Round 2, Game 5: at New Orleans
It's a best of three series now.
The Spurs have some good Mojo going right now but they are headed back to the hive. Can we keep up the pressure and force the youngsters to crack? Or will Chris Paul and David West step up their games and send us back home desperate?
I think we have pretty much covered every angle of adjustments, superstitions, opinions on Paul and West, and the refs.
So, let's predict our three stars for Game 5. Who, in the Big 3, has the biggest game? Who comes up big for us off the bench? Who has the hot hand from outside?

I’m filled with so much angst, I can’t make a prediction. I will say that if TD puts up a stat line like – 21 points, 15 rebs, 3 blks, 3 ast. I like the Silver and Black’s odds.

C’mon DennardC, let that angst loose. Just let it go. You’ve got too much man-love for Paul.
Just kidding. I had to get that in there.

Lol, It’s not Paul that worries me so much. I’m scared I’m gonna jinx them. I think every game I’ve predicted the Spurs to win this postseason they’ve lost.

Parker is going to go for round 35/12 assists. Duncan has his best game in the series with 25/15, and Gino does what he does around 20 points. And if Udoka can come out with the same confidence he played with in game 4, he will be the bench player making the biggest difference for us defensively as well as with his 3point shooting!!! Spurs win 100/92. Spurs in 6
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned these things yet if they have sorry for the repeat. 1st thing. Reggie Miller calling Pop the “Gambler” because he inserted Manu into the starting line up. Doug Collins is the only national commentator who I think actually watches the Spurs play with some regularity. Every other announcer talks about Gino like it is 2004 and he’s having some breakout year. The other thing was in the third quarter I think about 5 mins left in the period CP3 got the the rim, scored, and drew the foul and let out a big “WOOOO!!” They were down by 18 at the time with no momentum… Why doesn’t the media make a big deal out of this the way they did with Manny Rameriz in the post season last year when he homered and hoisted his hands in the air as if he just hit the walk off HR even though they were down…4 I believe late in the game. Paul is really getting amazing treatment by the refs and media. Making me sick.
As far as game 5 goes. I still see it going either way. We are in their heads right now but they’re mental instability can also work in their favor. As quickly as we’ve demoralized them they can regain their swagger. It could only take 1 good quarter and they’ll think they’re on top of the basketball world again. I think it’ll come down to the 4th quarter with us playing from behind much of the second half. Manu having the biggest game for us.

Manu looks healthier in each game..and no way in Hell Peterson, Wright, Paul, Peja, Wells, or Pargo can guard him…can believe that has how many different defenders the Hornets have used on Manu?
If he starts making his 3 point shots he can go for 38 points; if not then 25 to 29 points!
Manu wills the Spurs to victory, with the help of course from Timmeth; and our French assassin!

Horry makes history
RoHo breaks Kareem’s record for most playoff games played tonight.
http://my.nba.com/forum.jspa?forumID=570005125
Read the part where they ask Kareem if he thinks Horry should be in the Hall one day… he avoids the question very well… actually, he pretty much says “Hell No”.
So, in honor of his 238th playoff game, I’m gonna call a Horry winner with less than five seconds left. Do I want him taking the last shot? Nope. Have I ever wanted him to take our last shot? Nope. I’d rather he not get off the bench at all tonight unless we’re up by 20 with 3 minutes left. But I’ve been wrong about him before, I’d like to be wrong about him one more time.

(Sort of) Interesting facts:

► Previous games: They met 4 times during the regular season.

→ Jan/26/08 – NOH 102 | SA 78 – @ SA.
→ Feb/23/08 – SA 98 | NOH 89 – @ SA.
→ Mar/12/08 – NOH 100 | SA 75 – @ NO.
► Great plays from the 4th game:
→NBA TOP 10 – May 11th
#7 – Tim Duncan: penetrates for the +1.
#2 – Tony Parker: turns and makes a layup in between 3 Hornets.
► The Hornets won the first two games at home by an average margin of 18.5 ppg (18 and 19). The Spurs won the last two, also at home, by a margin of 15.5 ppg (11 and 20).
► San Antonio had at one point a 27 points lead and was ahead in the score most of the game, except for its first 3:24 minutes. With 8:36 left in the first quarter, a layup by Tony put the Spurs ahead for good.
► The Spurs shot 51% from the field; the Hornets shot 40%.
► A key for this victory was the Spurs’ aggressiveness to get to the basket. 40% of their points were in the paint (40 out of 100).
► Tony and Manu did a very nice job distributing the ball. Each had 8 assists, combining for 16 of the Spurs’ 27 assists. On the other hand, the Hornets only had 12 assists, 5 of them by Chris Paul.
► San Antonio won the rebounds battle 45-36 and dominated the offensive during the cardinal third quarter, finishing with a 30-19 partial.
► Parker and Duncan’s efficiency was remarkable. They combined for 18 of 25 FGs (72%!). The only spot where they struggled was the FT line, with 7 of 13 (54%).
► Robert Horry tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record for most postseason games played with 237.

