Round 2, Game 7: at New Orleans
Needless to say, we need this one. This should be a great, great game. I fully expect us to play one of our better games on the year. And we'll need it.
My two cents on the strategy. We have to harass Paul off the screens. We need to trap, push our bigs out, and try to make one of the other Hornets beat us with their passing. And we have to change things up.
Here's my big tip though. I think we have to attack Paul's right hand. Make him drive left and, if possible, make him finish and PASS with his LEFT hand. I don't think Paul is nearly as skilled with his off hand as Nash is. Nash passes great with his left hand. He's also mastered the ability to finish around the rim with his left and throwing up a shot at full extension away from the big defender. I don't think Paul has these skills. I'd like to see us force him left AND not let him come back to his right hand. Play him the way people play Ginobili.
So, pay attention during the game, and let me know of I am wrong. Is Paul effective with his off hand? Can he finish around the rim and are his passes accurate?

GAME 7 PREVIEW
Damn… was writing the fanpost. You beat me to it.
19:30 PM SA – 21:30 PM ARG

______________
(Sort of) Interesting facts:

► Previous games: They have met 4 times this season.
→ Nov/09/07 – SA 97 | NOH 85 – @ NO.
→ Jan/26/08 – NOH 102 | SA 78 – @ SA.
→ Feb/23/08 – SA 98 | NOH 89 – @ SA.
→ Mar/12/08 – NOH 100 | SA 75 – @ NO.
► Plays from game 6:
→NBA TOP 5 – May 15th: #2 – Ime Udoka: UDoka’s D
→Block of the night: Ime Udoka
→Assist of the night: Fabricio Oberto
► En this playoffs’ second round, home teams are 21-2. The only exceptions were Detroit against Orlando and Los Angeles against Utah.
► The last time SA had been in a do-or-die situation was in 2006’s postseason, when they were down 3-1 against the Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs won games 5 and 6, forcing a 7th game. You know how that ended…
► The Spurs dominated every category in the 6th game. They shot 49% FG (38/77) compared to the Hornet’s 41% (33/80). San Antonio also won on the boards by 45-40 and in assists by 28 to 13.
► The third quarter was the key, once again, in game 6. The Hornets quickly got into foul trouble. Chris Paul had two consecutive fouls (his 3rd and 4th), and West collaborated with another 2 (his 2nd and 3rd). Those fouls all happened in 1:05. Later, with 8:44 missing in the 3rd quarter, David West committed his 4th (offensive) foul and immediately earned a technical, too.
► West left the game injured with 10:11 left in the game, after a controversial play involving Robert Horry. The NBA reviewed the play and ruled that the contact was legal – therefore there won’t be any sanctions for the veteran player. You can see the play here.

Transmissions:

TNT will broadcast the game. However, one of the WMOE channels (probably WMOE 1) will also show the game. To watch these channels you need:
1. Internet Explorer
2. Sopcast
To tune into it: enter the STOOGETV site, go with your mouse to the WMOE button on the left-hand menu, and then click on the channel you want.
If that doesn’t work, check the links below:
During the game there should appear some Sopcast links. I’ll be around and paste them here, in the game thread, so let me know if you can’t find any feeds.
...And if there’s no other choice:
Well, Hornets, you force my hand
I didn’t want to do it, I really didn’t. Not in the second round. But a game 7 leaves me no choice.
I’m breaking out The Pic.

God loves us. Liston said so. We have this shit.
It's Ginobili Time
One of my favorite things about Manu is the way that he can rip the heart out of another team on the road, like he did against Denver. For us to come away with a W, I feel like it’s got to be a throwback to 2005 Spurs game. Tim and Tony dominate the scoring for the first three quarters, with Manu chipping, then Manu steps up huge, going to the basket again and again in the fourth quarter, and scoring something like 15 in the fourth to ice the game for us.
I have a good feeling about this game, despite our blowout losses. Maybe it’s because it seems impossible to blow out a good team four times in one series. Maybe it’s because I feel the Spurs would have the edge in a close game down the stretch. Maybe it’s because I’m a delusional Spurs homer. I don’t know.
Go Spurs Go.
Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!
I’m not going to put up any predictions because when I do we get our asses kicked. So all I’m going to say is that the Spurs better fucking win.
Yeah, totally with JR here. Everytime I post a score, we get pounded. I even voted FOR Nooch in the poll just to keep with the mojo (everytime I’m pissed and vote for Nooch, we come back and kill them. I’m a homer, but there’s no way I’m breaking that trend. You all know my heart). I believe, and will literally have an aneurysm if we don’t destroy them young’ens in Game 7.

