Michael Redd available?
I found this link via si.com, I believe its from a paper in the Milwaukee area, its mostly about Michael Redd's chances of making the olympic team. Which he should; hes an excellent shooter, particularly mid range. But two parts buried at the end are of interest to Spurs fans.
It’s almost a foregone conclusion that either Michael Redd or Mo Williams will be jettisoned to another zip code this summer.
Redd has piqued the curiosity of a bunch of teams, including the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers. But Redd has two guaranteed years left on his contract for $33 million, plus a player’s option for another $18.3 million.
Williams is guaranteed $35 million over the next four years plus a player’s option for another $8.5 million. Some NBA officials believe the Bucks could obtain a mid-to-late first-round pick for Williams.
Obviously, Redd would be a great addition to the Spurs, giving them the off guard they desperately need, Williams wouldnt be a bad consolation prize either, but Im not sure how he would fit; whether or not hed accept a bench role.
What would it take to get Redd? At this point, perhaps their first rounder, hell give em Splitter, hes never coming over.
Then there was this nugget:
Curious minds want to know why the Spurs, picking at the tail end of the first round, are interested in Syracuse forward Donte Greene, a projected mid-first round pick?
The author doesnt really go into greater detail; maybe Pop and the gang have something up there sleeves. Ive seen Greene in person a few times, he projects to be a sort of Rashard Lewis type, a big slashing 3 type player....so if they could figure out someway to swing that, thatd be sweet.
less than 2 weeks to the draft, Im more curious about the Spurs draft plans than perhaps ever before.

Yeah he is a great offensive talent, but I dont find him a strong defender, and he isn’t young enough.

I don’t see how the Spurs could get Redd with that contract. We just don’t have 16 million in dead weight on the roster to unload.
Also, he might not fit well into the Spurs defensive philosophy. He is a great gunner, but he is not worth his current salary (especially given his age and injury history).
Mo Williams seems intriguing, but the Spurs shouldn’t pay that much for a backup point guard, especially given that he typically misses a quarter of the season due to injuries.

Mo Williams is a better fantasy player than a NBA player
As in his stats look pretty nifty in the box score, but you could never imagine him running a NBA team effectively at the point. He’s a poor shooter for a PG, and is paid a ton of money, which I don’t think the Spurs would want to tie up in a backup PG.

Redd’s not a Popovich-style player. He may, in fact, be the exact opposite of what Pop looks for in his starters. He’s not durable enough, and his game is 95% offense/5% resting for offense. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that he’s rated defensively as the worst starter in the NBA… Obviously, I only watch him a few times a year, but I’ve never seen anything that’s made me disagree with that opinion.

Well i was thinking more of his offense
But I wonder what this Donte Greene talk is all about though.

Green is raw, but he has athleticism and plenty of upside. I would be all for the Spurs drafting him.

The Spurs would most likely have to trade up to get Greene. Maybe a deal could be worked out with the Sixers or the Raptors? The Spurs could give their #26, both of their second round picks, and some cash to get the #16 or #17. I wouldn’t mind that.

I was thinking swapping of the first rounders, plus theyd probably have to throw in their 2010 first rounder (whichever one didnt go to Seattle for thomas, cant remember if it was 09 or 10) to get into the lottery.
which wouldnt be all bad if Tiago came over in 2010-11

Ive seen a lot of mocks that have Green falling out of the lottery too, so maybe this isnt out of the realm of possibility.

Not sure if you have seen enough Redd
If you want a comparison, he is basically Ben Gordon with some height. Great offensive talent, and can explode for 35-40 at times against most of the league. But, woeful at defense, and I mean really bad. He had a no-nonsense kind of coach in Milwaukee and acted like a bitch to him, so I don’t know how well he would adapt to Popovich.

Good comparison
Gordon might be available too..ha Id be salivating at the notion of donte greene though, like someone said above, he is oozing with potential….still a mystery why he didnt go back to Cuse though.

No to Michael Redd
If his contract was more reasonable I may could see it, but he isn’t what the Spurs need.

we’ll never get him. way too expensive, but id take the dude in a skinny minute. i think he is in part exactly what the spurs need. a guy that can score on the wing. my guess is that he would begin to play some defense after getting some pine time. plus he’s from my alma mater, soooooo i gotta chime in on the plus side of this pipe dream.
