Popovich: Not that much better

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/ian_thomsen/05/02/weekly.countdown/1.html

"But it isn't like Gregg Popovich is that much a better coach than Byron Scott."

Here's a fun fact for you: Byron Scott has coached in 318 fewer games than Popovich ... and lost 14 more. Gregg Popovich has won more than twice as many games as Scott has. But he's lost fourteen fewer.

Scott has more fail than Pop. Pop has more than twice as much win as Scott.

How much is "that much" anyway?

Wow, is that guy a New Orleans homer or just a Spurs hater? That was one of the most unbalanced previews I have ever read. He barely even mentioned the Spurs. Apparently the Suns only lost because Hill was out, and Pop resorted to Hack a Shaq. It had nothing to do with the fact that the Spurs are championship caliber program.

I love how he thinks Tim Duncan’s only contribution to the game will be to whiff on defense against David West, or to not be put to “good use” against Chandler. Duncan is arguably the best PF to play the game. He can contribute in so many ways, and Pop will likely let Duncan rest on D against put-back Chandler, and put Crazy Eyes on West. That way Duncan will be close to the paint to get those help blocks he’s so good at (certainly seems like “good use” to me).

I did appreciate that he called the Parker and Paul matchup a near draw, but of course he had to mention that the Hornets “lethal” jumpshooters (Peja and Mo) tilt the balance in their favor. Uhh, has this guy not noticed that Mo Peterson stinks, and that the Spurs have their own lethal shooters?

You already covered the coaching comparison idiocy, but there is one more thing that moron left out. A certain Manu Ginobili! How can he write up a preview of this series with no mention of a certain Argentinian Assasin?

I have no problem with someone picking New Orleans, but he needs to realize that they are no longer playing a hapless Mav-wrecks team ripped apart by internal strife. The Hornets are playing the defending champs, and he needs to take a look at why they present an enormous obstacle (bug zapper?) for the Bees.

My sports trivia isn’t great, but I can’t think of another dynasty in any other sport that people are as quick to rule out as the Spurs.

Says that was taken from an NBA advanced scout. Must work for the Grizzlies or another mediocre team.