My heart says that the Spurs have the momentum and their experience will carry them in this game. However all the other series, including this one have been dominated by the home teams. It is hard to believe that the same teams that look so dominant at home look so pathetic on the road. I fear that the same pattern will follow here.
However, if Bowen locks down Peja again, and the Spurs hit shots, they should win. I am hoping for a repeat of game 3 in Phoenix where the Spurs jumped out fast and Phoenix could never catch up.
Although I would love to see Manu be the hero, I don’t think it can happen unless Parker is totally off his game. Pop has told him to be aggressive in trying to score and that is what will happen from the get go. So if Tony is stinking it up, Manu will have to step in. But Tony stinking it up will most likely mean a loss for the Spurs. So I think we will see Tony in the high 20’s, Tim around 20, and Manu around 16 or 17.
I didn’t want to think that we could beat these turkeys 4 straight but after reading this in the NO newspaper I feel more confident. Apparently, Mr. Scott is asking his players what the hell to do on defense against our boys. Sounds like a desperation move cause Scott doesn’t have any answers on how to handle the pick-and-rolls, Tony or the 3 point shooters. Even Chandler asked to try to take Timmy one-on-one. I can only hope they’re dumb enough to let him do that, he’ll either get burnt and abused repeatedly or foul out in the 2nd quarter. Add that to the fact that it seems West is getting pissed off at the Fab-O/KT money combo earlier and earlier every game and I thinnk we got this shit in the flaming bag.

If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
3 hilarious points from that article:
1: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE defend Duncan one-on-one. Chandler’s pretty cocky for getting absolutely owned game 4 and not even putting up a FGA.
2: C-Flop says Peja doesn’t have to score to be effective? Really? I must have missed his suffocating defense. Perhaps I was too caught up in admiring his 10 pounds of hair gel.
3: C-Flop says good offense beats good defense any day? Really? First, this obviously isn’t the case. You went apeshit game 3 and still lost big. Also, should you really be contradicting everything your coach and fellow all-star say?
This article makes it pretty clear the Hornets are in complete disarray. I was confident before the game, but now I expect a blow out. Scott asks his players to defend? Could you imagine if Pop pulled that shit. And this guy was COTY. What an overrated buffoon. I expect the Hornets to come out with their thug intensity and make it close for a quarter, maybe C-Flop will get the refs on their side, but I don’t expect it to be close at all after that. BScott has essentially conceded they have no defensive answers, they can’t play with any defensive cohesion, and the team can’t even agree on the game plan. Their lack of defensive scheming or execution should give us a big win, and if we can cause a similar disruption of their chemistry and swagger on the offensive end, I’ll be looking for a similar result as game 4.
by One4theThumb on May 13, 2008 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Yea I enjoyed the good offense beats good defense quote. Let’s just ignore that the Spurs, the strongest defensive team of the past decade have won 4 titles in that time, and let’s also ignore all the battles of superior offense vs. superior defense manifested by the annual Suns vs. Spurs playoff series have all tilted towards the defensive team. Damn, I thought this guy was supposed to be an “A” student of the game here.
If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
I think the scoring load between the big 3 will be about the same as game 4, maybe slightly higher. I’m still waiting for Manu to start canning his 3s at a better clip than this 2-7 crap, but overall he’s showing good signs of coming back to life. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him go off tonight. One of you guys said it earlier, but we need to continue our work on the boards – I think that is a big key for us. But other than that, we pretty much do the same thing, and they have no answer. If Pop wouldn’t have screwed around the first two games with Bruce on Floppy, then I don’t even think NOOCH would have pulled out both of those victories, and they sure as heck wouldn’t have been blowouts. Even with a sick TD. Anyway, I feel good now that we have our game back on.
SPURS 97
nooch 90
i predict that the game will go to the team that wins the batlle of the boards. nothing stokes your passion to play like offensive rebounds, particularly with a young team like the NOOCH. if the spurs can keep them off the glass, they will win.
i am taking nothing for granted here. their fans will be jacked and their team will be ready to play for them. spurs really really really have to avoid a defensive lapse that sees the NOOCH hit everything they throw up over a five mintue stretch. those intestine grinders were just plain painful to see in the first two games. they pulled a mini-run like that at the end of the first half in game 3 as well. had bruce and manu not hit back to back miracles, i’m not sure where the spurs would be right now.
top dog for the spurs will be timmy. win or lose, we will go how he goes.
my prescription is keep it close until the last 6, take care of the glass and gut it out at game’s end. i’m afraid that the rock will need a full 101 blows to get this one.
I couldn’t agree more. The Spurs need to rebound and play physically to win. This is one they are going to have to grind out.

