Byron Scott: Adjustments

His team has just been blistered by an average of 15.5 points.  Duncan is now healthy and Manu is starting (and his ankle is showing signs of improvement.  What adjustments does he make going into game 5?

I am thinking his best bet will be to start Bonzi.  Peterson is garbage.  When Bonzi is defended by Manu, he can punish him in the post and tire him out.  The drawback to that is that I don't think Bonzi is in good enough shape to play 35 minutes plus.  However, he still might do it just to get Bonzi 20 minutes or so against Manu, instead of 20 minutes against Ime.  That could potentially give them the third scoring option that they have been missing since Peja came down with that intense rash.

Poll
Adjustments:
  • Start Bonzi in place of Peterson
  • Start Pargo in place of Peterson
  • Start Julian Wright in place of Peja
  • Stand pat
  • Something else

I hope they start Bonzi over Mo Pete. If they start Bonzi and turn their flowing offense into a stagnant post up game revolving around Bonzi I’d be elated. Much the same way the Suns sacrificed their offensive flow for posting up Diaw, only Bonzi isn’t near the passer as Diaw out of the double team. And Diaw isn’t even that good. The less the ball is in Pauls hands the better for us. One move that I think would help the Hornets would be bringing Peja off the bench and putting Wright in. Like the Hornets fan on here said- if Peja isn’t getting open looks then what’s the point of him being in? He’s a defensive liability and he won’t make the extra hustle play to get a loose ball or offensive rebound. At least Wright does those things.

I’m confused. Do I answer as an objective NBA fan, or as a SPURS homer?

As a SPURS homer, BScott really needs to stick with starting Peja. He’s just had a bad couple of games, that’s all. He’ll heat back up. He is, after all, a playoff seasoned veteran. Scott needs to remain confident and stand strong in his plans and designs. They did blow out the SPURS in the first two games, and Peja torched the SPURS in those. Stick with it. Please. Peja’s the answer, don’t cave in to pressure. You’ve already got the COTY award; there’s no need to prove anything now.

As an outside observer, it will only confirm my suspicions that BScott is highly overrated if he continues to start Peja. He’s gotta start JWright. Wright’s got more D, more passion, the outside shot, the confidence and the athletisism (yeah, I spelled it that way) over Peja. Wright will at least make Bruce work harder and likely be open more for Paul to find on the wing. He gives the Nooch offense more depth, and his starting allows an experienced shooter to come off the bench.

All that said, I don’t see how BScott can make any adjustments that will stem the tide. We’re in their heads AND we’ve learned their MO. His greatest adjustment should come in the form of speeding up their transistion game, and nothing more.

Listen to the SPURS fans, BScott. Peja’s money, and he’ll soon destroy San Antonio. Keep with it.

Another thing BScott could do is again show the team his rings before Game 5. That’s a pretty powerful tool, and he likes pulling them out before big games.

:: insensitive snicker ::

Meanwhile, as a San Antonio SPURS fan, the only ring I care about is….. the next one.

I have read a lot of love for Wright from Hornets fans, and Reggie Miller has an unnatural fixation on the guy, but I just don’t see him cutting it as a starter. Though Peja has been bothered by Bruce, he is still a veteran playoff performer who can knock down cluctch baskets and will not likely make poor decisions.

Wright is a 20 year old rookie who only averaged 11 minutes per game this season. Is he really going to be able to execute as a starter against the San Antonio Spurs? I think he can be hounded into some turnovers. If the Hornets best shot at winning the series is Julian Wright then I really like our chances.

by VWolf on May 12, 2008 2:58 PM CDT   0 recs

If the hornets best shot at winning this series is Peja Stojakovic, then I really like our chances too.

At this point, I just plain ol’ like our chances period.

i dont know about starting one guy over the other, but i think that utilizing wells on the offensive end is one thing the NOOCH ought to look at. the two big problems with that is slowing of the offense and having to live with wells on the defensive end. but you gotta make some trade offs.

if i’m them – objectively – i would try to get both wells and mo pete going and the expense of peja’s touches/minutes whether or not he starts. mo pete is athletic, can score and is a good shooter if you give him room. run some screens and plays for him early to see if you can get it going. i say that they should go ahead and try wells too – he has proven a tough cover for the spurs in the past .

however, the biggest thing for the NOOCH, if you ask me, is rebounding. they smoked SA in the first two games by getting to the offensive glass. they caused a dog fight for 80% of game 3 by doing the same. they got crushed on the boards in game 4 and the result was a blow out. wells gives you more offensive rebounding than any of the other opitons that i have mentioned so far, which is another reason to feature him more.

