How the hell did the Hornets stop this?
Someone tell me.

Timmy got the flu. Also, tyson chandler isn’t a giant wimp ala some other 7foot players on the lakers…
Finally. They stopped.
Duncan makes his teammates better.
I agree.
I think that Kobe makes his teammates better, too.
Good luck Game 2.

Plaschke on Around the Horn said it actually...
He said that Ginobili usually needs either 2 days of rest, or 1 day and 1 half of basketball. But even though he’s a Laker homer and writer, he has Spurs in 6, and stated that Ginobili is even BETTER THAN KOBE at the end of games for his respective team.
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke21-2008may21,0,5741780.column
How’s that for a complement.
Also, Tex Winter on Ginobili
The ultimate decision for Jackson is how the Lakers match up with guard Manu Ginobli. “I’m not sure how we’re gonna go with that one,” Winter said. “Phil may not know the answer to that one right up until game time Wednesday. That’s another one of the keys. What are we gonna do to contain that guy?”
Man, if Manu can get untracked, how much will the Spurs win by? The Lakers honestly look lost. THAT BEING SAID….
Here comes the 3rd quarter. I know, I know….but if we manage to win that quarter and are up by 10 + going into the 4th, I really really like the Spurs’ chances of taking Game 1.
Charles Barkley
I no longer like him. I think SA cost him some money or something.

It’s such a difference man, it’s like suddenly we’re getting looks we never got against NOOCH. I expected us to suck tonight, but I’m starting to feel hopeful.
My wife agrees with you. One night we played the “if you would leave me for one person who would it be” game. She went with Duncan.

With you on this. Me-lady is also infatuated with TD. At first I thought it was adorable, and it made her a stronger ‘ring candidate.’ But lately she’s been looking at magazine covers a little TOO long with that far away look in her eye, and I’m starting to get uncomfortable. Timmeh has powers, no doubt about that.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 22, 2008 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions
So… how was the first half? I got to see Timmy dominate, and Bones and Barry looking good. And Manu missing two good looks.
What did I miss?
We were really solid and Manu was pretty crappy.

Somehow he’ll end up with his 17pts, 5 rebs, and 4 assists.

He really tried and tried to get his team involved….he has 5 assists, but even the announcers are like “ok, where’s Kobe?”
If Bowen is bothering him that much, that CAN NOT be good for the Laker faithful.

At this level, Pop can’t let Manu play through his funk. Too much on the line. Needs to set him and let him compose himself. The mistakes build on themselves and are magnfied deep into the playoffs.
Tony needs to recognize when the situation is getting Lucy goosey and lead the offense himself. Manu isolated at the top of the key is pure death.

