08/09 Spurs Roster
Yeah, the wound is still fresh, but I think the best way to heal it is to start looking forward to 09. Odd years FTW!!
Definetly on the team next year (last year of contract in parenthesis):
GUARDS/SWINGMEN: Tony (10/11), Manu (09/10), Bruce (09/10), Junior Varsity (08/09), Bones (08/09), Fatality (08/09)
Hopefully we'll see some of these expiring contracts not named Brent Barry used to swing a trade.
FORWARDS/CENTERS: Timmah (11/12), Bonner (09/10), Ian (08/09 with team options until 10/11), Fab (09/10)
So we need some fucking big men guys. Ian and Matty are going to have to come up big for us. I honestly think that Crazy Eyes is going to be back.

2 Year Rebuild, Need to Try to Do It in One
Can’t sleep after this loss, so here’s my quick take:
- Number 1 need, a scoring #2/#3 spot, need to replace Fin with a playa, take some heat off Manu.
- Number 2 need, some bigs at #4/#5 spot, Kurt Thomas is solid, Fab just can’t play at this level, wished we had kept Nesterovic, Timmy needs some serious help in the paint.
- Number 3 need, a back-up PG who can score, maybe Jacques can improve his offense and develop into this role, maybe Stoudemire would like to make this work and we just didn’t give him a chance to show it, or maybe we need to get rid of both of them, wished we had kept Udrih here.
- KEEP TP, Timmy, Bruce and Bones. Maybe keep Kurt too. Horry & Fin are gone for sure. Everyone else, including Manu, should be on the block. We have lots of money coming free this year and next, and supposedly 2010 is a big free agent class, so this might be a 2-year rebuild. At which point, Timmy, Bruce and Bones may be too old to go the distance, so here’s to hoping we can make some good moves this offseason. Go Spurs!

Manu on the block? Why the fuck? He singlehandedly won us 4 games off the top of my head and was All-NBA. Its not his fault he was badly injured in this series. GTFO

I’ve been a Spurs fan since the days of Iceman, Gene Banks, Artis Gilmore, and Mike Mitchell, but if they pull a Malik Rose on Ginobili and trade him to some crappy team like the Knicks… as SiMA might say, they would be dead to me. Ginobili needs to retire a Spur.

No Way
Like Tomasito said, Gino should retire a Spur. Trading him, the emotional heart of team, would anger MANY Spurs fans. He and Timmy have earned the right to gradually fade stat wise year after year and eventually pass the torch (still a few years from now) to our future free agent signings or international finds.

Understandable reaction. I love Gino too, but if his body is at the start of a decline, then perhaps we trade him now while he has some meaningful market value coming off his All-NBA season. Blasphemy for many, but we need to do all we can to ride Timmy to another trophy or two before he slows down. Manu is our only guy with good trade value right now, other than untouchables Timmy and TP. Perhaps a cold, calculating unpopular move that if done right, could get another championship. I love these guys but don’t buy the argument that they have earned the right to grow old gracefully in the same position with declining performance. I would rather win.

Yeah lets trade our MVP from last season, the player without whom we damn sure wouldn’t have had the #3 seed. Fuck, we might have been bumped from playoff contention or some such shit.
I KNOW that Manu won us 5 games on his back, by himself. (37 pt Dallas and Utah games without Timmah, 46 pt Cleveland game, 44 pt Minny game, probably the 34/15 Raptors game). Dudes that puts us right at the bottom of the West if we lose those games.

The day we trade Gino (or Timmy, or TP) will be the day I turn my back on this team. They have to retire as Spurs. If they don’t, then there’s simply no loyalty left in the organization, or the fanbase. These guys have been everything for us for the last 5 years.
I really can’t get that American version of sports loyalty, when teams can leave cities and icons can bet traded when they get older, instead of trying to build around them. Just a sad, sad way of dealing with people that have given us so much happiness, so many memories.
Not to mention that this was arguably Manu’s best season as a Spur.

Fin, RoHo will be gone for sure… really, they were the only guys that seemed like they actually made us more likely to lose any game in which they played. They seemed ultra intent on proving everyone who thought they were past their prime wrong. I’m actually surprised that neither of them retired last year, and went out on top.
I have to say that I actually like JV, because he never tries to do anything he shouldn’t be doing, unlike the two above (and Mighty Mouse…who was a flat bust). He’ll likely be back, if only for that one thing, which I’m sure is a Pop favorite.
As far as the big man situation goes, I’m not really sure we’ll look. Obviously the Splitter situation appears to be in limbo, but I think that the way it turns out may be a blessing in disguise. Ian Mahinmi should add some much needed energy off the bench (something we lacked down the stretch). I’m sure that Buford and Pop will find something they like, and they probably know more than we.
All in all, I feel like we’ll be right back in it next year. The core guys will still be there, and there will be some new faces here to keep the wheels spinning. We’ll be fine… Great season, fellas.

