Round 2, Game 4: vs New Orleans
In 2002, there was a great movie released called Bubba Ho-tep. Most of you guys have probably never heard of it. I'm telling you RIGHT NOW that you should watch it. The movie is just brilliant. It's about two guys in a retirement home in East Texas that is being stalked by a chaps wearing mummy. One of the guys is an Elvis impersonator who now thinks he is Elvis, the other is a black man who thinks he is JFK. What does Bubba Ho-tep have to do with the Spurs? Nothing. This is about US, the PtR family. We, like the old men, are being attacked by an Undead enemy --blog trolls-- who attempts to slap his lips on our assholes to suck our souls. We need to band together, be diligent, and watch our assholes until this antagonist has been vanquished.
In the meantime, bone up on your game day rituals and routines. LatinD wants to know what they are and how much you are willing to bring to the Mojo table.

I don’t want to make any predictions on the series because I’m that worried of jinxing them.

Come on Tony, show a little attitude
The last game I get angry looking at Tony laughing and making jokes with Chris Flop 3
I’m not sayig: “go and break the bastard face”, but at least show some focus, some competitiveness.
I never see other spur making jokes to rivals…
I think Tony did get pissed the other night when Paul took a dive along the sideline to draw a foul. Tony and Paul were talking and you could tell (at least I’m saying I could tell) that Tony was frustrated with him. That’s good as far as I’m concerned.

Manu's victims
in game 3 included Mo Peterson, Bonzi Wells, Jannero Pargo and Julian Wright. Who else will he torch in game 4?
Your forgot CP3. Paul guarded Manu for like 2 possessions and Manu posted him up each time. One led to a wide open 3 for Bowen and the other Manu badly missed a bank shot. I think Byron realized it wasn’t a favorable match up though and he took Paul off him quickly.

NBATV will broadcast the game, so no NBA League Pass feeds for this one – and there probably won’t be any for the rest of the playoffs. However, one of the WMOE channels (probably WMOE 1) will show the game. To watch these channels you need:
1. Internet Explorer
2. Sopcast
To tune into it: enter the STOOGETV site, go with your mouse to the WMOE button on the left-hand menu, and then click on the channel you want.
If that doesn’t work, check the links below:
Since a couple of months ago, I assumed Manu would get back into the starting lineup at some point in the playoffs. When the chips are down, even the conservative Spurs know their top guys need to be in the game as much as possible.
i had been suggesting manu’s return to the starting five pretty much the whole time – and it was not very popular among the PtR crowd. i suppose that one could make the argument that now is the time for him to expend the energy he had been saving all year. either way, here’s oping that the extra day of rest is helpful for the healing process.
Lets get them thinking...
Spurs 102
Chris Pauls 95
Bruce Campbell is a God (he’s the guy who plays the Elvis impersonator in Ho-tep). I also recommend Campbell in the Evil Dead movies (directed by Spiderman director Sam Raimi before he blew up). If you haven’t seen them, they’re great low-budget horror films that are genuinely scary and hilarious. I recommend.
Allez Spurs!
What happened to you Chuck? You used to be with us man.
This playoffs has been an odd switch, Chuck’s picking against us and Kenny has been talking the Spurs up at every opportunity.
Defense. I want to see some defense in the first quarter. And rebounding.

we are playing well enough i think, but nooch hasnt been real good. at all yet they are only -2. those two treys by pargo is keeping them close.
I dont think he’s in the doghouse, there’s just no one for him to guard…all their guards can score: Paul, Pargo, Wells, Peja

C-Flop is very physical, especially against Parker. In the playoffs you’ll benefit from that more than pay for it. He’d probably have been called for at least 2 offensive fouls - this last play, maybe, and the one on the baseline where he clocked Tony in the mouth - if this were a regular season game.

When I heard that Duncan has had the flu the last week it explained a lot of his troubles in the first few games. Most people think the flu is a stomach ailment. In fact, it usually involves the upper and sometimes lower respiratory system and, in addition, can give a high fever. I don’t know if any of you have tried to play any sport with a fever and probably some airway inflammation but it goes a long way toward excusing his performance. I think everyone on New Orleans better get used to the healthy Tim. I am not watching the game or following the blog but I gather he has shown a “slight” improvement.
It is very encouraging to think that what we had in games one and two in New Orleans was a sick Tim. I like our chances going back there. Tim has looked FREAKING AWESOME tonight cleaning the glass and challenging shots.