I’m not being sarcastic. I feel more relieved than anything.
The first half was like watching someone take a lego set of Lakers blocks and just take it apart.
I’m not even sure what happened the second half. I think the Lakers abandoned the triangle and said fuck it Kobe, run the pick and roll with Gasol all day.
by Amazing_Happens on May 21, 2008 11:02 PM CDT reply actions
1. I think Pop kept Bowen on the bench way to long in the 3rd quarter.
2. Why did Tony pass up that layup on the last play to kick out to a bad Manu shot?
We lost because...
The guards started playing like in NO during 3rd quarters. With the Lakers in the penalty, BOTH Ginobili and Parker drove in and then kicked it back out for a 3 that was OBVIOUSLY not going down. If Ginobili and Parker would have continued to drive the lane with Duncan doing what he did, they would have won by probably 8. Still, Pop is a master strategist, will see this I think, and hopefully adjust for Game 2.
If I was Jackson, I’d honestly wonder what he will adjust. Will he crash Duncan like NO did and hope that the rest of the Spurs beat him, or what? Gasol can NOT guard him, obviously…..
We look like shit on offense at times, because turnovers and mistakes give the other team confidence. They play with more energy and emotion. Our mistakes compound themselves and we become tenative. We have no floor general when Tony drifts away from the basket and penetrating.
Right on Tony making a bad decision. You drive against the Lakers, you will get bumped. Need to penetrate and kick it out quick before the contact.
Great game by Bowen though. Things fell apart defending Kobe when he went out.
by Clintons Cigar on May 21, 2008 11:06 PM CDT reply actions
I'm not going to lie.
This lost hurts. I will be very interested to see how we bounce back. We got tired and went flat. But watch what happened the first 3 1/2 quarters when we had energy. We we’re owning them.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
Biggest thing I can take away from this is simple….towards the end of the game, the Lakers looked fresh, the Spurs (except Parker and Duncan) looked exhausted. If they are rested up and feeling great in Game 2, then I have to like our chances there. The Lakers-other than Kobe and Fisher-definitely looked lost and timid and had the look of “um, we’re the Lakers? What gives??” So if the Spurs get out to another big lead in Game 2, then I think they will actually pull it off.
I tell you something else, we need a real backup point gaurd.
by Clintons Cigar on May 21, 2008 11:08 PM CDT reply actions
Vaughn is an alright matchup with Fisher but he’s a complete liability on the offensive end. The offense comes to a complete stand still and then we have to have other liabilities (Finley, Barry, etc) to counter act and make some shots.
Allez Spurs!
Not only is he a liability, but he fires up the opposing defense. There intensity level picks up when he comes into the game.
by Clintons Cigar on May 21, 2008 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I think right now I have passive aggressive angriness, like everything seem cool on the surface, but the slightest thing could just make go completely ape shit and break something.
True on Bowen
He was giving Kobe fits. It was not great to take him out when he got his 3rd foul, that’s when Kobe went off, and it was too late(he was already in a groove) when Bowen came back in…that being said :
Kobe’s push off on Bowen SUCKED. 2 Refs, no call, Kobe with an easy basket.
Odom fouled Parker on the drive in (2nd to last possession) - no call
Odom collapsing on Ginobili-yes a Spur might have knocked him into Ginobili, but he was also grabbing Ginobili’s jersey, unless Ginobili managed to find a jersey that spelled SPURS from his shoulder to his butt. That should have been called.
It seemed in the 20 pt. meltdown, that the Spurs settled for too many outside shots(not enough Parker going in, esp when they GASP started to double team Duncan)....they got too fancy, and the refs let the Lakers do whatever they wanted :( That, and the Spurs started looking tired really fast :(
I also think an overlooked part of the game was when we lost that 20 point lead. That seemed to affect the outcome.
You did NOT just give Reggie props
What is the Koo-Aid you are drinking? That man can’t put 3 complete sentences together that make any sense.
I will give you that Kenny Smith is right on, what did he say?
No!! NO. I don’t notice him during the game…come to think of it I watch the game on mute and get the commentating from you guys.