After reading every preview for this game I’ve come to the conclusion the Spurs need to have more points after 48 minutes than the Hornets do. I figure we’ll win the game that way.
LETS DO IT
That’s been my pet peeve all series long. Anytime we’re not in paul’s face right off the screens, it gives him that split second of time to make his decisions. Get up in this dude’s face, make him go where he doesn’t want to go, and we’ll be in l.a. this week.

Okay, I love you sf4e. I really do. You’re insightful, ambitious, and hard working. You’re devoted, and a true SPURS fan, and with that we’ll always be family. But there’s no way in hell Gen. Patton said that. I’m gonna have to see references on that.

Thanks SiMA, but you know I couldn’t pass that quote up. I don’t know if you were in SA for the (scandalously close) Texas A&M/army game at the Alamodome in 2006, but a bunch of my fellow cadets made a huge sign with that quote on it to playfully taunt the army cadets on the other side of the field (seriously, the sign stretched from the end zone to the 10-12 yardline). I think West Point, A&M, and the Air Force Academy have all claimed that quote at one time or another, but it’s never been proven or disproven. And you know how crazy Aggies are…..lol!

do i ditch work for game 7?
i live on the opposite side of the globe. the game starts here at 8:30am. i don’t believe the game is even being shown here, so i would have to watch it online at one of those sites that lets you do that (wink). i’ll be at work, and our firewall won’t let any of those sites through anyway. and thanks to the firewall, i can’t even follow the game through nba.com’s courtside live.
so the only way to watch it (or even follow it!) is if i don’t got to work.

nope, thats blocked as well. most sites are unfortunately, including ptr (but curiously not all sb nation blogs – posting and toasting, sactown royalty, blazers edge all get through).

Then you don’t go to work. Short of maning the first response launch station for your country’s missle defense program, there’s nothing you can be doing that is more important than the SPURS in a playoff Game 7. SRF, I’m also around the globe. Fortunately I can get the feeds at work. Unfortunately I missed most of the game due to a meeting.. AND THEY WON!!! I have no idea what to do.
we know what you meant. We won Game 6. That’s what you’re saying
But I am from the future, and this is what I see saw:
Spurs 95
Hornets 91
In a perfect (future) world, Spurs by 10 or more
I sure hope your vision of the future is incorrect because I’m looking forward to a victory that doesn’t threaten the near-cardiac-events of 75% of the PtR faithful. A four point victory, while usually thrilling, in a Game 7 might cause too severe a rise in blood pressure throughout Spurs nation.
Please see if you can you re-consult your future viewing device and see if the future is set, or if we can choose. And if we can choose, then perhaps we can get that differential a bit higher.

Yes, I am from the future, 13 hours to be exact.. It’s 8am Tuesday right now, which what Mathew meant I believe. And yes… yes the Spurs won, dammit!! But I would have to get back to you on the final score though.
I like this new trend of just picking the winner instead of the final score, I have a better chance of being right. and I don’t have a headache for 10 minutes afterwards.
Going to miss the liveblog tomorrow night, gonna be in class till 9PM and then procede to run over small animals and anything else in the way to make it to the bar to catch the last quarter as soon as I get out.

got to do whatever it takes for tonite – conjure up the FSMs spirit, halo pics…whatever.
for my part, i have been waiting for the whole play-offs to date in order to bust out my first score prediction. i have been thinking about it long and hard over the last three days and i’ll say:
SA 92
NOOCH 79
i’m down with the “paul” rules. force him left and harass him off the screens. i’d rather his passes be 15+ from the rim as opposed to 3. at the end of the day for me, it comes down to tim’s ability to pull the cart and the team’s ability to keep NOOCH off the glass (particularly offensive glass).
will probably get a late start on being able to post during the game tonite, but i am sure that i will get my laptop back in time to chime in at some point. until then, i just hafta say it loud: go spurs go.

