Playoff game thread #2 -- vs. Phoenix
I'm a simple man. Easy to please. How about we just kick their ass from the get-go this time. It's too early in the playoffs for my heart to handle another game like the first.
So, seriously, I'm supposed to believe that the only thing that has kept Stampler from live blogging (besides it being inconvenient to drive to his mom's) was not having a 25' cable. Really? Come on Stampizzle. I wouldn't mock a man for not having wireless, but not being able to get yourself a 25' cable, that's just pathetic.
Great recap Stampler, btw. You pretty much covered everything about everything. Thanks.

I feel that Manu is due for a hot shooting game.

You stole my jesus fish…
Manu will go off this game, most definately. Especially when Coach D’oh caves and tries to bring a double over to Timmy. We get them in foul trouble again, and this one is a blow out.

Get our foot on their gnarly necks this game
The Spurs must, must, MUST jump on phx fromt the get go this time around. We don’t need a letdown after an emotional victory a la dallas in ‘06.
Tony and Manu: ATTACK-a-snaq. Get this guy on his heels, and pronto. Make s.t.a.t try to play defense—we all know how that’ll end! And, Manu, we will be accepting donations of the 3-ball variety this game…....let ‘em fly, my man!
TIMMY: Just DO WHAT YOU DO! Abuse shaq in the low-post. Get amare in foul trouble. And pause for effect at the 3-point line every now and then, just to make Mikey nervous!
Bruce and Ime: I know you guys excel at defense, but unlike in previous years the Spurs can’t afford to wait until Rd. 2 to crank up the D to “championship” level. Bruce, let Nash know you’re there every time he thinks about driving. Ime, make ‘em think twice about trying that outside jumper.
Finley and Barry: Would it be too much to ask for a modicum of resistance to the offensive machine that is these desert dwellers? Fin, can’t dog you too much when that pull-up is working, but you’ve got to fall back on D if that thing goes cold. Same for you Barry—I know you’ve got range but we can’t affortd to get into a shooting contest with these guys. Play some D, and your 3 will become exponentially more effective. And make your freaking free throws, for crying out loud!
Oberto and Thomas: Keep bruising ‘em down low on D…...and a small contribution to the the Spurs’ Higher Point Totals Program would be greatly appreciated!
Vaughn: (Continue to) Watch and learn
Horry: You’ve got the best seat in the house! lol
GO SPURS GO!!! Beat The HELL Outta phx!! (again!)

Staying in the house to watch the game in case it ends up like the last game where I was alternately jumping around the house yelling and throwing things at my TV and yelling. Just don’t see myself being able to do that at the bar.
Really hoping for the Spurs boost in confidence from the last game combined with slight demoralization of the Suns and the return of Manu to his rightful place of greatness for a convincing win. But as the say you can wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up quicker.

Windex40- I actually did watch the last game at a bar and if I was not such good friends with the wait staff would have absolutely have been kicked out. Plus I was sitting next to a Suns fan, which started out awful and ended just fine.
I don’t make ever make point predictions, so I won’t screw with the mojo and start now. But I will say that I agree the Sickness is gonna have a big game.
My trip to Champaign is over, so, in the words of the Juggernaut (BITCH!), “I am back, let the rape party begin! Yeeeeeah!” Let’s do this thang.
Xavier: Where are you taking me?
Sinister: To the one true enemy of the great Charles Xavier. Stairs.
Northstar: Suh..Sinister...?
Sinister: Careful, son...That's *Mister* Sinister to you!

