Spurs vs Kings 11/16/2008

I wasn't too entirely sure of what to expect in tonight's game against the Kings. Sure they were missing Kevin Martin but which team doesn't get their juices flowing to play against Tim Duncan and his merry band of bandits. So with that I mind I gave us of a 50/50 chance of pulling this out.

First quarter the boys came out flat. Stagnant offense and wimpy defense. I think the ball was pushed up the court once by the Spurs and that was by Timmy. Led up to a nice 23-15 hole after one. We come to play in quarter two at least as studs like Jacque Vaughn, Mike Finley, Matt Bonner and Timmy put on a show and do exactly the opposite of what they did for the first 12 minutes. Awesome. The highlights here most concentrate on the fact that the Kings got nothing going and we put up nearly 30 points in a quarter with the aforementioned line up.

So that quarter was so great they took the next one off. Defense never showed up and the scoring came too late. Four point lead for the Kings going into the fourth. The teams even it up and start trading baskets late in the game. When the Spurs take the lead they hold it and manage to play some "Championship caliber" defense. Two airballs for game winning attempts? I'll take that anyday. A couple of blocks, lay ups and the Spurs made chicken salad took the W, 90-88.

Notes: Ime Udoka didn't play. At all. Neither did Kurt Thomas. Finley started in Udoka's spot making for a line up of Hill, Mason, Finley, Duncan, Oberto

Did you see Michael Finley's jam on Brad Miller's face in the 3rd quarter. It got a big "whoa" from the crowd. Fin brought his good sneakers for this game.

Jacque Vaughn was not The JV tonight. He was Jacque Vaughn. Everybody has their day and this was his. No matter how awkward he looks trying to break anybody off the dribble.

Matt Bonner beat Spencer Hawes off the dribble.

I'm serious.

Spencer Hawes is not a very good defender.

ATS brought up free throw shooting in the game thread and then Timmy misses two critical free throws that gave the Kings one last chance at winning the game, when he could've iced it. Something in the water I guess.

Quincy Douby, Chris Quinn, Ramon Sessions, Nicholas Batum. All in the same category of guys that should not be having the game of their lives against the Spurs. And then they did.

John Salmons used cheat codes in order to hit every shot he attempted.

Three Stars!!! (aside from Tim Duncan)

Red Rocket: 4-9, 3-5 from behind the arc 11pts 7 boards

Finley: Had better shot selection

Mason: hit the damn shots he took.

The JV couldn’t share part of a star?

Maybe one or two of the points?

I gotta say that I agree with werd. You have something special against the JV? (Besides what we all do, I mean.) Credit where it’s due.

That said, I got a huge +1 to give to your cheat code comment. Very funny.

Good work – thanks for the recap.

Sweet notes. Loved them.

The JV had to be in your 3 stars, though, I think.

Anyone knows why KT and Udoka didn’t play?

watching last nights game, it occured to me that we have seen a number of bench guys from our opponents who could help us right now. that list came back to me when i read you list of guys who should not be having the games of their lives: Quincy Douby, Chris Quinn, Ramon Sessions, and John Salmons. for good measure, i want to add Bobby Brown to that list. there are probably others, but i cant remember any off the top of my head at the moment.

my guess is that pop wanted to save some legs for tomorrow so he nailed KT and Ime to the bench. maybe those guys will play lots of minutes tonite.

well done recap, r21x

Not gonna lie. I was over at a friends house watching the Cowboy game and missed JV’s breakout. It’s great to know that he’s finally turned the corner and developed into a Billupsesque point guard. Can’t wait to see his encore performance tonight.

I like the homeless crackhead look Salmons has going. Avoids all the unpleasant attention from the fans when he is out on the town. He just wears an old smelly coat and they don’t even give him a second look.

What happened to the once proud Kings franchise? That team has fallen on extreme hard times. Remember when they had the loudest and most faithful crowd in the NBA? Those seem like long ago memories.

The Spurs are really scaring me. I am keeping an eye on the standings to make sure tank in 08 goes as planned. We at least need to not make the playoffs, but I want a real crash and burn bottom out so we have more ping pong balls. Only problem is, half the teams in the NBA have the same idea we have. So, that is making me jittery.

Will provide big men updates as the college basketball season progresses.

Dude, there is almost zero, certainly negligible, chance we don’t make the playoffs.

I think the sad, disgusting part of the NBA is that even without Manu and Tony we are still a good team (by NBA standars) and can sneak into the playoffs.

But, bring on the big men updates. Your post the other day about Thabeet and Griffin forced me to go take a look at draftexpress.com. Only 4 guys they project in the first round are 6’ 10" or taller. And none of those guys are probably really as tall as they are listed.

CC, you take depressing me and turn it into a highly paid professional sport. We’ll make the playoffs.

Good recap.

It could be interesting to see if that was the real reason Udon’tka and KT didn’t get any burn last night. I can understand KT, him being all old an chit, but Udon’tka is kind of still younger. We’ll see tonight.

The 3 stars should have been (in no particular order for fear of showing favoritism) Findog, Bonedog and The JV (one game does not warrant removal of the "The")