SiMA is right in saying that they don’t seem to have a great number of lead-pipe adjustments that they can make, but that doesnt mean that they can’t beat the spurs. they can – particularly at home.

as good as game 4 looked for us, there is a long, long way to go, and if NOOCH can win the battle of the glass, the spurs will have a very hard time with them. be mindful that the pendulum of play-off basketball can swing back away from you just as easily as it came your way. our guys are still in a very big dog fight here.

by bones on May 12, 2008 3:32 PM CDT   0 recs

I honestly think all necessary adjustments for the NOOCH are on the defensive end. If they can’t stop us from scoring, they can’t run. If they can’t run, they will have a hard time scoring against us. The more they run, the more effective Peja will be. We scored 82 and 84 points in games 1 and 2. We hit 100 and 110 in games 3 and 4.

If they don’t find a way to slow us down, they are in deep doodoo.

by AusTechSpur on May 12, 2008 3:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Actually, Kelly Dwyer wrote on this. They’re not a running team. They’re fine in the halfcourt.

What they need to do is close out like game one and two and figure out a way to get peja and west going again. Basically, they need to travel time to a week ago.

DooDoo or Don'tDon't

So how does Pop adjust to the adjustments?

If Bonzi replaces Peja, do we just but Bruce on Bonzi and let Manu/Fin guard Slo-MoPete and keep Tony on Scrappy?

If Peja goes out for Bonzi then my guess is that Pop pulls Bowen for Ime and saves Bruce for hounding Paul when Tony is out or both Pargo and Paul are in. Similar to what Pop did with Bruce in the Suns series. Bruce had a few games where he only played 20 or so minutes against the Suns. Unless, of course, Bruce is on fire from the corner.

by AusTechSpur on May 12, 2008 4:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I’d say that if they replace Peja with Bonzi, then yes, but I would expect him to replace Mo Pete before Peja. Mo Pete already plays limited minutes as a starter, and I think Scott trusts Peja more than Pete and he would also rather exploit the Wells/Manu matchup rather then let us off the hook somewhat with Wells/Bowen (though Bowen has been schooled by Wells in the past).

by VWolf on May 12, 2008 4:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t think that Scott is gutsy enough or his team experienced enough to be switching out key starters more than halfway through a series. I really can’t think of another team that can do that and be more successful over more than a game than the Spurs, you really have to have the right personnel to make those changes. Look at the Suns they are almost as old and experienced as the Spurs and what did switching up their lineup and game plan do…nothing. It just threw off Nash and Amare, their only hopes of winning. If anything Scott has to make Peja the offensive focal point at the beginning. Run him around like Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton, 2-3 screens and catch and shoot type of plays which Peja is more than capable of converting. I agree with the above its to the Spurs benefit if they change up the lineup – they get 1 guy going at the expense of not only their gameplan but their identity.

As long as we can keep it Paul and West v. the Spurs or even better just Paul v. the Spurs we can get this next game. hopefully they can pull that off

by staves27 on May 12, 2008 5:26 PM CDT   0 recs

Peja as a catch-and-shoot guy?

I gotta say that I don’t see that as his strength.

While there’s no doubt that he’s an excellent spot up shooter who (while he has his spots) can drain shots from all over, I have never seen him do much coming off screens to get a pass and shoot immediately.

Conditioning concerns aside (and these are not small) it’s an entirely different skill to master, and not a role I see Peja very comfortable with.

I think thihs is one of the reasons SiMA was saying that he likes our chances so much—if Peja was able to do more than he’s shown in games 3&4, I think we’d have seen it already.

Yet another reason why Pop is a friggin genius. All those variety of line-ups throughout the season really pay off when it counts.

Thinking back to the 2003 Finals, Byron Scott isn’t exactly the master at adjustments.

by JamesR on May 12, 2008 5:54 PM CDT   0 recs

We are definitely not of the woods yet. They still do have home court and they seem pretty good there. The only thing that comforts me is that we are clicking on all cylinders after craptastic beginning, much like how our regular season unfolds. If we win Tuesday then we win the series.

I agree with staves, BScott isn’t good enough to make the starter swtiches. It’ll really come down to the players in game 5 for NO. They have a shot if West gets untracked in time. But we are in their heads and I really like our chances in game 5.

It's the Hotel Boss

What Scott needs to do is change hotels … yeah, that’s the trick! Oh, wait a minute, they’re playing at home. Well, fuck it. Each player gets to stay at another player’s home. C’mon Scott get creative, man.
