What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?

In the spirit of Sports Guy's comic book scenarios, I wonder what would have happened had Horry retired this most previous Summer.

Would this have created the available money and more pressing need to sign Scola?

Would Bonner have played any better, knowing that he would be getting BSB's minutes?  Would Bonner still be here because we had to keep Butler's contract?

(I realize this is a frustrating exercise, like beating one's head against a wall, aka 'pounding the rock'.)

You're killing me...I don't know if this is such a straith math..but according to http://hoopshype.com/salaries/houston.htm vs. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/san_antonio.htm Roho earns 700.000 more than Scola in Houston, so it would have been possible to avoid the luxury tax. , although his exit clause ($3 million according to http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2007/07/22/this_time_its_not_about_him/?page=3 -linked from Wikipedia) from Spain would've fallen on San Antonio.
So it might have been possible, I'm gonna cut my veins with a piece of paper (argggg)

I have a better question.
What if Horry had retired is outstanding question. I have a better question. WHY DIDN'T HE RETIRE???? He obviously was running on fumes last season and now he has nothing left in the tank at all. As a matter of a fact his gas gauge reads negative. It almost makes me hurt physically to watch him play now.

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
Because Horry is getting paid over 3 million dollars to ride the pine, and come in and do nothing for 10-15 minutes a game.

Would you walk away from that kind of money? Don't blame Horry, blame management and Pop for being stupid enough to bring him back; and blame Pop for even playing him when at least Bonner gives the effort and energy that the Spurs need!

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
Money is golden, for sure....but I'm with DennardC on this one. The Spurs were stupid to offer him that contract, but it's even stupider to continue playing him.

And your point is....
adam8065, of course I wouldn't walk away from that kind of money. This is more than just about the money. He said himself he basically was trying to hang on to piggyback one more championship, let's face it, for all the big shots he has hit, he is a piggybacker. And if you take a look at my comments from my other posts, you would know that I do blame Pop for playing him so Goddamn much. But Robert Horry does not escape blame, he is out there playing and he is out there stinking it up. Players are held accountable when they play like shit. Pop is coaching like shit to continually put him out there, but when Horry is out there he is a hindrance to the team's success. Really I am a fan of the dude's, I recall his days with Houston when he was a highflyer and it's just embarassing to see him play like this now. Surely he had to know he didn't have anything left in the tank when last season ended, but he might make me end up putting my feet in my mouth by playing better. I doubt it, but I will be watching.

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
Here's the question I asked awhile back though, and it's one I can't escape.  IF RoHo hits one game-winner in the playoffs, will all of this be worth it?  If he bails us out, Big Shot Bob-style and helps us advance even once, will his being a liability the later half of the season and a corpse the first part of the season be forgiven?

I am nearing the point at which I say no.  I've begun to wonder how his negative impact hurts us in the long run, and how even a brief positive impact in the future cannot erase the lingering possibility that if not for the negative impact, there might not be a need for a positive impact.  And for the record, in my opinion, RoHo's legacy is being tarnished here; but it's Pop's responsibility.  He's on the floor entirely too much when he should instead be in a gym somewhere practicing his shooting or posting up a lawn chair to polish his skills for the playoffs.  Pop is on the line for his inexplicable overplaying of RoHo.

Truthfully though, it's hard for me to hate on Rob too much when other than Spahn and Sain, there's no one playing worth a damn consistantly.  The list of our overplayed, fossilized former stars seems endless...

Yes.  We're good enough that one game could swing a series, and thus the playoffs.  I don't care about the regular season.  If he hits a game winner, I'll forgive all (unless he also costs us a playoff series, then I demand blood.)

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
What if, because of his ineptitude on... well, everything right now; we are IN a series that we didn't need to be in, and he hits a shot in that series?  IE- we're playing Dallas and he saves us a game, vs. playing GS because he didn't kill us in seeding going into the playoffs?  Team game, blah, blah, blah.  I realize it's all speculation, but I find myself thinking that if he wins game 4 vs. Phoenix or Dallas for us, I'll likely be happy but equally pissed that we're even in that series instead of playing GS or NO.  And I'll likely blame Grandpa Rob (actually, I'll blame Pop, then Rob, then Fin, then that President Almondjoy of Iran, then Dick Cheney, then Frenchie, then Eva).

Sorry, I know it's hypothetical, but I'm pretty sure I'm lit at this point.  And I find it funny that Rob's usefulness to me this year hinges COMPLETELY on him hitting a game-winner in the playoffs.  No pressure, Rob.

UPDATE- Good news!!
From the SA E-N:
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich admits he doesn't know if Horry, the grizzled 16-year veteran, has another spate of stretch-run heroics left in him. ... 'I'm not really sure where he's at physically,' Popovich said. 'He's definitely not in great shape, because he just hasn't played that much. Unless he's been stealing into the night at two in the morning to get on the treadmill, he hasn't been getting much work.'"

HE'S...DEFINATELY...NOT...IN...GREAT...SHAPE.  I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

true, but...
I'm not saying Rob is the only cat stinking it up, I'm just saying his play has been the most egregious and damn it I am sick of watching it. Pop needs to stop being so stubborn, and quit playing dude. I seriously doubt he will be any factor at all in the playoffs. I mean dude is shooting fucking shooting 30% for cripes sake!!!!

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
What if we hadn't given Scola to the Rockets for a bucket of popcorn and a half-eaten box of jujubees?

They would be in a world of hurt right now instead of riding out a 20 game win streak.

Regardless of dinosaur Horry's status, wouldn't Scola look a lot better playing for Tau Ceramica than for the Rockettes?  Couldn't we have just annointed him as a Spur in 08-09?

We also obviously picked the wrong year to give up on Udrih (I am sure this has been mentioned before).  Udrih's line as a starter with Excremento has been outstanding: 47.6 FG%, 41.5 TP%, 87.0 FT%, 3.7 boards, 5.3 assists, 1.1 steal, 14.8 points.

Clearly Udrih cannot handle being a sub, but when Tony went down, the Spurs would have lost a lot less games if Beno had remained in black and silver.

Scola
Yeah letting Scola go was pure lunacy. The dude obviously would have fit in well with the squad.

Re: What If...Horry Had Retired This Summer?
Then I would've set the world record for having the longest ongoing erection. Robert Horry is ruining my sex life. He's ED personified.
