Game Thread #27: Vs. Kings

I appreciate ATS more and more every day. Whenever you are, your next margarita is on me.

Tonight we have the first game of a back-to-back, and it would be great if we could finish this by the third quarter. Knowing the Spurs, though, it'll probably come down to the final minute with Tony, Manu and Timmy making clutch plays on both ends of the floor, and we'll have nothing left in the tank tomorrow against the Timberwolves.

(Another team that gets it. Wolves: scary as hell.)

More rambling and silly predictions after the jump.

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - Most difficult moment in this preview? To decide who was the Spurs' Paul: Manu or Tony. In the end I chose Tony, because I always liked George a lot more than Paul, and Manu still owns my heart. Sorry, Tony! You're stuck with John's shadow hanging over every lyric you'll write for the rest of your long, long, not-that-legendary life, with nothing but innumerable millions to keep you company after the latest divorce.

That done with, I put Udrih as a starter for the Kings despite his status being reported as day-to-day. He says he's going to play, though, and we all know there's nothing that could keep his indomitable will down. This will be his first game at the AT&T since Pop gave him the boot, and I for one am still looking forward to seeing Hill drop 40 on him (who didn't do it in November, but whatever). If that doesn't happen, Tony is still 10 times the point guard he'll ever be.
  • Off Guard - Kmart is still injured, and hasn't played since December 6th, when it was discovered that he hadn't healed from the ankle he'd sprained in early November. Francisco García hasn't been completely bad in the shooting guard position, but he's still not good enough to lick Manu's stamps. The only thing of his I wish Manu had is the obviously Spanish surname, because it'd keep most of the idiots that say Manu is Italian at bay.
  • Center - Brad Miller is to Duncan what The JV is to everyone else. Miller tries, he has a nice medium-range jumper, can certainly pass the ball and I think I remember him making a 3-pointer or two. But at the end of the day, he's Brad Miller, and Duncan is Duncan.
  • Power Forward - Hawes is young, and at 20 years old he can do a little bit of everything: he can shoot the 2, sort of shoot the 3, kind of post up if you put a gun to his head, rebound, turn the ball over and even block some stray balls. I liked what little I saw of him, and he might grow into a good NBA player in a few years. Right now, though? I wouldn't pick any second-tier NBA players over My Man The Red Rocket. Show him how it's done, Matt.
  • Small Forward - In every team someone's got to score, and for the Kings that someone is Salmons. He's been carrying the scoring load for them this season, and he's the one guy we have to try to control tonight: when we played against them last month he scored 31 on 10-13 from the field. So yeah, he gets the nod over Findog, the uneven wonder.
  • Bench - Bobby Brown, Donte Greene, Quincy Douby. Do you know them? Me neither. The only guys from the Kings' bench that I know are Jason Thompson and Mikki Moore, and they're nothing to write home about. I don't think many teams would get the nod over the Spurs when it comes to bench prowess right now - at least not from me, and that's all I care about. Me me and me.
  • Coach - After the lovefest for Pop in last night's recap, who else could I pick? Certainly not used-to-be-assistant-coach-but-got-promoted-when-they-fired-his-boss Kenny Natt. Who might or might not have learned something working nine years under Jerry Sloan.
  • Intangibles - The Spurs beat the Kings by 2 measly points in November, and these were the spurs (Spurs without Manu and Tony). I like to think that Manu and Tony will be horrified at the thought of their team losing this time around, with them playing, and will thus give us that extra oomph that will turn this into a blow out. Yeah. I believe that.
  • Mojo - No-one has adamed us that I know of, the Kings just fired their coach (always a big minus in the karma department), and we let Beno go for a bag of chips and let him fulfil his dream of being paid millions to be mediocre. (Not to beat on a dead horse, but the mojo would skyrocket if I could link to the pics of those drunk Kings cheerleaders... Hint: Google is your friend. And he loves you.)
  • Winner - Oberto's injury will be felt, but we should still be able to win this one after a major struggle. ...Just kidding. We'll win this one. (Read: Once more, if we don't win this one, too, I'll slit my effing wrists. With Hipuks' razor wit.)

Keys to the game

  • Suckitude - We didn't suck against the Raptors, but considering it was the Raptors, it was hard to tell suckitude from non-suckitude. Not that Sacramento is any better. One thing's for sure: if we lose this one, we suck. So let's focus on not sucking and go from there. (Phil Jackson sucks.)
  • Softness - I'm pretty sure Snake Plissken wouldn't have let JO score 24 points on 12-20 shooting, and grab 4 offensive rebound to boot. So I don't think we deserve an upgrade in softness yet.
  • Hill - Hill didn't play much against the Raptors, but considering how Beno always seems to come alive when playing against Tony, maybe Cubits deserves another go at Beno "MySpace" Udrih.
  • Start strong - I don't believe in stats, but... we might as well.