by Justin Biehle on May 21, 2008 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Lately, yes….I turned it off when the score went final.
Ah well, even the Laker fans here are exhaling. Typical “OMG I told u suk Kobe balls!” on ESPN / CNNSI “conversation” -if it passes for that- but at least Amazing, etc. are like “holy crap…whew…” They knew they came thisclose to blowing Game 1 and giving home court to the tired Spurs….
So, to come from this :
1) If we can get a 20 pt. lead on the rested Lakers on THIER floor when they knew they were the overwhelming favorites, and then run out of gas-the Spurs looked dead tired-then that has to be a positive for us.
2) The Lakers unf. know they can come back from a 20 pt. deficit now, abeit it was absolutely predictable…Kobe gets the ball, Kobe shoots, Kobe gets the ball, Kobe shoots, Kobe gets the ball, Kobe shoots, Radmonovic gets the ball, makes a shot, but now without Kobe glaring at him going “how DARE you shoot that damn shot.”...Kobe gets the ball, Kobe shoots….Pop should have sat Bowen for about 2 minutes, not the whole 1/2 of the 3rd just because he has 3 fouls. Yes he finished with 5, but still, that tide could have been stemmed.
3) Tim needs to practice Free Throws. He missed 4 of them, that would have been the game.
4) Manu can’t be off all that much. He will take it personal and come back next game.
5) No Laker fan can say jack about the Parker/Fisher matchup. Parker abused him like he was yesterday’s trash. Fisher finished 1/9 for 4 points. Odom finished 3/12 for 8 points. We keep playing Defense like that…and with Parker constantly driving, Tim doing what he just does(and he’s so good at it too), when Ginobili lights up then the Spurs WILL win by 10 +. If he was anywhere near on tonight, they would have won by 10.
Huh?????
Nixiack I like you so I will try to be nice. Most of your analysis is just plain goofy. (Goofy is my nice word for crazy, insane, ridiculous, and sometimes stupid). “Overwhelming favorites”??? What planet are you from?
“Kobe gets ball, Kobe shoots, Kobe gets ball, Kobe shoots”............How about Kobe gets 9 assists?
You think Fisher shooting 1/9 and Odom 3/12 in a Spurs loss is good for you????? That wasn’t defense, that was missing wide open shots. I am not saying you guys don’t play great defense because you do, but Odom missed like 5 layups and almost all of Fisher’s misses were WIDE OPEN.
Also Kobe 1/3 in the first half, that isn’t going to happen too often.
Thanks for being nice to me :p The reasonI say it (with being a Spurs homer yes) is this :
1) You have to admit, the Spurs are the worst nightmare to the NBA right now. Sure, most pundits are picking the Spurs “because they are tired of picking against them” but the majority (read : about 95% of the US) want the Lakers to win. So in that text, they are the favorites. Even you say “Lakers in 5”.
2) Kobe tried like mad to get his teammates involved. Yes he had 9 assists. He had 6 assists at halftime, and they were down by 8-10. He kept trying and kept trying, and his teammates just were not into it, and they were down 20. I know you didn’t watch the TNT cast, but you said you would, so listen for the announcers. They were all going ape-snot regarding Kobe, going “Where is Kobe? Where is Kobe? When is he going to go off on these Spurs? When is he going to look for his shot?!” And sure enough, for a long stretch there….abeit the stretch that got them back into it (from 20 to down 10) it was Kobe gets the ball, Kobe shoots, Kobe scores….Fisher brings the ball up, gives it to Kobe, he scores. Vlad brings the ball up, gives it to Kobe, he scores….. and when Radmonovic shot(and made) that 3, the announcers both said “did you see that look on Kobe’s face? Yeah, that one of “why the heck did you JUST take that shot?!” Kobe was posting up when Radmonovic shot it up, and Kobe was like “WHY THE HELL DID YOU JUST DO THAT?!” until the shot went down. He started transforiming into “I will do it myself” Kobe, and that wasn’t good.
3) Fisher’s 1-9 is great for us. How many times other than the 2 drives(that I will admit and have admitted were very odd that he didn’t get the call) did you actually even NOTICE Fisher taking a shot? None. That is essentially taking him out of the game….while he could not do a thing to Parker on the other end….on that note : Odom played exactly as he had played in playoffs past….he went 3/12, and 4 of those shots were point blank that either Duncan said “no way” or he just flat out missed VERY BADLY. (TV will show you)....
No Kobe 1/3 in the first half won’t happen. I can pretty much guarantee you will see Kobe jacking up about 10-12 shots, driving the lane, etc. and NOT getting his teammates involved to the extent that he had been doing in the 1st half of this game because there is something about Kobe that is very true, at least to the non Laker observer. —- Check out the stats in the games where people say “Kobe didn’t take over, Kobe tried and his teammates blew it.” He almost ALWAYS (about 95%) takes about 25-30 shots the next game.
If the Lakers had not won, then that’s the exact Kobe you’d see in Game 2. The ” Oh I have teammates?!” Kobe. It must still not sit well with him that in all his trying, in all his getting his teammates involved, they fell behind to a tired Spur team by 20. Yes, yes, they won. They beat the Spurs and came back from 20 to do it. By all means, KUDOS. And I’m serious about that ! :) But on the flipside of things, you have to admit : Kobe finally showed up, Ginobili never did. Ginobili looked like a train wreck (just check your fellow Laker fans’ post below….even he thought there was something wrong with Ginobili….) Had Ginobili avged. his usual—and he did get the usual amount of shots except maybe 2-3…..which went to the Corpse of Finley(don’t get me started)....then this would have been a Spur win.
Seriously is there Something wrong with Manu?
He looked hungover.
But that between the defender’s legs pass was nice.

