Round 3, Game 4: vs Los Angeles

We need Game 4, and we need it bad.

Star-divide

I don't know what to expect.  Do I subscribe to the cup is half full theory -- we've owned 20 point leads in two of the three gamess -- or the cup is half empty -- we are down 2-1 in the series.  After Game 4, it doesn't matter.  We'll either be right in the thick of it with a tied series or we will be on the brink of a summer vacation.

This game is HUGE.  HUGE I tell you.

I think the Spurs gotta take care of “little runs”. Basically since this all playoffs begun (including those distant “suns series” about 6 weeks ago) the Spurs kept things in control except for a few streches in-between the games.

The Suprs game is to keep things under control (pace, tempo, attack plays) and since 2004 that´s the way it used to be. Problem is that year after year, that “control” is getting harder to achieve but I believe they are still doing it.

Spurs have to avoid those offensive droughts.

by BUTD on May 26, 2008 7:29 PM CDT   0 recs

I haven’t been watching the series, only following it on Game Cast. Harvey’s column today said Jackson will likely switch Bryant onto Ginobili. I thought Bryant already guards Ginobili. If not, whom has Bryant been guarding?

Pop has to keep playing Brent. It’s obvious he will, but I won’t understand why a guy who barely played the first two rounds wasn’t even considered for Game 1 when even remote tribes in the Amazon knew the Spurs would be jet-lagged.

by Jason Roberts on May 26, 2008 11:49 PM CDT   0 recs

Vujacic has been guarding Ginobili and Bryant has mostly been guarding Bowen. If Jackson does make that switch, then Manu has to do everything he can to wear Bryant out on the defensive end.

I laughed out loud when I read “Pop has to keep playing Brent, it’s obvious he will.” I’m right with you and hope that it happens, I’m just not so convinced that even Pop is so clearly swayed. I could name about 17 players seeing court time for us now that shouldn’t be, if Pop payed attention to what’s ‘obvious.’

I saw that too, and Bryant on Gino would be welcomed. Manu will wear Kobe down as he’s quite the scorer, compared with Bruce.

That's right

The reason Bryant has been guarding Bowen is because all he has to do really is camp the 3 point line and kinda roam, looking for steals a la Pippen in the Bulls hey day. It conserves his energy for the offensive end, so he can take over when the others on the Lakers are going through thier scoring drought.

Bryant is an excellent defender, but aye, I agree-he’d have to work really hard on the defensive end should Ginobili be where he was last game, or better. Also Ginobili - at home—is a “star” enough that Bryant could be called for fouls, putting him on Bowen or the bench before Jackson wants to. So this is really a catch-22 for the Lakers….contain Ginobili at the risk of Bryant exhausting himself at that end, or pick up some fouls, cheap or not? Or let Bryant continue to guard Bowen and hope that Gasol and Odom get untracked?

Mojo.

So I missed the first half of game three due to being at a campground. My question is, do I have to miss the first half of tomorrow’s game? I am willing and prepared to do it. I expect SiMA, our resident Mojo expert, to give me a response.

by Hipuks on May 27, 2008 1:05 AM CDT   0 recs

Let me put it this way-
I’m wearing the same jersey, undershirt, and pair of jeans as Game 3. I’m lighting the same candle, in the same spot on the TV. I’m ordering from the same pizza place. The girlfriend is coming over again, and wearing the same shirt. The same banner is hung in the same way from my dresser. I’m drinking the same brand of creme soda, at the same time as I did in Game 3

And yes, still certifiable. But not taking any chances. I’m not even sure that I wouldn’t go camping at the same campground NOW, only to return midgame tonight. It’s that critical. We need Game 4. I’ve missed entire playoff games for the good of the team before. Matthew publicly mocks the mojo, but in secret he sends me praising thankful emails. You don’t want to be the guy whose pattern change led to Game 2’s embarassment, for example; that guy’s likely already killed himself, and we NEED Hipuks.

Now that’s a man that knows the ways of the mojo. Here it’s same shirt, same pajama pants, same bed even though I’m feeling better, same computer (my mother’s notebook) and I even plan to use the same Internet feed, if it works tonight.