i want to issue a caveat
i’m sure that this has crossed all our minds, but since no one has directly addressed this i wanted to. I could be so wrong but i think the Suns are going to come out focused, driven, and prepared. I know that on some level game 1 was demoralizing to them but they are going to do everything they can to not show it. I’m expecting our guys to be a lot more focused in this game than the first half of last game and for the Spurs’ defensive intensity, effort, and execution to be much better. But I just have a feeling that no matter how tight our defense will be the Suns’ will be that much better offensively. I just think they are going to come out firing on all cylinders and that they are going to be monstrous on the offensive end, trying to push the tempo and they may just succeed for a while at that. I think we are in for another game 1 in the sense of not because Timmy was the only one that showed up for a while but that the Suns will shoot lights out. If the Spurs can weather that type of intensity by the Suns then i think that our defense will eventually wear them down like it does to everyone and another clutch performance by the Sickness then we will be 2-0.
Anyways all that crap to say it will be close
Spurs 96
Suns 91
has anyone else noticed that Henry Abbot from TrueHoop really wants the Suns to win and really seems to not like the Spurs in general?
i think you are right on top of it on the suns. you could sense a little bit of “exasperation” from them as little stevie nash mentioned post-game, but you can bet that they will be coming out with guns blazing. i will be surprised if it is anything less.
Spurs will need their best effort to stem the tide and get them bogged down late in the game. My prediction is that this game’s outcome will be laregly known by mid-4th at the latest. Here’s hoping our guys come out with the same fire – and we have all seen them do it, so that gives us confidence.
did anyone notice Timmy getting in guys’ grills in the time out right before the end of the game – it appears that he was telling everyone to get one last stop. If he’s that fiored up about this series already, it bodes well for the Spurs chances.
i see what ya’ll are referencing, but i think abbott has relatively upfront and honest about where he’s coming from. he’d like to see the suns advance, but he’s written very positively about the spurs.
gospursgo. hook 'em. metal rules. ganja rules.
yeah, especially Timmy. I don’t mind Abbott at all because he’s fair. He likes the Suns more, but he respects the Spurs and what they’ve done. Also, he recognized that the Suns didn’t deserve to win game 4 last year.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-24-65/Phoenix-Got-the-Calls.html
Anyone else agree?
We all know that Phoenix is going to come out hyped up and determined to avenge game 1. Personally, I would love for us to come out and deliberately slow the game down to a halt. I’m talking about walking the ball up the court, cycling the ball around, setting up our offense and waiting to find a good shot in the last 5 seconds of the shot clock. Then relying on our Defense to make the stops and hold these guys to under 90 pts. We need to keep them on the defensive as long as possible. This will keep their numbers down and allow more time for Snaq and Amare to get into foul trouble. Plus, they will find it extremely hard to get into a rhythm with the turtle paced tempo. I’m not sure how many of you guys have played ball, but it is incredibly frustrating when you play a team who constantly holds the ball. You get impatient, irritated and you make stupid mistakes. Let’s be boring!
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
If the Spurs win tonight, Phoenix is done. If the Suns win, the Spurs still have the advantage (even without homecourt). Nash and D’Antoni know that and they are going to ensure that the Suns give a hell of a fight tonight.
I expect Shaq’s continued whining about game 1’s officiating (with no counters from the cowardly national media) will indeed have an effect. I expect the refs are going to let him get away with murder tonight (more murder than in game 1). He will travel and charge his way to some easy buckets, and I he will get away with more “blocks” like the one he perpetrated on Manu’s head.
Honestly though, Shaq is just not that good at this stage in his career. It is not bad for the Spurs to have him on the floor. He looked good in the regular season against the Spurs, but I am starting to think that Pop played D’Antoni and Shaq for fools. Did Pop just let Shaq have his best nights of the season so that he would be overconfident come playoff time? Does Pop want Shaq on the floor when Phoenix needs a key bucket? Absolutely.
I think that will be the gameplan Money. The Spurs have their most success on offense when they move the ball anyway. Really they just have to play ball, play Spurs ball and play with intelligence and energy. Their pick & roll D has to tighten up. The rotations were awful the other day, so hopefully that will be shored up. This is a must win for the Black & Silver, but I say that for every game.