Manu was just exhausted
I did notice and say that several times during the game….
Pop should have sat him down more, and relied on Tony penetrating the lane and Duncan doing his things….he absolutely abused Gasol. Yes Gasol got 19 points, but at least 5-6 of them came when Duncan was on the bench and Horry was guarding him…so basically Duncan vs. Gasol looks like 30/18 vs. 19(13-14 when Tim was guarding him)/7.
I’ll take those #’s any day.
Honestly, I think the Lakers have a LOT to worry about now. The Spurs got tired (even though they won’t admit it, everyone saw it, even the announcers). They went for a Manu 3 to win it, they knew they couldn’t do OT…they were too tired. Manu was just flat OFF, people were wondering (including you Amazing) if something was just wrong with him. Duncan still owns Gasol, and Parker is making Fisher make his lunch instead of Eva. Udoka played good, rest of the bench looked tired…yes they are old, but just tired….I am very concerned why Pop couldn’t see Ginobili was tired, and played him 38 minutes…he clearly didn’t have it tonight…they could have inserted KT instead of Manu, ran more of a defensive squad (KT played THREE minutes tonight) and probably would have held that Laker surge off….
Finley was 0/5…let’s hope he just sits a LOT more in this series… And the Spurs knew they blew it more than the Lakers won it…so I seriously doubt you’ll see a meltdown like that again. The Spurs are way too experienced and stuff to let that happen 2x.
Michael “Oh God he’s shooting another three pointer” Finley…. seems like he used the last of his young legs up in that Dallas Queers ‘06 series. Dude was dunking on anything that moved in that series, now he just looks sunken in…
by Justin Biehle on May 22, 2008 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions
Aye Finley is officially done
He was great last season, now he looks like he is basically “along for the ride” ala Stoudamire, etc… They should have played KT a lot more, shows they played him like 3 min. In any case, the Lakers outta feel very fortunate to come out of this one….even Jackson looked like that and said that much at the end of the game.
Again, Parker took it to them, Duncan did to, Manu had an OFF night as there ever was one for a superstar, we couldn’t buy a 3, even though they kept trying (why I don’t know, chalk it up to the NO series) and yet only lost by 4….on the night the Lakers were rested and the Spurs were dog-tired. I HAVE to like our chances of taking Game 2.
when he hit that tying trey against the phonics sons, i was actually in shock that he had contributed to something besides the other team’s lead… i think that was the last of his fuel reserves…

on a completely unrelated, yet decidedly non pessimistic note...
who are we getting rid of/reloading with next season… i just finished my season in NBA 2k8 and had to go through all the resigning and stuff… got me thinking. I know about Splitter and Mahinmi, who we both need, but Im wondering whom the Buford Brain Trusts feel would be suitable for world domination v.6.0….any thoughts?
I think Finley, Horry, Barry, Stoudamire, Thomas come off the books next year. They need to get some legit 3 pt. shooters, and someone who can defend…like clone Ime now.

Here’s what I’ve found after a simple search. Hopefully I’m looking at the right thing.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=2008freeagents
Off the bat, what do we need? This would be my order of priority:
1. A wing replacement for Barry/Finley that can shoot lights out and play some D.
2. A backup PG
3. An heir apparent to Manu
4. More prospects at RF/C for the Toros.
Here’s who I like off the list so far
James Posey (UFA)
Chris Duhon (UFA)
Lindsey Hunter (UFA)
Michael Pietrus (UFA)
Matt Barnes (UFA)
Jermaine O’Neal (early termination option)
Corey Maggette (early termination option)
Shawn Marion (early termination option)
Ron Artest (early termination option)
Antawn Jamison (UFA)
I think most of these guys will likely try to reup with their current teams and no one really jumps out at me as ideal fits for what we need. Trade? Eh, I don’t know that we really have the pieces for that. I guess the good news is that the Spurs’ brass has to break out the checkbook for someone this summer so maybe they’ll get greedy with a RFA.
Allez Spurs!
I fucking love this team!!!! Some rockets fan tried to question my fanhood today… I was surprised at how angry that made me…
or just plain dropkicked them in the orbital bone…

This is absolute fucking bullshit, i could not be more pissed right now,
i check the score at school, see we’re up 20, turn the computer off, and was as happy as can be for the rest of the day, knowing that surely we had won game 1 on the road, against a great lakers team, but then as soon as i get home i flick on the tv and see Kobe’s Hollywood comeback or some shit….... srsly this is by far the worst playoff loss yet, even more so than the hornets, if we had taken game 1 against the lakers, im sure they wouldnt have had the resolve to come back and win the series
And fckn Finley and Vaughn, they deserve a bullet each, ded srz, they absolutely suck ass, vaughn is a fucking joke who doesn’t know how to shoot, and finley…..well he’s michael finley, him and 0 for 5 attempts for 3 go hand in hand
