The Rifle Man, Chuck Person! Though he wasn’t quite the status of the “Microwave” , Chucky always reminded me of Vinnie Johnson coming off the bench for us in the 90’s. I would get so pumped when he made a three, Almost as good as a Manu Tres. Loved and still do love Beno Udrih. I always thought he was mis/underused in our system. I’m so happy to see him doing well in SacTown. Carl Herrera, not Rip Hamilton, was the first player to make the face mask cool. And you gotta feel for Vinny D! Only missed a ring by one year, poor guy. Great elevation on his jump shots and could stroke it. Speaking of elevating on jump shots, did Danny Ferry ever get more than 3 inches off the ground? Seriously. And lastly my the man who started the spurs revolution for me David Robinson. Most athletic big man ever? Quite possibly. I would have loved to see Robinson in his prime up against Dwight Howard. I love the Spurs!!!!

I loved CP, but was a big Dale Ellis guy too.
Great list, FiCS. I’ll be printing this out.
BTW- What’s “CS?” Colorado Springs, perhaps?

I used to be obsessed with Dale Ellis in 4th grade. I was at the game when he made his 100th three and I met him once because he was my mom’s friend neighbor. he was smoking and shooting in his driveway, and he gave me his autograph. it was very exciting for me as a ten year old.

for SgtinManusArmy:
Thanks, dude. And to your Q… Nah, it’s not Colorado Springs, although I wish it could be:) It’s CzechoSlovakia. Nowadays there are two republic: Czech and Slovak. But I was born in CS, that’s it. Anyway, I thought it would be crowded here with Spurs fans’ comments. Let’s get controversial a little bit: Do you think Tony Parker will end up as the best guard in the Spurs history? I think he’s headed there. Mmm, your take, Icemen?

I liked most of the guys. If I had to pick three All-Spurs teams, it would look something like this [by position as much as possible, with time as Spurs players only]:
First Team:
TD
M. Mitchell [only 6’6”, but he could post up and dial it up!]
DR
Iceman
TP
Second Team:
Special K [L. Kenon]
S. Elliott
A-Train [A. Gilmore]
Manu
Captain Late [J. Silas]
Third Team:
M. Olberding
BB
T. Cummings
A. Robertson
J. Moore
I have Cummings at center [which he sometimes played anyway] b/c I couldn’t justify putting Swen Nater [only two years w/the Spurs] or Billy Paultz there. That allows Olberding [a solid forward] to make the cut over Malik Rose. Bowen makes the third team b/c even though he is limited offensively, he has been so dominant defensively [just like Ice was limited defensively but out-of-this-world offensively].
FiCS, I actually live in the CR. Where are you living now?

I’m surprised (shocked?) that I’ve got a buddy-Spursfan in the CS. I actually live in the SR. How’s your take on Alvin Robertson?

My Slovak friend...
Great to meet you! How did you first become a Spurs fan?
I really liked Alvin Robertson. He was a great defender – extremely quick with quick hands. He led the NBA in steals several times, and still has the highest career steals-per-game average [2.71 per game]. He didn’t have a great jumper, but knew how to slash and score. He is one of only four NBA players to ever record a quadruple-double, and he is the only one to do it in a non-traditional way [besides points, rebounds and assists, the others did it with blocked shots being the fourth category, but Alvin’s fourth category was steals – he did a 20-11-10-10]. He is one of only five Spurs to make an All-NBA team [Manu is the latest to join the club this year]. I’ve spoken with Alvin before and he is a really nice guy – it was sad to hear about his off-the-court problems.

Great work, FiCS.
You need a list for bandwagon 2003 fans. But other than that, it was a fun list. I only watched most of those guys play in NBA classic games, of which I’ve watched a number after getting interested in everything Spurs-related. But it’s hard to get a feeling of how popular/good they were from just a few games.

What about bandwagon 2001 fans? Can I be a bandwagon fan if I was living in LA and the Spurs were swept by the Lakers at the time?

Nice to meet ya, too! Please send me an e-mail (ficsing@seznam.cz), I don’t wanna bother other Spurs fans here with my how-did-I-become-a-Spurs-fan story:) Hey LatinD, if I ever make a list for bandwagon 2003, I gotta include my dad. no way, lol.

I really appreciated Terry Porter as a backup PG (sometimes starter). If only we could find another guy like that to backup Tony. I think Pop has been searching for a veteran backup point guard like him for a long time, leading to the Van Exel and Stoudamire signings.

Backup PG
We were joking at work the other day that Pop might look to get Chris Paul on the roster to back up Tony in 2018.

I’m really sad to see that David Cook didn’t make the list. Or Kevin Restani and Edgar Jones.

Sean Elliot
Growing up, Ninja was my favorite Spur. David Robinson was the reason I became a Spurs fan when I was 8 years old, but everybody liked Robinson the best, so I had to choose someone else. I picked Elliot for the Taco Cabana commercials as much as for anything.
Really though, I loved the fact that he was our primary offensive weapon on the perimeter and he also guarded the opponents best player (Jordan, Drexler, Reggie Miller, Joe Dumars, etc all of whom I hated). The Memorial Day Miracle is still one of the top 2 or 3 sports watching moments of my life.
My All Star Team
PF-Tim Duncan (c 2003)
C- David Robinson (c 1995 )
SF-George Gervin (c 1979)
SG-Manu Ginobili (2005)
PG- Av . . . just kidding Tony Parker (2008)
Honorable Mention
Sean Elliot
Artis Gilmore
James Silas
