Mt. Mutombo?

Not done
Once Dikembe Mutombo passes out his gifts, he hopes to return to the NBA for a final season, possibly with the Celtics.

The 7-foot-2-inch, 260-pound center said last week he hopes to sign with a team after spending Christmas with his family in Atlanta. The four-time Defensive Player of the Year said among the teams that have shown interest are Boston, San Antonio, and Miami. The former Rocket also said Houston has "not answered me." The 42-year-old, who has blocked 3,278 shots during his 17-year career, said he is in "good shape" from working out three hours a day with spinning classes, yoga, and weightlifting.

"You'll see me in the next two weeks," Mutombo said. "I will be somewhere. I really need to go back to playing. I've just got to make sure that I go to a place where I can be happy. There are about four to five teams that I've been looking at and about seven teams that have shown interest. It's up to me to make my decision."

This is from a Boston Globe article that ran today. Could be just a guy throwing around teams, or it could be that the Spurs reached out to him and showed some interest. I would think, given he still lives in Houston, that SA might be a preferred place for him to land, if they want him.

Save the old man jokes. Yes, he might be Pop's age. But we have all said that what the Spurs are lacking is a defensive big that does not need the ball. That statement defines Deke to the point that it will probably be on his tombstone when he dies.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but he would be a big help come playoff time against the Lakers, Hornets, and Celtics of the world.

Discuss. Is this a good idea? And who loses their roster spot if it is?

This is a joke right?

No – it was a real article in the Boston Globe. Scroll down to read the part about Dikembe.

The joke may be that it’s not the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. I think he could be good for 15 minutes a game locking down the paint. Another point here might be that he has always given Tim fits defensively and signing him keeps him off of another roster. Not saying it should be done, but it’s worth thinking about and I’m a little scared to admit that. ’Cause it sounds crazy.

Thats what Mahinmi is for

why waste space on a 40 year old, when you have a guy half his age, if all you need is energy and rebounding, Mahinmi can do that

this is just speculation, and a ridiculous one at that.

plus, he might even do more

He had great numbers in the Dleague and we dont know what he can offer yet, so his ceiling is pretty high and they need to start working him in now, he doesnt really have much else to prove in the Dleague

totally agree. why bring in deke when we have invested time in ian.

who are you who can summon fire without flint or tinder? there are some who call me ... tim.

by ptruser on Dec 16, 2008 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

why not, if it’s low-risk. especially when Pop said he doesn’t know when Ian will see court time.

by znimrod on Dec 16, 2008 3:25 PM CST up reply actions

Wasn’t “low-risk” the modifier used to describe potentially bringing Marbury in to spell Tony (before we saw what George was capable of)? What’s the real difference here, aside from talent levels? The ’bury situation was relatively the same, in that if he ended up being a cancer we could immediately waive him. Everyone seems to be onboard this one though; a talented veteran brought in to fill a need….. seems similar to me.

by SgtinManusArmy on Dec 16, 2008 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

except that marbury is a dumbass, and it wouldn’t take a trial period to find out that he is a cancer – it’s written all over his head. deke is no dumbass nor a cancer, and he would fit in well here because he’s old. all that aside, i guess it’s similar.

Didn’t Scottie Pippen pull this same stunt a while back? You wanna come back so you just start randomly throwing out the names of contenders to get your name back on people’s radar screens?

well...

as much as i hoped for Ian to impress me this season, and he’s still MIA. Also we have no clue how he would handle the pressure of the playoffs. He is french by the way, he could fold. Face it, our front court defensive depth is thin. Bonner likes to get lit up by average players, and Oberto//KT aren’t much better.

Mutumbo had a great year for houston last season. I am hoping he’d sign the veteran minimum, but like spurschief said, i’d rather have him on my team instead of another team, like BAHston.

plus he’s already been doing our offseason conditioning (yoga) to keep his oldness in check (wish findog and RoHo did that last year). In the words of Pop, “He’s a Spur”.

Mutumbo’s the man(his interviews are classic), but he’s just too old now. The age of 42 isn’t correct. Yeah, I know that’s his listed age, but Mutumbo can’t be a day younger than 48.

We need a poll, like with Crapbury. PTR has a lot of influence on these matters.

by LatinD on Dec 15, 2008 8:45 PM CST reply actions

Why not?

he is not like Scottie, he’s been playing until last season. For the veteran minimum he could be a great 12th man who could play 7-10 mins against some big frontcourts like the lakers or suns. At least he can grab more rebounds in 10mins than kurticio in 25

The Spurs waived Blake Ahearn today. Did they do it to make room for Mutumbo on the roster?

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Dec 16, 2008 12:05 AM CST reply actions

did we completely cut him or is he playing on the toros still?

yeah, i was just gonna mention this same thing. it could be a move for mutombo, who knows.

i’m still trying to decide if i like it or not. we do need some rebounding and shot-blocking, but he is pretty freakin’ old.

by znimrod on Dec 16, 2008 8:44 AM CST up reply actions

I’d take a big man who could clog the paint for 8-10 minutes a game while Duncan is on the bench. Mutumbo is freaking tall and is hard to shoot over.

Oh well, we’ll see. If we do get him, it won’t be to log very many minutes.

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Dec 16, 2008 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with you, right up to the point when the block occurs and the finger-wagging begins. Ah, I’m not sure I’d be able deal with that from someone wearing the silver and black.

I think you’d get over yourself quickly enough.

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Dec 16, 2008 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

i know i would. the minute he sent some shot from dirk, terry, or some such fool like that back in their face, i would forget all my previous thoughts and intentions i used to have for him (not that i had many bad ones for the guy, but i did find his finger-wagging annoying, especially when he blocked one of our shots).

by znimrod on Dec 16, 2008 9:22 AM CST up reply actions

But it’d take me longer to get over him finger-wagging while ignoring the path of his blocked shot that went back to the opposition and is now being dunked behind his turned back

It’s happened before – I saw the youtube evidence. You can’t deny it!

oh —

— well, that makes a lot more sense.

But one came because the player didn’t perform well, and the other hurt his team because he put himself first. It’s a lot easier for me to forgive the former than the latter.

Still, it’s an excellent point that I was judging him b/c of one instance.