Great things about game 4:
- Scrappy Doo had only 5 assists and 4 TOs.
- Oberto got inside West’s stupid brain.
- Finley came out shooting and made some great long jumpers.
- Ime played with heart. Great show.
- They stopped doubling Duncan. How stupid is that?
- Duncan seems to have figured Chandler out to some extent.
- Stojakovic who?
just sayin'

another huge win for you guys. we simply were outclassed tonight.
imo, if peja is going to be a non-factor on offense, you might as well julian wright in there.
i wont be able to sleep until game 5. now i know how you guys felt after games 1 and 2.
Thanks for your classiness, rmcc. You guys are tough. It’s definately been a great series to watch, that’s for sure. In all seriousness, you weren’t hitting anything tonight. Could have been our D, could have been just an off night; but I’m not counting on the misses being so frequent on Tuesday. Thanks for coming by…
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions
no problem. im glad i was able to show i have class. when i first posted on this blog in game 1 everyone was labeling me a bitch, shit talker, etc. i guess that’s expected. i would probably jump to that conclusion if a spurs fan came to a hornets blog if the roles were reversed.
man, pop is a genius. he’s going to let paul get his 25/10 and man up on peja and peterson and make them beat you. i’d go w/ pargo more then peterson and play more wright.
i don’t know why we aren’t moving pargo to parker and paul over to bowen. sure, bowen is taller, but i’d rather have bowen posting up than on the perimeter. paul is getting tired chasing parker around all the time. if not, go to some type of zone. it’s apparent the biggest problem we (hornets) have is stopping parkers penetration.
True, I’ve been concerned about BScott switching to Bowen as well, but all that does is draw Paul completely away from the paint, where he’s been camped going for steals. Bowen would simply park in the corners and pull Paul away. Don’t know how well that would work for you guys, but it certainly would save Paul some energy.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions
i think saving pauls energy would be the main thing at this point in time. parker is going to get his numbers no matter who you put on him. might as well let paul rest on the defensive end jump into the lanes from time to time. paul isn’t a great one on one defender. he is great at playing the lanes.
We won’t post up Bowen. I KNOW that. We don’t even post him up when Nash is on him.
I’ll also say that we are seeing the real greatness, yes greatness, of Tony Parker that he’s good enough to chase Paul on defense and abuse him on the other end. Whenever Pargo is in, at least it seems to me, that they have Pargo on Tony.
Tony did the same thing against the Suns with Nash. Tony WORKS on the defensive end.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions
I’m not saying Pop would post Bruce in that case; just that it would be ineffective and possibly even counter productive for NO because it would completely take away a defensive threat to our drives in Paul.