please let us get a win
VWolf, I think you’re probably right, the whiners always tend to have calls go their way at least early on in the game. I want our guys to ignore it and play thru it. I think we can take this game if we don’t lose our focus. And in the playoffs, the Spurs are better than most at not losing their focus. So, I’m hoping…

(Sort of) Interesting facts:

► Previous games: They have met 4 times this season.
→ Dic/17/07 - PHX 100 | SA 95 - SA.
→ Jan/31/08 - SA 84 | PHX 81 - Phoenix.
→ Mar/9/08 - PHX 94 | SA 87 - Phoenix. => With Shaq
→ Apr/9/07 - PHX 96 | SA 79 - SA. => With Shaq
► The Spurs shot 38% FG in the first half last Saturday. In the second half, however, they shot 58% from the field, including 5 triples, and won the rebounds battle 25-18.
► The Spurs’s Big Three (Duncan+Parker+Ginóbili) made 90 of the 117 points, which would be 77% of the points. Not only that, but they also dished out 15 out of the 15 assists the Spurs had in the entire game.
► Manu comes from 5 consecutive games without making a 3 pointer, adding a sorry 0/16. The last 3 pointer he made was on April 1st against the GS Warriors.
► Parker, who hit his head badly in the first quarter of the game, said he was feeling “just fine” on Monday afternoon.
► Grant Hill, who’s recovering from a groin injury, said he would be 100% healthy by today. He has been removed from the starting lineup, though.
► The Suns have the best 3pt percentage in the league with 39.3% and the 3rd best percentage from the FT line with 78.3%. Los Suns also lead in assists with 26.68 per game.
► For my fellow Manu homers, here are his numbers against the Suns:

(Likely) Starting lineup:

______________
Quotes alter the 1-0:
► Duncan:
→ “I don’t believe there’s going to be a whole lot of 3-point shooting [from me]. I’m happy that that one went down but I’m not going to rest anything on that.”
→ “We won in double overtime on our home court, so we’re not too confident.”
→ “After 51 minutes I need about four days off but it’s great that we’re not just playing on one day’s rest.”
► Pop:
→ “We were fortunate in the first game. That’s gone and now it’s Game 2.”
► Mike D’Antoni:
→ “Every game is an adventure in itself.”

Not even close to being worried yet. They’re not going to keep shooting this well, we’re heating up, and they’ll start getting in foul trouble soon. We played a B- to their A+, and we’re only down 7 at half. 49% to their 61%, and I’m feeling good. If we would simply make a more diligent effort to get them in foul trouble and start driving the lane instead of settling for 15 foot jumpers (I’m looking your way, KT and Bert), this will be a good second half.
Someone has got to get going offensively and we have to play better D on the blocks – namely the PnR with Amare and pre-entry pass with Shaq.
The looks those guys are getting are absurd. It's why they're shooting 67% and if we don't slow them down near the rim then, yes, then the shooting percentage will continue.
Allez Spurs!

I finished my crap at nine, plus the game started a little late. It wasn’t really a matter of not resisting… sorry to disappoint.
On the contrary, I’m convinced that you are the missing link, the mojo that completes my pregame meal, special shirt, banner hung from the dresser, and Timmy jersey on the couch. Any doubts or fears of the second half are now completely gone with your arrival. However, if we go down by 25, well I’m not even going to finish that sentence…

Duncan needs to face Shaq up 12-15’ from the basket. Posting him up is just playing to his strength.
But it goes well for us! When Timmy posts up deeper, he does silly things!
Also, aren’t you working?
How do you push a guy out to 12-15’ from the block when he weighs 678lbs and you know the officials are desperate for contact?
by SgtinManusArmy on Apr 22, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions
My patience with Bruce is at it’s end. Teams like phx are too good at exploiting the fact that he represents NO offensive threat whatsoever, even directly under the basket and uncovered. Bowen rotates on amare though, and I’m suddenly scared of the hoser.

by SgtinManusArmy on Apr 22, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions
It might convince the Suns to try and force it in to Amare on the post… which isn’t their offense really. It’s a gamble, but could the results be any worse?
Touche. We’ll see. It would at the least inspire a whole new round of hatred for Bruce within phx, which I welcome.