The draft is going to depend on how the chips fall, but I’m pretty damn sure we are going to take the best avaliable PG or SF/SG when we pick in the first round.
by JamesR on May 30, 2008 1:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know about the draft, I think it’s impossible now to know which players are going to be available that late in the first round, but I would actually be OK to see them pick a prospect only to let him develop overseas.
That’s because the Spurs should have more than 12 milions coming off the books next season, and even if, say, Vaughn and Thomas remained, they should have plenty of room to put a couple of very good free agents under contract.
There’s no way to tell what Buford and Pop will decide to do, but they have enough flexibility to build a champinship caliber team around the big three.

Apparently for Game 4, Matt Bonner invited his good friend Mike Miller from the Grizzlies to SA and he sat behind the bench. Now, we know from the Lakers deal that the Grizz will literally take anyone in a trade.
So, what do you guys think about having Mike in SA?

It would be great. The shame is, I read that the Spurs could have pulled that deal off during the season, but the Grizzlies were gun-shy about trading good players for nothing after being pilloried for the Pau deal.

Mike Miller would be a great addition. Great shooter and competitor. He would be a great compliment to Manu and an excellent replacement for Finley. BUT what pieces do we have to trade? Nothing that I can think of outside of the Big 3.

It would be great, in my opinion: he could be a great replacement for Finley, younger and a much better shooter (50% FG this year).
But he’s not a free agent, it seems, so the Spurs would have to trade for him, and he made 8+ millions this season.

We have got to draft a young big man, specifically one that can play right away.

Well we are getting Ian, buy most accounts he’s going to be a full-time Spur next year.
I think the draft needs to be more focused on a swingman.

Point guard – I’d like to bring back Darius Washington and Brent Barry and let JV be some sort of player/coach who, gets this, we don’t actually ever play. If we could trade JV I would but who would take him? I’m not sure if Mike Brown is drunk enough on A to Z wine to go for that deal. As for Barry, the bright spot was that Pop finally admitted that Barry can play the backup point guard. Of course it took two years to see this fact, and in the meantime wasted some of Barry’s potential. Barry needs to be involved to be…involved, if that makes any sense. Playing the cockroach role doesn’t suit his mental state. He’s too wired to hide in the corner.
SF – Mike Miller would be great. He has the metrosexuality of a Euro and the grit of a Florida swamp. Also, with he and Bonner and Barry we would have three of the top indie rock ballers in the league. (Granted, it’s a short list, with Nash way ahead of everyone and Vlad Rad keeping his cards close to his chest.)
Big men – we have to play Ian. Based on a Ludden article, I didn’t get the sense that was a foregone conclusion until Tiago stabbed us in the back with a shard of high-end Spanish tile.
Overall, we should admit that Pop won’t make as many changes as we’d like. I’d like to see Horry, Finley, Damon, and JV gone. 2 out of 4 isn’t bad, I guess.

