Rivalry?
What constitutes a real "rivalry"? To be considered a rival, you should at least have won a NBA Championship. Or maybe even a Conference Championship i.e. Dallas Mavericks. But then again, when you pull off two of the biggest choke jobs in the history of modern sports, in consecutive years nonetheless, you and your fans lose all rights to talk trash. For eternity. I just don't understand how Dallas and Phoenix and even the media consider Spurs vs. ____ (insert your team name here) "rivalries". Please! Boston vs. L.A in the 80's, L.A. vs. Detroit in the late 80's early 90's, Chicago vs. no one in particular, Lakers vs. Spurs in the new millenium, now those were rivalries as both teams had already won championships. Phoenix can't even get past the conference finals! So what do you think? Am I right or am I right?
I understand how these teams and their fans hate, loathe and despise us, it's pure simple jealousy, no other way around it. They've never won jack chit, we have. They can call us a one horse town, but it's a big beautifully groomed horse, a Clydesdale if you will, while they are stuck riding around on their donkey, burro, jackass, all one in the same. And when I say hate, loathe, despise, I say it as the biggest understatement ever. I've lived in the DFW area. I've been to games in Phoenix. These people take hatred to a level I never thought existed!
But surely, I digest, we'll let the 4 rings speak for themselves. Sorry for the long post. It's late and I just had to let off some steam. The Spurs make me want to go to the casino and gamble all my money! First time post-er, long time viewer.

Re: Rivalry?
Does anyone think that the Wolves were a rival to the Spurs when they were posting decent records and regularly making the playoffs? Hell no!
A tip for Phoenix fans, whining about the Spurs does not make them your rival
Re: Rivalry?
You can always tell the posers by those begging all who will listen to consider them a rival and take them seriously. Notice that no one on the side of the actual winners are clamoring for a determined rivalry. Rivalries are for the losers or for the underdogs. Rivalries are not made on ESPN or by blowhard owners and coaches; rivalries are made by serious challenges and the swapping of wins over time.
In my opinion, rivalries are also completely voided when the struggling team chooses to go out and revamp their team or scheme, and add new stars instead of developing new stars (IE- giving up and trading for Kidd or shaq). This has always bothered me- If you cannot beat someone with what you have, and you choose willingly to go out and not add a 'piece' or role-player but instead add an all-star/franchise-type player; you've effectively already admitted defeat and voided any claims to a rivalry. True organic sport is building and developing players (Manu, Tony, etc.) instead of trading for a big name to achieve a quick fix. That school of success is owned by the yankees and red sox, and is shameful and hollow. I've always been proud (though it's mainly more because our owner is miserly and cheap) that we have never caved from our system and gone out and picked up a star player to guarantee victory. It's more rewarding to develop a system with key pieces on your own and defeat everyone else.

Re: Rivalry?
You know, we really shouldn't stoop to their level. Let them enjoy their regular season "championships" and we'll enjoy the real thing. We should actually pity them, since they have never, ever experienced the joy and euphoria of what it feels like to see your team be the last one standing. How sad. It must suck having to experience that every year, while we get to enjoy it every other year (no pun intended).
Re: Rivalry?
mavs were getting there, but they might be on the way out. we'll see. if they play the spurs in the playoffs and win three games, i'll let them stay in the discussion.
suns haven't done anything yet. they can 'share a rivalry' with mavs (they're 1-1 against eachother the past three seasons).
i used to hate the jazz and rockets. they just don't rise to that level anymore, but if they won three games in a series vs. the spurs, i'd have to start hating them again (a little).