i dont blame him. i was watching the game over at a friends house and left with a couple minutes left n the 3rd quarter. im not even on the team and i was that pissed.
Hey, remember how in game 1 when you came over here and said we were the only ones bitching. (I know you do because you posted it above). Mostly, that was me about the refs. If I was watching tonight’s game as a Hornets fan I would have been bitching about the refs tonight. We got all the calls. But, like you guys in games 1 and 2, we deserved them. We played much more aggressively than you guys. Tonight, Tim got the “stud” calls.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions
what is your guys opinion of julian wright? generally if the opponent doesn’t want to see more of him then it’s probably better to get him more time.
He’s a great young talent, but tonight he had some wide open 3’s he was just to afraid to take.
by One4theThumb on May 11, 2008 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions
good question. As always, I’ve got an opinion. In the first two games he did a great job of playing within the system and making plays. He hit spot up 3’s. He crashed the boards. Etc. Tonight, he tried to do things he’s not as good at. The Spurs will attempt, I stress attempt, to have him do things he’s not used to and put pressure on him. He didn’t play with confidence tonight and it killed them. I think he seems a little too raw in his knowledge of the game to be playing more than 15 minutes a game.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions
I may be delusional from the win, but I still don’t see a difficult formula for beating these guys. I hope watching the game tonight, that we’ve figured this out and will continue to pound it. Pop has seemed a little slow to get this, but I’m hoping now that he’s caught on.
1.) Rough their bigs. Exploit their ability to get into foul trouble, and eliminate high percentage dunks and alleys.
2.) Allow Chris Paul to be a scorer, but not a distributer. Keeping Shaggy under 10 assists per game eliminates getting their offense flowing.
3.) Eliminate their perimeter shooters through tight man defense and contesting all shots.
4.) Go UNDER the screens as Shaggy rolls, and rotate defensive help.
5.) MAKE YOUR JUMPERS WHEN THEY CROWD THE PAINT OR DOUBLE TIMMY.
6.) Continue to demoralize and get into their heads. With such a young and inexperienced team, the psychological game (i.e.- Bruce and Fab) is critical.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:13 PM CDT reply actions
All those things and
7.) actually coming out to play in the 3rd quarter
Sure we’re probably over-simplfying, but that’s easy to do after a blowout win.
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
YES!! #7 has been really important. And I really don’t think we’re oversimplifying. I think it’s the exact way to counter this team, and it’s very similar to how we’ve been forced to play phx before Nash became a fossil last off-season. If we would simply do these 7 things, for 48 minutes, we’ll run the table. I still have confidence (or delusion) in that.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions
those changes have made the difference so far. now its scott’s time to play his hand. we’ll see how he adjusts.
But I’m curious, how does BScott counter THOSE changes? What can he do if those are executed effectively? I still struggle to see how we can’t run the table with you guys if will simply stick to that mantra.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions
one will figure itself out and that is you guys won’t shoot 60% every night out. this will keep our offense from playing in comeback mode the entire game. if you do shoot 60%, you deserve to win the series.
-more julian wright
-give more PT to wright, pargo and wells and less to peja and peterson. use those 3 players to D up on parkers and foul when necessary.
-its obvious peja isn’t going to get his shots off against bowen, so play one of the 3 players above on ginobli. i’d prefer to see wright in there more. when he’ s in there, things happen
-paul didn’t force the action into the paint nearly as much tonight as he has all year. he needs to get back to that. there were at least 4 times chandler was open for the alley-oop and he missed it.
-use a zone d if needed
-finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY….PUSH THE BALL. no one is going to be the spurs in a half court game. the hornets live and die by playing “controlled playground ball”. we need to get back to forcing the ball up and down the court.
But I’m curious, how does BScott counter THOSE changes? What can he do if those are executed effectively? I still struggle to see how we can’t run the table with you guys if will simply stick to that mantra.

I’d say the Hornets need to do three things:
1) Have West make his jumper
2) Have Paul make his jumper
3) Play some defense
The first two may create some room for their offense. The third may get them some easy baskets.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:20 PM CDT reply actions
Okay….okay. West’s jumper IS critical, which is likely hurt by #6. Paul’s jumper is a complete non-threat to me. I have no problem with him finishing with 40 points, so long as he has
What else? Where else do you turn if you’re NO? Am I wrong in seeing that as long as we stick to that formula, the only one’s that will beat San Antonio are San Antonio?
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions
the other thing to consider is rebounding. in the first two games, they got a TON of offensive boards. they played that card for long stretches of game 3 too. in game 4, the spurs shut off the valve entirely. this was the biggest difference in game 4 vs. the rest of the series and a good omen moving forward.
it would defintely behoove the spurs to limit second chances in games 5. their shooters have a knack for getting open on the kick-out.
if i’m byron scott, i sell out for the offensive boards in game 5. that would cure a lot of ills. and dont forget that the momentum in a series can flip back to them just as quick as it flipped for us. i also run the offense to bonzi wells a little more. he’s strong on the block and a tough match-up for the spurs. he hasnt been much of a factor yet. but if bowen matches up on stoyko again, then NOOCH will have to look in a different direction for a side-kick to paul.
One other thing you need to add to your list SiMA is health. We need to stay healthy. Speaking of which, Manu looked a little better tonight, except for that missed dunk.

Out of curiousity
Since I didn’t listen to the announcers (or the halftime from Kenny and Chuck) how much, if any, did they discuss Timmy’s flu during the NO games and how that could have affected his play?
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
i heard about him being sick only after game 1. if it was covered nationally, i didn’t hear it. i don’t doubt he was sick, but the hornets did a great job of taking him out of his game as well.
Definately. Though he was near death (yeah, I know), you guys DID do a great job in 1 and 2 doubling and cutting off passing lanes to limit him. I was honestly impressed.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Heard either Marv or Seger discuss how Timmy was unwilling to make excuses even though he was so sick in the first 2 games. Was really surprised to hear it, and glad that it went on the record. Chuck’s seemingly turned on us, but Kenny is still pretty impartial and calling it as we are as well.
I want to mute things too and struggle so much with that (Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Reggie Miller), but I so love hearing the crowd noise at home that I usually leave it on. Game 4 and I’ll be all silent though.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions
are you kidding me? why would you want to mess with your game time ritual like that? You could jimx the whole thing if you mute the sound. Suck it up and leave the sound on… suffer with the rest of us. Maybe we’ll be lucky and get VanGundy… he kinda likes us.
I am happy. I am proud. - Manu Ginobili
GOOD CALL!! Totally didn’t even consider the mojo of tinkering with the volume for Game 5! Thanks for the heads up Bella; it’ll stay on “32,” where it normally sits for our games…. and we will win.

