McDyess waived by Denver. Popovich asks Holt to open his wallet.

Not really, but you know this conversation is happening as we speak:
Popovich: Pete, we need more veteran leadership what with the new guys we're going to start playing.
Holt: But you had me resign Mike, Kurt, and Jacque. You assured me they were worth the $12 million I've committed for 2 more years. Savvy veterans who know how to play the right way, you gushed. I tried telling you Pop that, unlike wine, athletes do not get better with age. I suggested we get some young guys on the cheap and save the cap space for 2009 free agency.
Popovich: (a moment of silence while stroking his Gandalf beard) Have you seen these "young guys" play?
Holt: You mean guys who have a ton of energy, run the floor, go after rebounds, make quick defensive rotations?
Popovich: Disheartening, isn't it? That kind of reckless abandon has no place in a man's game.
Holt: So who are you looking at?
Popovich: Antonio McDyess
Holt: Hasn't he had like 3 knee surgeries?
Popovich: Exactly! Surgically repaired means they're reinforced.
Holt: (scratching head) What can he do?
Popovich: He brings toughness.
Holt: Like Kurt Thomas?
Popovich: He can hit the 12 footer facing the basket.
Holt: LIke Kurt Thomas?
Popovich: He can grab interior defensive rebounds.
Holt: You mean like...
Popovich: WHAT DO YOU KNOW? YOU SELL CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT!!
Holt: (awkward silence) Pop, love the beard.

This is like reality, only that I doubt Holt’s the wise one, and the young guns aren’t that good. And I’d like McDyess right now, for this year.
But it won’t happen.
In fact
Sorry, Jason, I mean no offense, but I really have to analyze this line:
Holt: You mean guys who have a ton of energy, run the floor, go after rebounds, make quick defensive rotations?
Have a ton of energy: Check. That one’s true. Love the energy.
Run the floor: They do run a lot.
Go after rebounds: They probably go after them, but they sure haven’t caught many.
Make quick defensive rotations: Snort. This one was the deal-breaker. What defense are you talking about? I don’t have stats, but we have to be one of the worst defensive teams so far. And I know it’s not the young guys’ faults, but I sure don’t remember them getting any stops.
So let’s not glorify these kids just yet, please. Tolliver’s rushed 3s were painful, and Hill’s way shakier than Beno ever was on offense. Farmer? Who?
care to update any of this in light of the Knicks game?
I am calm, filling myself with patience - Manu Ginobili
Sure: I was completely wrong.
No, not really. But it was a good outing for our scrubs, and our D worked. It’s too early to tell.
If anyone followed the game thread, they know I was particularly enthused regarding Hill’s potential. So I might have to review my statement about Hill being shakier than Beno on offense if he keeps it up. And despite him having some flashy rebounds/steals, Hill’s defense wasn’t perfect, either.
Regarding Tolliver’s lack of rebounding ability… He’s a high energy player, and that translated itself in some good offensive boards last night. We’ll see. That said, he still looked a bit lost at points last night, and his shot selection was horrible.
So, I’ll repeat myself: Tolliver’s rushed 3s were painful, and Hill’s game needs to improve if we expect to survive.
Farmer? Who?
No offense taken; I appreciate the criticism
I got carried away. I meant that once they learn how they’re supposed to rotate, it’ll be quicker.
I don’t watch any of the games; I rely on all of you for my Spurs info. This is just a guess, but I think the staff has visions of Hill being Speedy Claxton and Mason being whom Derek Anderson was supposed to be. Once Manu and Tony get healthy, I think it’ll fall into place, but probably too late.