I usually don’t pay attention to which particular refs are in which game. So except for the whole Joey Crawford thing, which was national news when he was suspended, I have no idea about which refs have supposed griefs/feuds with the Spurs.
Didn’t Javie ref G3 in S.A. against the Hornets? We won that one – and it seemed to be called pretty fair.
Do any of tonight’s refs have “issues” with S.A. in general, or any of the Spurs specifically?
Everytime the Spurs pass the ball like that, an angel gets its wings. - Hipuks in G6 vs NOOCH
I don’t think we should trap Paul until the second half, and I’m not sure we should even do it then. Play him straight up with Parker and play West straight up with Duncan. The latter made a huge difference in game 6. It forced New Orleans out of it’s default offense, which was going to West isolated 15’ from the basket. He was literally getting as many barely-contested 15’ jumpers as he wanted. Duncan’s additional 4-6” length changes the entire dynamics of their offense.
If Paul is killing us with the pick and roll then we can aggressively trap him in the second half. Trapping a passing point guard away from the basket is a gimmick defense that will not work for long stretches of time, especially considering:
A) The Hornets have two reliable 3P shooters in Peterson and Peja.
B) West can hit the wide open jumper and is a decent passer.
C) Chandler is a beast on the offensive boards.
I’m not totally against the strategy, but it must be used sparingly.
agreed on the trap. pop changed up the defensive looks and match-ups right and left in game 6 and i thought it worked pretty well for the most part. didnt let them get comfortable. i think they will be ready for the trap tonite, but it could be effective if we throw it on them at certain times instead of every time.

I think you be straight and honest; the time for analysis is done. The Spurs will win because that’s what they do. That’s the only reason why they’ll win. We win because we keep pounding that rock and tonight the rock will break.
The Spurs have played better NO than NO has played SA. We’ve been in it NO up till the last half of the 4th. We've had chances and eventually, things will go our way NO. Regardless of the final scores (that have been run up in garbage time) we haven’t been dominated @ NO.

I was cut off in traffic today
As I hit my brakes to avoid a potential collision, I noticed that the car had a SPURS flag flying proudly on the driver’s side.
So, instead of getting angry, or pulling alongside for a little staredown, I realized that the driver must have been too distracted with the upcoming game to pay appropriate attention to driving.
And I let him go in peace.
Enjoy your evening, fellow Spurs fan.

Totally forgot to tell you guys, but I’ve pulled out a special mojo weapon tonight. In addition to the 20 year old t-shirt and jerseys, the pregame pizza, the banner re-hung upside down in my office, the Manu votive candle burning proudly…...... I’ve been saving a cuban Cohiba for a special occasion. It’s never been unleashed, never seen the light of day. It’s on the coffee table now, willing us to win so that it can be consumed. Never has such power been applied to a SPURS game. I’ve done all I can at this point; that combined with all of our collective mojo should be sufficient. Bring on the game already…
That said, I’m nervous as shit and ready for this thing to just be over with already. GO SPURS GO!!!
it wont last. i applaud him for always manning up and being open about everything, but from what he said doesn’t sound like he is actually committed to stop gambling. maybe just enough time for it to blow over and he’ll go back. not that it is ruining his life or anything though. man i just hate the media, they try and make so much noise about nothing. who cares if he likes to gamble, he’s a multi-millionaire.
anywho enough of that rubble. i’m signing out until after the game. every time i’ve gone to a bar we’ve won so i am going to get hammered and either scream in pure happiness or pure fury. i’m sad that chuck picked NO to win when he has as much of a mancrush on gino as i do.

I just spent some quality time with the slow-motion feature of Tivo, and I think it’s entirely possible, maybe even likely, that the referees were in fact correct that Manu Ginobili’s foul on Chris Paul was after the light came on the backboard. Possibly a good call, even though when I first saw it I thought the contact was clearly pre-buzzer. Also, the more you watch it, the more it looks like Paul throwing his body into Manu Ginobili.