Ok, heading into the second half, i have no fear. They shot 61% and we had 3 points not from the big 3. We’re going to win or this will be our worst performance ever.

what a 3rd to take the game over – sparked by everyone’s new fave – mike finley. shame on all of you who spent the year busting his chops. it was almost like pop knew that he needed one of the role players to get going and kept calling fin’s number
again, lets see these fuckers try to beat us 4 outta 5.
good call Bones but just for goos measure can you cal the findog the only way you know how?
If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
Yeah
what he said. I’m proud to say that I have been PRO FinDog all year. I’m not a bandwagoner like some.

amare finds his butthole in the second half
first half, I was shitting myself, except that my hero Manu was playing possessed…
thid quarter ten minutes of suffocating D, Amare and Nash managed to choke each other dicks, and Spurs get Findog, Udoka and Oberto to show some offensive love…
fourth quarter, some Spurs offensive lapses but Tony’s jumpers and Manu’s SICKNESS pass to duncan to clinch it….
Shaq is crying himself to bed tonight inside a cookie jar.
A Dramatic Reenactment
Person A: Hey, was there a basketball game on tonight?
Kid Dynamite: Why yes there was.
Person A: What happened?
Kid Dynamite: The Spurs bitch slapped the Albuquerque flame-outs.
Person A: That’s great. You’re a big Spurs fan right? Are you excited?
Kid Dynamite: I am so FUCKING EXCITED!
Person A: I know you’re not gay, but if you were gonna make love to one guy on this planet who would it be?
Kid Dynamite: MANU MOTHERFUCKING GINOBILI!

Um that was fun...
I saw Montreal win a game 7 last night and the Sharks win a game 7 tonight and the Spurs are up 2-0 on the bitchass Suns. It is so awesome to be me right now.
Of course, come Saturday the Eagles will ruin EVERYTHING with their stupid draft picks.
You can expect a recap, ON PtR no less, (yay no link!) Thursdayish.
As for the nickname glossary… I dunno. Ask Matthew. He’s Mr. Technowizard. I just write, dog.
P.S.
Quick recap preview…
The three stars will once again be the big three, in some revised order. Sorry in advance if I ruined the surprise for everybody.
Man, the regular season is the same thing as playoffs!! (NASH)
“We had beaten them [two] straight times, now they’ve beaten us twice; it just happens to be in the playoffs,” Nash said. “We’re just going to have to play really well at home and get back on a streak.”
Especially since...
out of past 10 times we’ve been up 2-0. 5 times we’ve returned home 2-2. I find it really hard pressed to win game 3 with their backs against the wall. I think game 4 will determine the series.

Man that defense was stifling in the 2nd half. I loved it!!! Now the Black & Silver crew has to get one in Phoenix.

I wish I could take credit...

