My "Serious" Bill Simmons Impression, But Well Written

Game 7 Preview , kinda. Not really. Incidentally, I like trapping Paul before he can get to the pick-and-roll, I like playing West straight up with Timmy, and I like the idea of going to Hack-a-Tyson in the 3rd quarter, just to mix shit up and throw off their rhythm and intensity.

I love all three.

Trapping Paul; TD on West; Hack-a-Tyson in the 3rd—

Yes, yes, and yes.

Game 7 “notes” from MySA.com … looks like Fab is going to start again (same Game 6 lineup) and Udoka might be the 1st off the bench !

Yay!

Great job, Michael

My favorite line: The Spurs will always be despised for what they’re not – high-flying, chest-thumping, trash-talking, alley-ooping Americans – rather than praised for what they are: socially unembarrassing, intelligent, cohesive, willful champions.

It’s interesting that as razor-thin close as the regular-season race was in the West, it’s the 1-3 seeds that are still standing. [And in the East, the 1,2 and 4 seeds still remain.]

Do NOT attempt to trap CFlop.

He is too strong and too athletic, two atributes we lack…there were be an avalanche of open jump shots..they missed them in SA, but they won’t on the delta.

Do let him go one on one with the Wee Frenchman.

The Owleans offense breaks down when Paul is the primary scorer…other players start losing their focus cause they ain’t getting their looks…they stop playing D because their O feeds their D.

Keep Potato Head on Stoyjack…the male porn star is a notorious choker..putting BB on him will lock out probably one of the most dangerous outside shooters in the association.

Bruce should only shoot spot up threes from the corners….there should be no shooting off the dribble under any circumstances.

Manu needs to wire his head and ass together…the multiple turnovers are killing us..on several occasions he has commited back to back to back horrible turnovers…we can’t have it..we just can’t have it.

Frenchy needs to go to the hole every time he sees a crack of daylight….his jumper is a secondary weapon only.

Everyone either needs to hit three point shots when there is nobody with 10 feet of them and they are standing alone and have time to setup or they get horse whipped.

Timmeh needs to establish deep low post position..this is the key to his success..yes it takes effort, but he should already know that…he needs to have part of his foot in the paint area when he recieves the post entry pass…this squaring up near the free throw line or on the baseline 10 feet from the basket is weak ass…take the bloody nose and bruises and start acting like a man.

Horry should foul and get under peoples skin, he should not be shooting the ball.

Start passing the rock around on every possession…this bullshit where Manu or Tone just holds the ball at the top of the circle and watches the shot clock tick down is nuts and bad basketball.

Fin dog needs to chug water from the fountain of youth for this one game.

The insects have a couple of players that are mentally unstable (Bonzi Wells, etc…)..they are going to be really amped up for game 7, so use it against them…poke at them..jump in front of them and try to draw charges…try the old bump and grind with them…chances are they either get pysched out of their game or they might even pick up some technical fouls.

Bones and Udoke needs some playing time.

Pop needs to call time outs when things start getting shakey and the Spurs are making consecutive turnovers…he needs to rip some peoples asses..get them to work for low position position…not to give up offensive rebounds…play interior defense..fight, scrap and dive for every loose ball.

This is game 7, time to stand up…man up..put these babys back in their cribs…show them why we are the champions..make them go to be every night of their life knowing that we are the best thing going to day.

Reply to CC

I disagree that we should not trap Paul - but I don’t think that TP on him is enough when they really have the pickandroll working. That’s why I advocate selective use of the trap (probably later in the game) like we did at the end of the 3rd quarter in G6. If we use it extensively, we give them too much time to see what we’re doing and design something to take advantage of it. But if we save it for the appropriate time, then we can spring it on them, make a run, and potentially pull away, or catch up - as the case may be.

I’m completely with you, CC, about the time outs. I hate it when the passes are getting sloppy, the offense lacks ball movement and we’re feeding their fastbreak with turnoveres—and Pop is refusing to call a TO. Call it stubborness or whatever; I just detest watching that going on without a break in the action. That being said: this is G7. I don’t see him doing any of that this game.