whats the overall impression of the hornets before the series started compared to now? has it changed? to people think we are a one trick pony? just curious..
No opinion here. I don’t think I had watched them play a game this year before this series.

Mostly West
I’ll tell you that before the series began, I said that I wasn’t worried about anyone besides Paul. From what I’d seen of West, I thought he was a lot more dependant on Paul for his scoring than he actually is. After G1 felt as though I’d under-rated him. He’s a really good player and I’m curious to see how he plays the rest of this series—as well as how he matures over the next couple of years.
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
in louisiana we call david west the ‘17 foot assassin’. there are games where it seems like he never misses.
if the hornets were a video game, adding chris paul to the team would give every player on the team an extra few skills points. it’s no coincidence chandler, peja, peterson, etc.. all re-vived their careers in NO.
Gotta be straight with you, I still see NO as a one-hit wonder. I’m still laughing at comparing them when GS was still around to the Proclaimers and Lee Greenwood.
But I DO have a lot more respect for you guys after seeing you in this series. I didn’t pay attention to the RS because…..well, it’s a practice for us and I don’t follow many other teams. First round I ignored because I anticipated you to glide through dallas like sour cream (which is the parallel most perfect for the mavs now). Your running game and CP3’s overall play has been impressive. With more maturity and experience (and assuming you keep the character/attitudes in check), you guys will be a powerhouse for awhile.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Wait…. did I just COMPLETELY contradict myself in that post?! :)
I didn’t respect you coming in.
I have healthy fear and respect for you now.
I think you have the potential to be a powerhouse and a threat over the next few years.
I’m leaning towards ‘one-trick-pony’ until I see more. Plus, I’m really hoping for o-t-p.