OK here’s my projection (OK wish, but within the realm of possibilities) for how it turns out:
(Assuming we have ~12 million in cap space)
Sign Josh Childress to a 4-5 year deal worth 8 million per year. He is the long, athletic 3 that we have been coveting for so many years. He shot 57% off the bench last season, can rebound, defend and drain the three. Also he is a solid citizen who is highly coachable. He is a perfect fit for the Spurs.
Sign Carlos Arroyo to a 3-4 year deal worth 4 million per year. This guy is a good scorer, good free-throw shooter, and a decent ball distributer. His defense is just average, but he is not terrible like Steve Nash, and the Spurs system will benefit his defensive game. He is another international player and Spanish speaker who would probably be right at home on the Spurs. You wouldn’t have to suck in your breath every time he shoots or drives as you do with JV.
Re-sign KT to a minimum contract for 2 years. Now maybe he will try and get our (or someone else’s) MLE, but I am thinking that since he is up there in years he might not be worth that much on the market. If not the minimum, then maybe use half the MLE on a 2 year contract, just enough time until Splitter joins the team.
Draft
1st round pick (#26). I would like to get Chris Douglas-Roberts (6’7” SF of Memphis). Though he is unorthodox he certainly can score and he is a decent defender. Plus one scout says he looks like he is 60 years old with his awkward hunched-over playing style. This is a guy who is young, but looks ancient on the floor. A perfect Spur. I don’t think he will fall that far so the Spurs will likely take (6’5” SG) J.R. Giddens, or (6’5” SG) Courtney Lee. I would take Giddens out of those two due to his off the charts athleticism, long arms and tenacious defense (but I wouldn’t mind Lee).
2nd round picks (#15 and #27) If it looks like we can get Giddens here or with someone else’s earlier 2nd round pick by trade, then maybe we trade down and get a future pick (or probably cash, blehhh). If not then I think these picks have foreigner written all over them. If the Spurs sign their free agents properly, then they won’t have space for a couple of extra second rounders. Draftexpress thinks we’ll get Plaisted and then Hairston. Plaisted isn’t going to be getting any time on the Spurs roster any time soon, so that would be a waste. Do we really need a less polished version of Micheal Doleac? I think not. Hairston, a 6’6” SF might be OK to take at that point, but he might not even survive the summer league. Apparently he has been impressing in the pre-draft camps so he could be worth a flyer this late in the draft.
So I would see our roster shaping up as:
1: Tony, Arroyo, JV
2: Manu, Barry, Giddens
3: Bowen, Childress, Udoka
4: Duncan, Ian, Bonner
5: KT, Oberto
Even without Splitter that will be an upgrade over this season. First of all, we will no longer be saddled with the all around horrid play of Robert Horry. Also, Finley’s minutes would be replaced by minutes from Barry, Childress, and Udoka, and that is clearly a step up. Giddens will also be available in case he shows that he is ready to play the NBA game (and he is a 5th year senior so he has plenty of experience).
We will have another wing defender to go along with Bowen and Udoka, but Childress is a greater offensive threat than both of them, and he is the kind of versatile long defender we can use to guard 3 or 4 positions.
Hopefully Ian will grow up fast, but if it is rough for him, we can lean on Bonner, who as we all know could not possibly play worse than Horry did this season. At the very least we will have an upgrade in athleticism at this position, and that will be exciting to watch.
We will be greatly increasing our productivity from the backup point guard spot, and that will be huge. It will help us rest Tony more during the regular season and will prevent teams from going on huge runs when JV is running the show.
The center spot would be virtually the same (just another year of age on them), but that should be OK. We haven’t asked a center to do much for quite some time now.

Nice take, VWolf. Getting J-Chil would be a great move! Hope we can pull it off, or at least make a serious run at it. The draft will obviously affect that move, but I also am very high on Douglas-Roberts. Maybe we can package our #1 and late #2 to move up in #1 to get him. If not, a guy I like is Bill Walker from KSU. Real athletic, aggressive swingman at 6’6’’ projected to go early 2nd round. Today, Draft.net is showing that we take Chalmers at PG in the first round, which I hope to God is not close to accurate as he looks like JV2.

I know I commented below about CDR, but man he is just what the Spurs could use. Someone like Childress would be a great pickup as well. Damn, I wish this team would have kept James White…..

I think that Udoka will be a X factor of where he comes from the bench. He can also replace Manu when Barry isn’t 100%, and can stand it for KT/Oberto on some nights we are facing the East teams—teams with no true center/post presence. He has earned that much with his stellar play this postseason….I think he was the reason we won those games other than Manu being Manu. Udoka played outta his friggin’ mind. No point of him being a 3rd stringer….

You are right. I am sure he will get some minutes, especially when we do the small-ball thing. The less minutes Duncan, Manu, and Tony have to play in the regular season, the better, so it is good to have talent going all the way back to the third string.
by VWolf on May 30, 2008 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another year of understudy from Bowen will do wonders for Udoka too. He can give Bruce a LOT of rest during the regular season, and against weak offensive teams, or with teams that have a “Peja” - a person that is basically a transitional spot-up shooter -. It is just a shame that we got him when we did (not that I complain) and not sooner….I was watching an NBA Access show, and it showed Udoka was a Laker first, they ditched him, he played elsewhere, came back, played for Portland…and the games they showed for Portland…wow…I woulda grabbed him then.

Yeah, since I live in Portland I have seen Udoka play quite a bit. I really liked him when he was on the Blazers. The guy came out of nowhere (though he is originally from Portland and attended college here as well) and started most of the season and played quite well next to Roy. As we all know by now, he doesn’t do anything flashy, but he does almost everything pretty well. He is a nice “jack of all trades” to have on the Spurs.