I also agree with having TD receive passes as he’s posted in the lane—but realize that this is incredibly difficult to do very often because Rule #1 when defending the post (especially against a player of Duncan’s status) is to deny that kind of position. Also, as Charlie Rosen points out, the reason you’re seeing GOAT PUFF squaring up near the free throw line is to discourage the double teaming that had served to completely remove Tim from the offense for huge stretches of the game.

Finally, if Manu avoides the three-turnovers-in-a-row pothole, and Frenchy either a) ignores his jumper to focus on drives to the bucket or, b) hits nearly every J he takes—then I like our chances to pull away from the NOOCHies.

I agree with almost everything

Except two things: First, how do you suggest we guard Paul if we don’t trap ol’ Scrappy Doo or let Parker go 1-on-1 against him? Put Duncan on him? Ginobili? Then we end up with Parker on a taller player (like Mo Pete) and bad things happen in that situation.

Second, I think TD should occassionally get the ball at the ft line extended or on the baseline. He has the agility and quickness to get by Chandler and to the rim AND with proper spacing it creates an open shot after one pass (usually to the opposite corner or elbow) instead of having to make 2 or 3 passes to get to the open man).

First time to post on this site, usually a casual observer who is amused by some of the outright idiocy and ocasional brilliance of some of the posters here.
What has prompted me to post, is part of the blog written by AaronStampler, regarding Horry’s foul committed last week…..

“I think it’s important – vitally so – to separate the actions of the man from the reaction of the fans. Cheering any player’s injury, even West’s, is an unforgivable sin. I know West has been a prick all series. I know he’s taken a lot of cheap shots at Fab. Still, that’s no excuse. You just don’t taunt a man who’s hurt. That’s bush league stuff. It’s another example of why the Spurs themselves are a far better team than most of their fans deserve. “

I would like to add my two cents, from the perspective of a fan who was in those stands, and who, yes, dare I say it, did chant Horry’s name along with a good many others. From where I sit, it was next to impossible to understand what was actually happening on the court, who had been injured, or why. I guess you good fans who are at home, or in other cities (?) have the benefit of seeing the play with a birds eye view, over and over again. If we are lucky, they replay it once on the jumboscreen.
The only thing the fans in attendance understood at that point was that Horry had fouled and stopped the play. How many times have the Hornets players flopped? That’s beside the point. The fact is we were not cheering that West had been injured, but that Robert Horry, playing in possibly the last home game for the Spurs, had made a significant contribution. Why on earth would the fans want to cheer that a player had been injured? Does that make sense to you? Do you think that if you were in the stands and saw a favorite player, playing limited minutes, make a contribution for perhaps the last time in front of the home crowd, you would not cheer?
I think that perhaps the fans at home have a skewed view of things, exactly as the media would prefer. Let the hype prevail…....
I have said what must be said, and please, if you must continue to think the Spurs fan in the arena, who pay a lot for a chance to be there for the team, are undeserving of the team, why don’t you get yourself a season ticket? Then you can blog away about your opinion of the fans with no complaint from me.

by docjohn on May 19, 2008 12:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

and exactly what was this “significant contribution” that Horry made that you speak of? He committed an offensive foul. You said yourself that you didn’t know West was injured. So either you’re cheering a Spurs turnover or a Hornets injury. What other component of the play was there?

Was it more like, “Yay, Robert Horry! He’s still breathing oxygen and is among the living! Yay!”

Was that what it was like?

by Aaronstampler on May 19, 2008 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Get Bitter Much?

The “significant contribution” was the fact that Robert had played in many clutch moments for the Spurs, and that was what we were cheering. Not some insignificant foul. We were cheering for the player, not the play. Nor the fact that someone was hurt on the play.
Sounds like you have some issues you may need to work out. Otherwise, I do enjoy reading your work, probably better than most professionals.
Also, thanks to Staves27 for at least having an open mind to the idea I was trying to convey.