That article doesn’t say anything to do with this series. He doesn’t talk about experience, the defending champs, the adjustments, anything. This is why I hate hollinger. I can go look up the history myself, I don’t need you to tell me the percentages. It’s terrible analysis, has little to no explanatory power, and I am utterly appalled that this man is paid by ESPN. He’s almost as bad as the sports guy, though in a totally different way.
by One4theThumb on May 13, 2008 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Hollinger’s fine for what he does: which is to write a numerical-based analysis of the game. This kind of thing is fine as far as it goes, but the issue is that numbers can’t measure everything. And they especially fall short with a team like the Spurs, because of the way Pop use the regular season to ramp up for the playoffs, instead of trying to prove what the team is capable of. Teams like S.A. defy the numbers all the time.
In fact, it’s nice to know what Hollinger’s numbers expect, because it shows just one more way that this team is so special. Most teams with these numbers wouldn’t be able to do what the Spurs do.
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
Right his numbers in this article is just about percentage of teams winning in this position. Nothing statistically significant to either team, PER, or anything. So it’s a lot more than just “overlooking a team like the spurs because of regular season”, this is about every team that goes 0-2 2-0.
by One4theThumb on May 13, 2008 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions
To further insult hollinger, in his chat today, he said that from just watching the series, he thinks the hornets win in 7. So don’t let him off the hook. He’s a dumbass. He’s bitter than Manu didn’t decline. Also, I’m too stoked for tonight to be rational…

The Bottom Line
We need to win at least one game in NO to win the series. Winning on the road separates the men from the boys, the champions from the losers. Last year the Spurs were 7-2 on the road in the postseason. It’s no coincidence, then, that they copped the ‘chip.
To get this series we need to win a road game. And the sooner the better—lets not procrastinate. Let’s get this!

Tim with 28, 16, 5, and 5.

bones, take note, they only have 2 offensive boards in this game.

We got this… they didn’t change their game plan at all except hope the home court gives em more energy
If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
This is not a strong finish. Funny C-Flop can’t outrun Horry tho

Pop loves the fantasy of rekindling the Big Shot Rob mystic. I think stampler wrote it a year back:
Am I the only one here a little annoyed with RoHo’s game-by-game Lucy Van Pelt routine to Pop’s Charlie Brown? What a cocktease this guy is. Every game Pop brings him in with a couple minutes left in the 1st quarter to see if this is the night that “Big Shot Bob” will decide to show up. And nine out of ten times Horry slumps back to the bench six minutes later, never to resurface while Pop contemplates the Bonner vs. Tinyball 4th quarter dilemma. Let me try to explain this as simply as I can. We’ve got this guy on our team. He’s wild, he’s energetic, he does crazy things. He dribbles behind his back, draws charges, deflects passes, hits threes and even dunks every blue moon. Also, and this is important, he speaks the español. Really I can’t stress that part enough. His ethnicity and native language is one of the major reasons the home fans are drawn to him.

Shit Robert. Some offensive boards are helping them right now. Right Bones?

West is 10-14. And he just missed a shot to get there.

This looks a lot like the first half of games 1 and 2. Please god don’t let it be that way in the second half
Gotcha. I like his stuff too. They just need to let him talk more.

Kenny’s been on our side the whole series even though Charles has abandoned us

Because he’s being patient and also because he isn’t getting into the paint much. I don’t know if he has really tried to take many jumpers.

The Hornets scored 21 and 23 points in the first two quarters. That is right where they have been most quarters in the series. If we don’t let them explode for a 30+ in the third I think we are in great shape.

To me this seems like one of those games where Manu goes off and carries us for like 15 pts in the 4th.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