Let’s win this thing.

by pslakerfan on May 27, 2008 12:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nah, not all 4.

Maybe… 2 of those are mojo-based. Yeah.

by LatinD on May 27, 2008 5:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually, 5 of those are mojo-based.

In 2006 I accidentally wore the 20 year old SPURS T-shirt after only washing it twice, and not three times. We’d have taken Dallas and followed with Miami had the shirt been prepared correctly.

by beachwood on May 27, 2008 3:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The key to maintaining the mojo is not to do anything too outlandish that you would have difficulty replicating. Don’t travel to Europe, don’t go on a first date. SiMA has it down: his routine is very specific, but also doesn’t require a lot of effort to do again.

I think that the Spurs should foul more

That’s what I would like to see – more hacking – but not of Lamar Odom. Foul Kobe more, foul Gasol more. Bowen is fouling enough, though, they just need to call it – you know if a dude was playing D like that at the playground, you would just punch him. Sasha Vujacic does it too, and I don’t like it either, but at least they call him on it – most of the time.

by Amazing_Happens on May 27, 2008 1:21 AM CDT   0 recs

Two things

1) You often hear the “if someone did this on the playground / playing rec ball etc.” argument. Well, guess what: no one plays defense in pickup games, other than showy “let me pick this guy’s pocket” defense. You know what else? People would laugh at you if you ran plays on the playground, but I don’t hear anyone suggesting NBA teams should stop doing that.

2) Vujacic has gotten away with a lot on Ginobili, both in LA and in game 3 in SA. He was pretty handsy on the play where he was switched onto Timmy D and Timmy hit the hook shot from the baseline at the shotclock buzzer. How many fouls did The Machine pick up in that game? 2. So it’s not fair to say that the referees are “calling him on it.”

"Edward Scissorhand" is a misnomer

Bruce Bowen fouls with everything BUT his hands – his feet, his legs, his torso, his shoulders…

And no one would punch you for running plays on the playground.

And like I said, I don’t like Vujacic’s foul-a-minute defense either, just like I don’t like Bowen’s.

by Amazing_Happens on May 27, 2008 1:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

by 4Him on May 27, 2008 2:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I didn't say he wasn't a good defender

I just said that he fouls with everything but his hands.

by Amazing_Happens on May 27, 2008 3:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

So you’re saying that he doesn’t get called for those fouls?

by 4Him on May 27, 2008 3:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sometimes he plays good defense

Other times he fouls with the other parts of his body, and even he doesn’t think it’s a foul, for instance, you can’t just walk into the path of the driving player, but Bowen does it frequently. They actually called it when he walked under Kobe shooting that three.

Also he steps under guys’ feet after they shoot. C’mon you guys already know that don’t you?

by Amazing_Happens on May 27, 2008 3:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually

Replays show Bowen went under the screen, and Kobe really QUICKLY turned, and jumped kinda sideways (initiating contact) to get the foul. I think not going to the line bugged the snot outta him. Also I don’t know what the clock was at, but that was the 3rd outta 4 times that Kobe went down and shot some really poor % shot that happened to go in…

Only Kobe can do that nowadays lol….

Sorry, but he’s already been Mr. Hornet (including poking Pop in the chest with his finger and issuing him a technical, when Crawford was in the wrong on an argument). He absolutely hates Duncan and the Spurs and his job is not in jeopardy.

The Lakers will be able to get away with more murder than usual on Duncan (he is going to have to score through the hacks because he won’t be making many trips to the line). Also, Kobe will enjoy spending time at the line (even without driving) as Crawford calls light touch fouls on Bowen and Udoka.

by VWolf on May 27, 2008 4:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Great

So…if the Spurs manage to pull it off tonight (here’s hoping, but get yer conspiracy hats on fellas) then at least Crawford ref’ed a Home game, and he is unavailable for the rest of the series—they go in rotations. Also, J. Crawford likes to call a lot of “field fouls” a.k.a touch fouls….so look for all the perimiter players to go to the line a lot more tonight then in Game 3.