Both Staves27 and Bellasa have comments on THIS thread about what they saw LIVE. You’ll also notice that Staves27 says at one point that he - and I’m assuming others - were cheering when they realized who it was. So, in some sense, you guys are both right. Not everybody was cheering that West got hurt and quite a few people apprarently didn’t know what happened. On the other hand, apparently some did.

I like Bellasa’s comment, in particular, that the crowd was cheering everything. Rebounds, points, and fouls. It was a rout. Why not cheer?

Why would you cheer for Horry stopping the play? We had the ball. I think i can possibly maybe understand getting caught up in the moment but don’t use the argument that he stopped the play. That doesn’t make sense at all.

i think this topic is getting way way to much attention on this site

First off as always that was an amazing piece by Stampler, he truly has a gift and I hope it gets recognized outside of this blog space. But seriously this whole Horry situation has been way over dramatized by the people who should be downplaying it. The national media hasn’t even given the Horry foul this much attention or grief for that matter. I know that Stampler and many of you hate Horry and I don’t care but don’t let that annoyance for one play and what he may or may not have done taint your opinion of the game, series, fans, other people’s view of this team, etc… Horry really did despicable thing last year by hip checking Nash and throwing a what would be (and yet still was but not the same degree) an amazing end to that series. I’ll always believe we were the better team and i think we proved that this year but there will always be that * as Big Chief Triangle likes to say on that series. Anyways the foul the other night was just a foul, not a cheap shot. Horry didn’t plan out that West would leap back into him, and it wasn’t some egregious hip check. It may have been a bit dirty, but look at the replay Horry wasn’t trying to floor him. DocJohn was right on though, we were cheering for Horry at the game not the play. What Stampler and others may not know is that that was the 3rd time in a row the crowd chanted Horry’s name, the other 2 times were also after fouls that had a less catastrophic result. No one (well mostly no one) was cheering for West being hurt because as i’ve said earlier and Docjohn pointed out it was impossible to see what was going on. So don’t blame the crowd. I’m well aware the masses are dumb by nature and this city has been in love with Horry since game 5 of the ‘05 finals (and i think we owe him eternal chants for that one and i would dare say that few of you would disagree) and for his brilliant work on those Ancira car commercials. Besides i’m sure everyone here hasn’t wished any ill will on anyone in there heart of hearts much less out loud (that last sentence was sarcastic).

Anyways all I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter, the series won’t be remembered for that play, that play was insignificant. West is young and is able to play and will probably play well until Timmy shuts him down (hopefully). Lets not cast shadows on this series when no one else is and lets support this team down to the last player especially one that under no rational circumstances will be back next year. I don’t think we will have a chance to repeat again anytime in the near future and believing in this team and especially the three guys that our the heart and soul of this team to lift us to new heights should be our focus of discussion.

again, for the player, not the play…...

by docjohn on May 19, 2008 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

one more time...

This is what I wrote on the other section of our blog.

“It was kinda strange last night. I think at the point that this call occurred, the crowd was really into the game and they were cheering for every stop, every foul, every point… just about everything. (If I remember correctly Manu had just hit back to back threes and we were really rolling).

I honestly don’t think our crowd realized anyone was hurt when the chanting began. It appeared that the first folks to realize there might be something wrong were those closest to that end of the basket. Then there was kind of a riple effect when the rest of the crowd realized someone might be hurt. Once the crowd finally snapped it got very quiet… then when West stood up the crowd began to applaud the fact that he appeared to be O.K.

Once again stupid and regrettable, but that’s how it seemed to happen.”

By the way Michael, as always, love, love, love your post. However, regarding Horry, it was more like yeah! we get the ball back and we can continue our push towards game 7. Do I know inside the hearts of all our fans? No, but I do like to believe that most people – our fans included – would not wish another player injured.

I am happy. I am proud. - Manu Ginobili

In earlier comments on this blog...

Someone who was at the game said they couldn’t really see what was going on when West initially hit the deck. The chants grew from loud, to quiet, to silence, when they realized West was hurt. When he finally got up, the crowd cheered.
I don’t know originally why someone would have chanted his name. Maybe for being a “tough guy” or “enforcer.” I don’t know