Some other reading

Apparently there're not as many people in Sacramento as in Canada, but what the Sacramento blog arena lacks in quantity it makes up in quality. SB Nation's very own Sactown Royalty is a pretty nifty blog. And it's not just the hundreds of interesting posts and PTR-like banter, no. Just click on the link and scroll down till game #27's thread.

Other things of possible interest

I wanted to share with you this quote:

"He worked his tail off last year to really get that contract that he hadn't had," said Kenny Natt, the Kings' interim coach after Reggie Theus' ouster last week. "My objective right now is to get him back to where he was — hungry, like he was last year."

Natt on Beno Udrih, quoted by Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News. (Thanks to Sactown Royalty - hope they don't mind my blatant theft. Even though I'd linked to this article above, I'd missed this gem.)

"Hunger". That's just how I would describe Beno. Then again I can't be too mad about Beno when he's the reason The Best Gif In The Entire World exists:

Recap:  No one has this one, I believe. If you feel like making Beno cry, this is your chance. Guidelines.

A friend of mine’s father always refered to Gino as the “Italian Assassin.” Mostly because my friend’s Dad is Itailian and because Manu can ball….and oh yeah, he is a basketball Assassin.

Kenny Natt is the Sacto Interim coach?!?!? Wow. Wonder what other miscellaneous 70s NBAers will turn up? Kevin Grevey? Brian Winters? Alvin Adams? Goo Kennedy?

Wow, bones. Those old NBA references made my heart go aflutter. Those were the good old days, except for the awful physical play, the horrible uniforms, the utter lack of defense, and Jack Ramsey’s sport coats.

And Doug Moe. I hated that guy.

I would think Manu would be Paul McCartney

and Beno would be Pete Best since he got shipped out

It was a tough choice, really. Especially because Paul gets so much credits for the Beatles’ lyrics, when John later claimed all he did was Yesterday. But as I said, I prefer George.

I gotta go with Bren on this one.

Manu has to be Paul.

However, if it were U2, then Manu would definitely be Bono.

am i the only one who feels uncomfortable giving final score predictions? i feel like i’m jinxing them…

by sleep research facility on Dec 22, 2008 6:35 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No jinxing here. It’s been done for eons, and it’s completely legit pre-game. It’s DURING the game that score predictions, individual play, potential outcomes, etc. cannot be discussed. When that happens, you’re actively engaging in “adaming” the team. In addition, score predictions ARE monitored. If you choose to repeatedly predict against San Antonio, you will be flagged. Or flogged. Whichever, they’re both bad.

We lose no mojo when making predictions. If you feel a lack of peace about it though, I recommend abstaining. The gut is the best indicator of mojo, and going against that invites badness.

by SgtinManusArmy on Dec 22, 2008 7:08 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i know its been done for ever, but personally i’ve never liked making predictions about sporting events (ever since i was a little kid when i think i made a prediction and the person/team i picked to win got thrashed).

i don’t care that anyone else does it, i just feel if i make a prediction, its bad karma.

I really hope this is a blowout, the win against the Raptors wasn’t satisfying. This would be like going out with a fat chick with a cute face after a dry spell, you know those ones, the ones you go, wow, if she lost some weight she’d be very attractive, but then when she actually loses weight her body goes skinny and her face remains chubby and then it just looks like a ridiculous human bobblehead doll and you wish she would go back to the way she was before but are afraid you’d look like a chubby chaser weirdo if you actually ask her to put on more weight so you just shut up about and remember the old saying, " be careful what you wish for".
I got a little sidetracked, the point is, it would be good for our confidence.

Movie Spurs

O.K. If they ever made a movie about our phenomenal team, which actors would you choose to portray our team and coaching staff? (O.K., I know it won’t happen because it’s the San Antonio Spurs – but dream with me for a little while…)

I bring this up because every time I see the new Clint Eastwood promo for Gran Torino, I think of Greg "Get off My Lawn" Popovich. Exemplary casting don’t you think?

I have to think about the rest of the cast…. feel free to discuss.

Pangio Kuhli " Kuhli Loach". Pretty cool little guys that resemble snakes. They can withstand higher temperatures and have a spine on in front of their eyes for defense. They like to burrow in the substrate, and there’s stories of fishkeepers that have thought they lost some Kuhli Loaches, only to find them years later under their undergravel filter, having bred and formed colonies.
