Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain

A look at tonight's box score:

FGA -- 35
FGM -- 8
FG% -- 23%
Total minutes -- 144
REB -- 11
AST -- 7
TOs -- 7
FTA -- 2

Those are the totals for the Spurs not named Parker, Ginobili and Duncan.

At some point Michael Finley and Robert Horry will be too old to play NBA basketball, and there's no current evidence suggesting that point is in their futures.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
While I get it and it's clever, you'll probably have to explain that title to 80% of the PtR audience.

P.S. Chicken little indeed, Wayne.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Yeah I was part of the 80%, thank God for google though.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
while i'm old enough to have heard of this and know what it means, i am not old enough to know it from when it was happening.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Your previous "fuming" post is looking more prescient than ever at the moment.

At this point, if the Spurs make it past the second round I'll be shocked.  I'll be mildly surprised if they get out of the first round, with the Western Conference being what it is.

chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Haha. Nice title. Except for instead of rain, we should pray the rest of the Western Conference to implode.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Proud to be one of the 20%ers, but I like the "no current evidence suggesting that point is in their futures" comment.

Amen brother, amen.  I'm just glad that we've got Justin Bowen and Dermarr Johnson developing in Austin.

Fuck, it's raining.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
But Finley and Horry are Veterans!!!! That definitely counts for something because Pop loves to play them!

Pop is the greatest coach ever I mean he never makes mistakes. With the way he motivates the team to his rotations and to his comments about " being on a trading committee"

Pop for President!

Here is my sad version.

Manu, Tony and Tim with how old this team is sorry you're not going to win!

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
I absolutely can't believe that this team has no youth on the bench..was James White so bad that he wasn't worth the $100,000 option that the Spurs cut him?

Why don't the Spurs go after Gerald Green, oh yeah because Pop hates young players!

He is athletic, and someone that we can actually throw lobs to in the game one a play breaks down, which happens so many times.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
From popcornmachine.net I see (I wasn't able to watch the game, a pity) that Finley was a -17 in 15 minutes and that Horry was a -13 in 17 minutes.

Horry played and Bonner didn't, not until garbage time anyway.

Manu started, alongside Tony and promptly wasted his first six minutes on the court getting frozen out for the Tim and Tony show.

Pop is incapable of learning. He is flat out fucking incapable. I am hopeful once Barry comes back that Fin will be out of the rotation, but I doubt that's ever going to happen. It's a serious long shot.

Bonner needs to take RoHo's spot, but that also won't happen. Pop would sooner play small than give Bonner playoff run.

Manu needs to be the 6th man of the year again. The problem is we don't have another shooting guard on the roster remotely competent enough to start, even with Parker and Duncan doing most of the heavy lifting. Can Barry start? Udoka?

So depressing.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
It seemed clear very early on that Tony was viewing this game as a two-man contest between him and Paul. Which would be fine if he'd get someone else involved in the offense, like Paul. Stampler is right about Manu, why the fuck start him if he's not going to touch the damn ball? And, as I've posted several times on this blog (hoping that I was wrong), I am more convinced then ever that Damon is indeed the reincarnation of Nick VE. Look, a guy that small has only one hope ... that he is quicker/faster than others. No doubt Damon once was. But those days are long gone, my friends, long gone.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
I googled it.  I also like Pop.  We losers are not on his level of thinking.  He has a master plan.  In June we'll all realize we are retarded and Pop was right.

go team!

Master plan?
Pop my have a master plan, but no plan should include playing Robert Horry. It's not that he is incapable of learning, he just isn't going to change anything. He is obnoxiously stubborn at this point, it's almost like he is playing Horry to spite everybody.

what?
If the Master plan includes playing Horry and Finley  extended minutes count the season over!!!

Yeah, what is the point of starting Manu when he doesn't take a shot until the second quarter?

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
If Barry is healthy then Pop should start Ime, and have Barry play with Manu and the second unit. I don't care that he can't play defense at least he can pass, dribble and shoot! Also Barry and Manu can play defacto point guards when Tony takes a rest!

Finley and Horry should just ride the bench the rest of the way..age has caught up with them!

Michael Howard Finley
Michael Finley is the consummate pro. Sharp dresser, classy, and he represents what is good about the NBA. However, his game just died over the summer. He didn't exactly shoot like Jerry West last season, but at least he was competent. His shooting is shockingly bad, I'll bet I could better him right now. Normally, I BS about something like that, but I seriously could outshoot him right now. If anything else, this season will prove, that some youth or at least younger players must be brought in. Basketball is indeed a young man's game.

Another thing...
I know this is game is now a part of ugly Spur basketball history. I was reading some comments from the previous game's post and someone brought a good point as to why Tony does a better job defending Allen Iverson than he does Chris Paul. Allen Iverson really wants to score, he can pass, but his first option is always shoot first, second and third. Players like this are difficult to defend yes, but guys that are like Chris Paul are nearly impossible to defend, I mean Bruce couldn't do anything with him either. Chris is truly a dual threat, he is as adept at scoring as he is passing and he is a better shooter than the Spurs seem to think he is, that going under the screen shit ain't gonna cut it if they face these dudes again. As someone else alluded to, Chris Paul really is that dude...He is the best point guard in the game right now and he might be the league MVP.

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Udoka is now injured, which means more time for the Finmonster.  I think the Spurs need to go 2-1 over the next brutal three games to win back some confidence and momentum.  But god (err...Odin), is that even possible?

The Spurs looked like clowns last night.  Can they really beat two of Philthy, Detroit, and Boston?

Boston and Detroit are loaded right now and Philthy is playing downright filthy at home.

Barry, please save us!

Re: Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain
Yes it can.  Bowen was suspended for tonight's game with Detroit (for going after a loose ball).

http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/51423/20080314/nba_suspends_spurs_bowen_one_game/

So Finley will start and we have nobody on the team to backup both him and Manu.  This is looking grim.  This is just what Rip needed to get him out of his shooting slump.

Loose ball?
Bowen kicked him. Going after a loose ball my ass, if anybody kicks me like that when I'm playing ball, that's a squabble starting. I'm sorry.

Re: Loose ball?
Watch the clip.  Bowen goes after a loose ball.  It looks like Paul racks Bowen, and then Bowen pushes Paul down.  It didn't look like a big deal to me, but if you are going to punish Bowen, you should punish Paul as well.

Seen it already...
I've seen this already. It doesn't change my opinion, I can't defend Bruce on this one. Let me put it like this, if Chris had hauled off and stilled on him, then okay I can see why he would have kicked him. That ain't how it happened though and while they were going after the loose ball that was mostly incidental contact, until Bruce kicked him. Just my opinion.