familiarity breeds contempt. when you see a team and battle with them over a long series, you are bound to find some things to hate. i have a long list of them on the hornets, as do a lot of folks on here. i am also sure that there are many of the same feelings on the other side. i still hate richard jefferson from watching him in 6 games back in 2003….but anyway…...
there is no question but that the hornets are a more formidable foe than phoenix. however, i originally picked the spurs in 6 because of the hornets lack of experience. you knew paul was gonna be there – and i had just taken it for granted that bowen was gonna lock up peja for the whole series. i didnt see pop trying to waste bowen for 2 striaght games. this has made a big difference.
i was very surprised at the hornets rebounding. they really took it to us on the glass for the better part of 3 games. they are very difficult to deal with when they rebound like that.
the rise of david west has been the X factor for new orleans if you ask me. i might be the only regular on here to like the guy. i followed his college career very closely and he’s class all the way if you ask me, even if it doesnt come out on some occasions during the play-offs. not many keep their composure all the time and fab-o can bug the hell out of someone too. he’ll learn nore about this with more experience – i will bet anyone on that. west raising his game has created one more scoring option for them, which was really what they needed. i would like to see them run more offense to mo pete and bonzi wells…..uh, like, they can do that next year.
the big things that scare me about the hornets is their youth and attitude. they have the skills and they believe in themselves. the spurs did beat phoenix in 5, but those were a tough 5 and how many lumps can the old guys take you know? lots of guys got good rest in game 4 and hopefully that will help in game 5 – but pardon the pun, the spurs will be walking into a hornets nest over there. they have done it before, but it wont be an upset either way in my opinion.
the good news is that we have all seen them get thru some very tough situations in places all over the west like LA, phoenix, denver, dallas, etc.
i dont know the hornets contract situation very well, but i think the make up of their team from one year to the next will go a long way to determining their status as one trick pony or not. they can be hard to beat for a long time with paul and west, particulalry if they can trade out chandler for a big man with more of a scoring presence inside.
I’m going to cut you some slack for all the man-love for West.
If you are looking for contract status for any team or player, this is the site:
http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-player-salaries/team/Spurs/
The good news for the Hornets is that they have their starting 5 locked up. Peja, Mo Pete, and Tyson are signed through 10-11, West through 11-12.
The bad news is that Peja is signed through10-11 at 13 mil/yr and they still have to sign Paul to an extension. They will be jammed up against the cap or over in 2010. It’s a good problem for them to have.
Trading out Chandler for a big man with a scoring presence? It’s a nice thought, but big men who can score are pretty rare. Chandler is a great piece as a defensive center. Hell, we’d take him instead of Fab I would think, but maybe not at the 12mil/yr he’s getting.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 12, 2008 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions
i appreciate the slack. fwiw, i didnt like him at all last week and i promise to feel the same way for all of this week as well.
looks like have some big bucks sunk into a couple of people. those numbers make me think they will be looking to make a major move somewhere along the line. i was never super enamored with tyson chandler, but he is who he is – a lit of money for him though.
Here’s a fun stat tonight from Game 4. The Spurs shot 8-26 from downtown. Some of that was late, but not all of it. Bruce was 1-7 and Manu 2-7. There are things we can do better than we did tonight. And I think we have been getting a LOT of open looks from downtown.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:31 PM CDT reply actions
we’ve been getting a TON of looks—but we really haven’t been able to hit them and get the “stud” calls on the same night
NOOCH will have a really tough time of it if those two ever combine
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
Ditto
.....and…...a…...golfclap. We get these pieces all working together, and tonight’s 20 point win won’t be a “blowout.”
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions
I’d even take having the game called evenly (which, honestly, is always my preference) and having our 3’s fall at our RS average.
As far as your wondering about how we can be beaten if we follow the Seven Steps: when the refs aren’t making calls that grossly benefit one team or another, I feel the same way you do. I’m wondering if there’s a way for us to be beaten that I haven’t though of.
Actually, it's more of a guideline than a rule. - Dr. Peter Venkman
And I truly don’t feel that it’s overconfidence at all. I just don’t see us being beaten following that system if we don’t then beat ourselves. Even with the calls going against us, I think we’re used to that enough that IT may not even turn the tide. I hope I’m right, I really do. But factoring in our coaching/experience/maturity/poise advantage, I’m very confident right now. The guys are versed enough to not rest on this though, and I think they’ll come out with fire in Game 5. That happens and we win in NO, I see them crumbling completely in Game 6. This is one of those times I’m thankful to have the veterans and the experience; to keep us focused and honed for Tuesday.

“And I think we have been getting a LOT of open looks from downtown.”
which is why peja and peterson need to get on the bench and wells, wright and pargo need to get more time. peja is in there to shoot 3’s. if that is shut down, there is no reason to have him in there.
I know I’m a homer and looking through overly optimistic glasses tonight, but I still see your biggest hopes for closing this series relying solely on a San Antonio collapse (completely ignoring the above list and playing without passion or fire) or additional influence from the zebras. I don’t feel you’re beating us straight up. Could and might happen though, we’ll see.

Okay, ATS. Here it is. What is your feeling for the series now? Predictions? Anticipated chain of events?
The girlfriend asked me to pick before tonight (she wisely consistantly trusts my pre-game analysis, unlike Pop) and I told her all bets were off. I told her I wasn’t anymore confident in Pop to make the adjustments needed to counter the first 2 games, and felt that he’d waited too long to impliment the changes he finally did in Game 3. I told her that it could go either way, and I was unwilling to lay money down because it was too tight to call.
That said, I feel us rolling now. Hope springs eternal, but I am confident that our list above will actually be firmly implimented and NO will have no answer. I can see us stealing Game 5 in NO, and closing out in 6 or 7. I feel differently than I did several nights ago because our guys are playing with passion now, and playing to win the series.
by SgtinManusArmy on May 11, 2008 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions
I think Game 5 will be a war. It will be physical, chippy, and tough. Both teams will be playing with desperation for the first time in the series. I favor us in any really tight game because of our experience. It will be important for New Orleans to not fall behind by more than 8-9 points.
I really like our chances for the series. I think we will win Game 5 by five points with it being a tie game with 2:00 to go. I think we then close them out in Game 6 with a good run to start the 4th quarter.
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on May 11, 2008 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions
Right with you on that line, I was thinking the same.
But I’ll go even further and guarantee that there will be a NO FF by the 4th on Tuesday. If not, a minimum of 2 TFs. My Bruce jersey is glowing like those special stones in IJ Temple of Doom (yeah, watched it today. Getting excited for the new one.) and it only glows when he’s begun to penetrate the delicate psyche of an opposing team.
