the KU connection
chad ford has his mock draft 3.0 up on espn today, here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2008/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=MockDraft-080602
my boss, a big KU fan, tells me pop has history with the school, and JV played there, and ford happens to have mario chalmers and chris douglas-roberts going back-to-back, with the spurs picking up chalmers first at #26.
my question, would we rather have chalmers, a reasonable back-up point guard who can expect some growing pains, or douglas-roberts, a slashing two-guard that might be able to come off the bench (or start in finley's place) and score in low double-digits right away?
douglas-roberts feels more like an NBA player to me, but then again i thought acie law would be better. my boss says CDR will be a player for a couple years, and kind of poo-poos chalmers. what do ya'll think?

I’d be surprised if Chalmers ever became a viable NBA player on a winning team. The best similar player in the league I can think of is Jason Terry, but I don’t think Chalmers shoots as well as the nut-punching Jet. 6 foot tall shooting guards don’t typically fare well.
You always here that [player x] who was a scorer in college needs to develop into a point guard to succeed in the NBA. I can’t recall a single example of someone who made that transition. I think you are either have the makeup to be a point guard or you don’t, but you can’t become a competent PG.

I think Chad Ford is high.
Hell no would I want Chalmers over Douglas-Roberts. Chalmers could easily be JV part deux and he will most likely be picked in the 2nd round. No reason to waste a 1st round pick on him, especially if Douglas-Roberts is still available. I would take many other players over Chalmers. I really hope Pop doesn’t draft according to some tenuous KU connection. But if he does, he should pick up J.R. Giddens, who played for KU before transferring to UNM.
Chalmers is not likel to develop into a starter, and he is probably years away from being second string on a contender. If the Spurs draft him in the first round I wil not be impressed (favorably at least).

CDR….no doubt. He won’t last that long though.

Completely agree
CMoney and I have been discussing this very same thing. We’re both high on CDR, but I don’t see any hope that he’ll still be around at #26. He’d be a steal if he was, but with all the “he’d be a steal” talk coming out of the media already, I too suspect that he’ll be long gone already.

Plus, the Spurs don’t have any assets to trade to move up to the mid to high teens. I doubt teams in that range would be interested in Javtokas or Splitter, and there’s no way the Spurs would part with Mahinmi. The other strategy would be to take on a contract that a team was looking to dump, like Houston did for us in exchange for Scola, but unfortunately, that’s not an option for our Spurs. I mean, they felt like they couldn’t afford the $2 million they were paying Butler.
I think the Spurs fabricate a foreign player so they don’t have to spend any money. i look for them to draft Fakos Notarealplayerakas from the Greek league.

CDR > Chalmers
I am a KU alum and been watching KU through the past seasons.. haven’t really heard of any pop connection but I can tell you this… I dont know about a better player or how they would fill in the roles but CDR may be more valuable as an NBA player.. Not to take anything away from Chalmers.. but his potential is a big unknown.. KU was a better ‘Team’ with all the different contributors.. but as an individual player CDR is a better bet.