stuck at work answering phone calls while stoogetv shows WHEEL OF FORTUNE
what the….?
As long as we win…As long as we win…
Fuck, fuck, fuck. Two turnovers in a row. They are missing shots. We need to score.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:09 PM CDT reply actions
Whine, and
We’re not going to hit jumpers all night. We need to go inside.
chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
good defense.
Tony needs to keep hounding Paul. He just got a 4 minute break.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:10 PM CDT reply actions
Wow. We need to pull our head out of our ass and execute.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:11 PM CDT reply actions
Is it wrong for me to hope that we’re not leading at the half? I don’t want to be losing, just not leading. And I don’t want it tied.
The Spurs should be trailing right now. They’re playing terribly.
chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
Paul is getting his hands on every pass..Manu needs to better with the basketball!
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:13 PM CDT reply actions
Screw that SiMA. Let’s hit a couple 3’s and open this up.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:15 PM CDT reply actions
Ely traveled like Tony under the basket.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:16 PM CDT reply actions
Boy their bench sucks..and West went out..keep attacking.
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:16 PM CDT reply actions
Bonzi had Horry’s jersey. Did you see him push Rob in the head? Pretty funny.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:17 PM CDT reply actions
LatinD, you had this up before it happened on TNT
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Parker totally Pauled Chris Paul. He lowered his shoulder and ran him out of the play.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:19 PM CDT reply actions
It’s incidental contact because the victim is wearing the black.
chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
not a foul at all. it’s a physical game as pop would say
by ArizonaCactus on May 19, 2008 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, if he had a reasonable chance of saving it they might have called something.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions
What? Rob’s playing great.
Ok. I’m down with subbing. He looks like he is on fumes.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions
how is that Paul can get to the basket that easily?
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:21 PM CDT reply actions
Great job tnt
Talk about Horry hitting the 3 while showing bruce hitting a 3
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
There is a long way to go..no lead is safe..and Manu and Tony are both playing like shit too!
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:22 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah, I like our chances that they can play better.
Also, Paul hasn’t had a rest yet. Hopefully he’ll wear down and lose his legs.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I’m not seeing anything yet this game that makes me thing it’s not going to follow the same old script as the rest of this series.
chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
You mean you think we will be blowing them out since no game has been close.
Right?
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions
well it’s a different game..the past doesn’t dedicate the future.
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:23 PM CDT reply actions
That would be the opposite of clamping down.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:26 PM CDT reply actions
great he Paul throws his elbow in Ime and it’s a foul on us?
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:27 PM CDT reply actions
It was a foul. But a soft one on the reach.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions
udoka hit him on the arm…that’s a foul. not a hard foul, but a foul nonetheless
by ArizonaCactus on May 19, 2008 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions
We are missing shots. We need to make shots.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:28 PM CDT reply actions
You know it’s better that the Hornets go on their run in the second quarter rather than the 3rd!
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:29 PM CDT reply actions
Looks like that timeout did Manu and Tony a lot of good!!!!
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:30 PM CDT reply actions
There is the make-up touch foul. Peja touched his eyebrow.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:30 PM CDT reply actions
The good thing is it looks like the Hornets went on their run in the second and hopefully not in the 3rd quarter
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:30 PM CDT reply actions
we need some make-up fouls considering the kind of shit the hornets get away with.
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:31 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah… that shoulder Paul puts into defenders never gets called. And he does it EVERY SINGLE DRIVE.
chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
tp and manu do the exact same thing…calm yourself
by ArizonaCactus on May 19, 2008 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Personally, I don’t think a game could be called better than what we are seeing.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions
I like that the Cactus is lurking on our board. Makes me feel good. I’m sure he’s pulling for the Spurs too.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:31 PM CDT reply actions
You are so busted pulling for the enemy. We’ve overcome you with our class!
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
not pulling for the enemy…but i do find the site here good for discussion…and if nothing more, i offer the spurs my utmost respect.
by ArizonaCactus on May 19, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Well..they can’t Keep both Manu and Tony down for an entire half.
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:31 PM CDT reply actions
let’s hopefully finish the second quarter strong!
by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:33 PM CDT reply actions
Why? That would make my life so much less stressful.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions
totally agree… on threes no fouls on that last play
by TdotSpursfan on May 19, 2008 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Wow. We were awful defensively on those last two possessions.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:39 PM CDT reply actions
Halftime. We are up 9 and can definitely play better.
Also, Paul looked gassed at the end. We need to keep pushing the ball and pushing the pace and make him work.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:39 PM CDT reply actions
It’s because we were cursing him on his own personal blog.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions
But seriously
Who else has the balls in the Spurs to take that second 3? Can you imagine Pop’s reaction if he missed?
I love the guy.
They have 7 offensive board but we have 8 and are beating them on the glass by 10.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 19, 2008 8:41 PM CDT reply actions
Whatever the case out of this game, we need some young legs so f’ing bad. None of this Jaq Vaugn, Stoudamire, Grant Hill, Sam Cassell bullshit.
Hey peeps, my sister and my grandma are watching the game. I think I should start converting people to the Spurs’ path.
What ever it takes to win, my friend. What ever it takes. Don’t even let them stop watching tonight.

by adam8065 on May 19, 2008 8:57 PM CDT reply actions
Thank god Manu is making his 3 pointers..it is going to mean New Orleans might have to cover Duncan one on one!