Go Spurs Go :)

PS- I bleed Black and Silver, always have and always will. But I’ve pretty much decided that with this announcement, when Timmeh and Manu hang it up I’m also done with the NBA. There’s no cause for this other than the conspiracies. Crawfish has proven that he’s a stoolie that cares more about manipulating games that objectively moderating them; and yet he continues to get big games. I’m tired of feeling like it’s more a product of entertainment, puppeted by higher powers, than it is a viable sport.

And not let him get in thier head. Having the home crowd SHOULD negate him, and also being at home does wonders for the role players/bench, so let’s hope that over-rides the bad mojo we are all already feeling for the game….

Believe it or not, best possible scenario

I actually think this could be BPS – we knew we were going to get Crawford again, much better to get him at home, plus I’m guessing there’s a good chance he’ll be on his best behavior after that nonsense he pulled in New Orleans – to me that finger in Pop’s chest should have been enough to get him kicked out for once and for all. Come on Stern – does the NBA really need Joey Crawford? I think not. The Spurs knew they lost their heads the last time they saw him and that should be enough for them to have their stone cold game faces on tonight.

Then, after we win tonight, as Nixiack says, no more Crawford for the rest of this series. I was really worried about him in LA for Game 7 (hopefully a game which doesn’t need playing after we win the next 3!).

Pop always gets better as a series continues, Manu and everyone else got the most rest they will get in this series, and there is plenty of film evidence as to what good, motion offense can do against the Lakers (as opposed to predictable Tony pick and roll play). Barry plays for JV and gets more minutes, Oberto gets more minutes without Tony (who doesn’t use him ever), Timmeh continues to kill everybody, Spurs roll tonight!

I gotta agree with you

I’d rather our boys have to deal with Mr. Crawford in our own building rather than away. (We all know how well that turned out in New Orleans.)

Having said that, I don’t really think we have an answer for the ego that is Joey Crawford. He may decide to go down in flames at this game…. but if he does, he’ll definitely want to take us with him.

by bellasa on May 27, 2008 12:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more. One day, Mt. Joey will erupt and get completely bounced. But when that happens, he’s definately not going alone, and we’re going to be the most likely target.

I’m glad we have him in SA too, but the real frustration for me is that he’s even there. I’ve said it before, but how inept is the league that he would even be officiating in this series? They have plenty of options, and they continue to schedule him for big games. I mean if anything, DON’T schedule him to avoid the controversy or conspiracy theories! Either way, it can never end good (other than an LA win) for the league. LA loses, and it’s because Joey tilted towards SA out of fear for his job. Spurs lose, and it’s because he was even in the building. The NBA and stern constantly amaze me with their arrogence and incompetance.

After watching Pistons/Celtics...

there’s no way we would lose to either of these teams right now. Therefore, WE MUST WIN TONIGHT! After that, I’m seeing this as two wins aways from a title – NOT IMPRESSED with the scoring ability of either of those two Eastern teams, although they both play great D. Our 3’s against their 2’s will not be a contest. Is it bad karma to be talking about the Finals? Hopefully not, just sayin, we are 3 wins away from a title defense opportunity which WE WILL WIN.

You forgot to mention though, that we ought to move cities too. We should pack up and exit stage left San Antonio. We ought to change our uniforms to another color and relocate to Manhatten. Then upon arriving, we should force each player to pop jerseys and scream after hitting shots. The playing field would be equal then as well.

Same song, second verse

The first half of this series is playing out just like the last one, with the home team holding serve, and with the Spurs slowly turning the tide. I think that the Spurs will play well enough to overcome the Crawford effect, and a convincing win would go a long way toward a series-turning victory in game 5.

I keep hearing these national media guys assert that the Lakers will win this series b/c they are clearly the better team, with no further explanation. I just don’t see it, especially b/c our Big Three is better than their Big Three. And as the series gets longer, the experience factor becomes bigger…

Look, Bowen slows down Kobe better than any defender out there

But let’s not call it “lock down defense”, eh? Kobe still scored 30 points that game.

And, yes Bowen steps under the shooter with his lead foot, so I wouldn’t be surprised of Kobe lands on it and twists his ankle.
