quote pure comedy gold. I almost think he did it on purpose, knowing his built in excuse of english as a second language would cover him.

I love this...

Us PtR guys are definitely extending this website past just basketball posts. That’s for sure a good thing… I figure as long as we keep a balance of bball material mixed in, there’s never any reason we shouldn’t be able to share cool shit with each other… Once again, well done…. nice “moodiness”...

BRILLIANT. Nice job, CMoney. Congrats.

1.) Awesome that you guys were able to get the lead singer from Creed to star in the video.
2.) Dale’s wife is kinda hot. Yeah, definately kinda hot.
3.) The music absolutely terrified me. Shat my pants terrified.
4.) I’m never picking up fuckin’ hitchhikers again.
5.) Why wasn’t the child-of-the-corn not more upset when the event happened?

Great lighting and atmosphere. And I loved the mood.

Thanks SiMA. We asked ourselves the same questions about #5. It’s really tough to get extreme emotion out of child actors without them over acting and taking the audience out of it. So we tried to portray more of a “state of shock”. Sometimes less is more.

Very nice...

That was pretty f*n cool, from one Rodriguez to another.

What would you guys do if you picked up a hitchhiker who had a book that said you would kill your dad? I’d like to think I’d react rationally, having seen enough movies, but if I were in that situation it would totally blow my mind.

it would depend on the type of movie...

cuz if it was an action movie, like DIE HARD… I’d jump through some plate glass, shooting a whole clip inot the hitchhiker… but if it was an indie flick, like Clerks, I’d just be introspective and look for catharsis while complaining that I wasn’t even supposed to be there that day….

that was kinda creepy. the hitch-hiker thing is always scary. i would have been impressed with this on the surface – not to mention that you did the whole thing in 48 hours…..

nice work

Just looked at the video after being told about it the other night during the Saturday RMR game by ATS, tomasito, and SiMA. Creepy stuff! I especially liked the music throughout the piece – aptly shifting from intense to haunting. Great story and setting.

Excellent short. The cinematography was very good. Nothing obtrusive, and beautifully shot. They should put that on the Sci-fi channel.

CM, Enjoyed the short: some comments and questions

Good job on the opening shot. I particularly like the look of how he’s out of the direct magic hour sunlight, and yet the weeds to the left of the shot are acting as natural diffusers/reflectors to spread that light across his face and give a really interesting effect while the rest of the frame is dominated by the road running between the trees lit by the scattered light.

The next shot I liked was once the traveler is in the car, from Caleb’s POV, looking up at him with the sun just to the side of his profile and the trees passing in the background, alternatively blocking and revealing the sun. Nice.

Also liked the lighting scheme on Caleb’s face when he was first talking to Dale in the garage, and the low dolly shot of him getting out of the truck after "finding the coin" is terrific.

Final comment: the slow-mo shot of the Traveler walking along the barbed-wire fence is quite well composed – very fun to look at as he enters the frame.

A few questions: What were the rest of the genres? How many teams competed? How did the screening/contest go?

You obviously know film.

Thank you for the comments. I love when people see these things without me having to point them out. Some of the other genres were… horror, silent film, period piece, western, spy, political, musical, road movie, detective, animal film and few others. We were actually hoping for political because we know a guy that looks just like Barack Obama and we have access to the Oval Office set from the movie JKF.

In all 18 teams competed and they split us into 2 groups of 9 teams. Our short won the Audience Award for our group of 9. Tonight is the wrap party/awards night. Hopefully we’ll win best film and I wouldn’t mind taking home best cinematography! I’ll let you know how we do.

Let me know how the awards go. I’m interested to see how you guys did.
