I hate to jump on the "we're to old" excuse chain but after watching these playoffs, you've got to be either thinking this. The four titles were good, I loved every one in a different but awesome way. Is there a way for this Spurs team to rebuild in a way that says "we realize we need to get younger, but we still want to win a championship".
Yeah, and I know the term "rebuild" usually means to rip apart the entire team and start over, that's not what I mean. I've already heard named juggled around, like Mike Miller of the Grizz, to name one. Will the Spurs go out and grab youth in this free agency class or will they still chose to rely on their former great role player vets?
How much cap room do we have? I honestly don't know this, I should, but for some reason, I don't. Honestly, out of our three free agents, that being Mike "Where'd My Jumper Go?" Finley (excusing Game 5 to a degree), Robert "Pass the Ball to Me Brent!" (in the final seconds of Game Four, watch, he's going crazy when Brent chucks that up) Horry, and Kurt "I Don't Foul!" Thomas, I'd like to see us keep Kurt. He's the only one out of the three that has been mostly consistent since he was acquired. His mid-range J is come and go, but he hit some pretty substantial shots that pushed the lead when we needed it, and his defense on David West in the NO series was phenominally underrated.
Will we draft an American? I know the answer to this is probably no. However, with the fallout of Scola and now the probable "Scola Part 2" breaching since now Splitter is with Tau, do the Spurs still trust the foreign basketball system? Granted, we got Manu, Tony, Tim, hell everyone pretty much from overseas, but look what Scola is becoming, and if we don't bring in Splitter in the next two seasons, we might be eternally screwed.
Which leads me to the point of this rambling post. Do we have the balls to finally rebuild? The Spurs undoubtedly have a lot of pride, and should, but what has killed this team all season has been youth and athleticism. Shrug at it all you want, I know it sounds like a typical ESPN bullcrap excuse, but its true.
What do you guys think?