Recap
I wrote a little recap over at 48minutesofhell.blogspot.com if anybody wants to check it out. great game last night guys, I am really proud.
I couldn't disagree more...
about this statement on Hack-a-Shaq.
“Its legal, but its chicken shit. I don’t mind when we play physical ball (or “dirty” for people who think that basketball shouldn’t be a man’s game). But let’s at least play. It disrespects the game, disrespects the Suns, and disrespects ourselves.”
Hear me out. It’s strategy. And like all strategy, sometimes it works (game 1) and sometimes it doesn’t (game 2). The Hack-a-Shaq has been around for years…..10 years. The NBA competition committee has taken a long and hard look at the Hack-a-Shaq and still haven’t outlawed it. The reason they have not made a rule change is because the team employing the HaS (Hack-a-Shaq) is deliberately taking their defense out of the equation and offering up 2 uncontested shots. It is Shaq’s and everyone else’s responsibility to be able to make free throws. If you can’t…then that’s your problem. But you are being given 2 uncontested shots from the stripe with the clock stopped. Also, this puts the team in foul trouble, so any non-shooting/away from the ball foul for any player will result in free throws.
To say that the HaS strategy disrespects the game and is chicken shit, is like saying the same thing for the intentional walk in baseball. Is it chicken shit that pitchers won’t pitch to Barry Bonds? No, it’s strategy. Also, is it chicken shit to foul a team in the last seconds of the game when they are down by 3, so they will be forced to shoot only 2 free throws? No, It’s strategy. In football, with 1 min left in the game and the opposing team up 1 point, is it chicken shit for the D to let the offense score a TD and be down 8pts but then give their offense a chance to comeback and tie it up with a TD and 2pt conversion? No… It’s strategy.

CMoney,
I think you make some really good points. And I would be against the idea of outlawing it. And to be honest the language “chicken shit” is probably unnecessarily incendiary. Much of my issue with what we did last night had to do with when we were doing it, not what we were doing. I would also compare it to the idea of fouling a guy when you’re up by 3 instead of letting them take the shot to tie (as far as strategic uses of the foul goes). I just think that doing it so egregiously right in the middle of the 3rd shows an unnecessary timidity. We need not fear their offense. Those other instances necessitate treating the game like a chess match, and there is the implicit agreement that at the end of the game the full oeuvre of possible tactics can be employed. Doing it in the middle of the third may be strategy, but its a strategy that subverts the nature of the game. Maybe what I’m trying to make is some very tenuous appeal to honor or something like that. I just thought that the combination of its ineffectiveness and unnecessariness made it a disappointing strategy to employ in the 3rd. A lot of people criticize us for being "dirty", which as I said in my post I think is just a bunch of bullshit. We play a physical, playoff style game. A man’s game. And I like it. And subsequently I don’t mind if our long list of victims, squirming for a reason why they got beat, call us "dirty". But I would never want to be known as timid.

Yeah I can respect that. I thought the timing of the HaS was off too. But apart of me thinks that Pop wanted to execute the HaS regardless if Shaq missed his free throws. It was obvious the Suns were in a funk, and I think he was trying to keep them out of sync. With the defensive intensity raised and the constant stoppage, it caught Phx off guard and prevented them from getting things back on track. The last thing he wanted was for the Suns to find their shooting stroke again. At the very least, it shows me that Pop is always thinking of ways to gain an edge and stay one step ahead of the opponent. But I can definitely see your point.

Outlaw it? Sort of
i’d be for changing the foul/free throw rules in the nba. make it so that a team can decline the penalty if they want, retain possession and continue. it cuts out the hack-a-shaq (or hack-a-bowen), and forty fouls in the last thirty seconds. maybe keep the shot clock the same for declines so sometimes the fouled team can’t decline it (or lose the ball because the shot clock expires).
upside? cuts down on intentional fouls in the game.
downside? cuts down on comebacks, greatly reduces the number of tools the team behind has.

Good post KD!!! A split is paramount for the crew. Got to split. I don’t know if they will win Friday, and coming back 2-2 wouldn’t be the end of the world, but getting a dub in Phoenix would be spirit crushing.

Good port again, KD, really. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
I agree with both you and CMoney regarding HaS: it’s a valid strategy, since FT shooting is as much a part of basketball as anything else. Doing it on any player with a plus 65 FT% would be ludicrous, and that should really be a minimum standard for NBA players.
That said, the timing was definitely off. I wish Pop had waited till the Suns made at least one or two baskets in a row, and gained some momentum. As it was, they only had I believe 2 points in the quarter, and the engineer in me says that 7 is a 250% improvement in their situation.
Thusly, HaS made the Suns 2 and a half times better than they were. Math Hath Spokenth.
