PYPWYM-Is: The FinDog
[From the FanPosts. I've already sent a team of dogs out to find Powell and Stampler. Or were they wolves? -yfbb]
In episode two of Put Your Pride Where Your Mouth Is, weigh in on the FinDog. What do you think we will get from him this year? What would you be happy with? What is the sign of the apocalypse?
As Powell -- do you guys remember Powell? -- so astutely put it when they resigned him, not many players get better from 35 to 36. That's a true statement.
Also, I don't think Finley had a very good year last year. He didn't shoot well at all, he seemed hesitant to shoot on too many occasions, and he struggled defensively against a lot of players.
I'd be ecstatic if the FinDog was below 20 minutes per game and shot 40% for the year. Not from 3pt, but from the field. I'll be giddy if he can get his 3 pt shooting up into the 42-43% range. If Mike is logging 25+ minutes a game and shooting 35-36% from 3 pt range my morale will be cratering as I watch our offense struggle.
Unfortunately and sadly, I think the FinDog will be going more toward Robert Horry land this year. I don't see me busting out the big FinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnDoggggggggggggg!!!!! this year very many times, and I see a more wincing at off-balance fadeaway jumpers.
So bring it fellas (what's the female equivalent for fellas?). What do you think the FinDog has in store for us this year?
DennardC, you are dead-on. We don't have accountability. We are fans. What we would do makes no difference. I'm only going for people stating a position and being honest enough to say they were wrong. Or, in Bones' case, that they were right.
PS - Donte Greene didn't play for the Rockets tonight? What gives?
PS2 - Ok, really, where are Stampizzle and Powell? It's just not the same around here without the evil overlord.
PS3 - I answered a bunch of questions for a Blazers blog called The Rip City Project. I'll let you know (if and) when they get posted.
PS4 - The first preseason game is this Thursday against the Rockets. I have low hopes that we will be able to watch it anywhere, but the NBA is providing the radio broadcasts. If anybody has more info on it, I'd like to have it.

i think he worked real hard on his conditioning this summer, and seems in good shape, so i’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’ll be the same as last year. his trainer in chicago said they worked a lot on his lateral movement, so i’m guessing we’ll see more pump fakes on the open jumpers with a lateral dribble or two for a more contested jumpshot. i don’t know if his shooting stroke will stay the same, so maybe i’m hoping for too much. i really would hate to see him as useless as horry was, but i didn’t see a lot from him last year to indicate that he will perpetuate horry’s suckdom. to me, horry set a bar last year that will be very hard to reach, even for old man findog. maybe i’m too much of the “glass half full” approach on this one, we’ll see.
sign of the apacolypse – if he’s still starting in the second half of the season. i’m assuming that he will at the start the season, but it can’t be good for us if he continues to after MANU comes back. if we still need MANU to come off the bench, i’m hoping mason will be the starter instead. but i’m also hoping that mason will provide more scoring than most people had originally anticipated, and that will free Pop to start MANU. as i said earlier, we’ll see.

What I’d like to see from Fen-Phen:
At least a team average shooting percentage and no more than 65% of the minutes per game he played last year — and no starts past the season’s halfway mark.
What I think he has in store for us:
More playing time, less threes, more bad shot selection and less defence than I’d like to see, unless Pop benches him like a rookie point guard who just made back-to-back turnovers.

its official
ATS has started the season (err, pre-season) with a vengence. he firing bullets like he’s that big red fake kids toy from SNL – spitting out that red syrup all over the walls and carpet…..
on the findog, i am OK with him being back. before, i said that i didnt want him. in a perfect world, he would be gone but there wasnt anyone preferrable to him out there in his salary range. i want to see fewer minutes, fewer attempts – basically fewer across the board. if he can play the RoHo role from, say the 05 season, I would be thrilled.
i am also hoping that mason will start the season in the starting 5. finley would play behind manu, bruce, ime and mason at least. basically he would get about the same minutes as matt bonner.

So its ok with you if he hits the game-winning shot in a crucial game in the finals. That’s good of you.

the one positive thing i’ll say about finley is that there really wasn’t a better option for a player who is paid like he’s getting the 7, 8, or 9 spot in the rotation and will not top 15 minutes a game for the season. he’s getting close to the veteran’s minimum, i think, and for that price, he’s better than most else available.
i have to give mike credit that he seems to be ok with a small role. if he takes that reduced playing time and runs with it and DOES NOT start, that’s a good buy for the spurs.
on the other hand, and probably the more important hand, the spurs have to get away from thinking they can put stationary shooters on the perimeter for 20 seconds of the shot clock and have a winning offense. it doesn’t help matters that we just signed a to-be-36-year-old player that will undoubtedly be slower this year, even if his FG% stays consistent.
we need players that can move off the ball and create shots. finley does not do that. he waits for other players to create opportunity and dish him the ball. asking finley to drive is like asking bowen to keep doing that finger roll move he fell in love with at the end of last season (although, to bruce’s credit, he made that shot waaay more than i thought he would).
you ain't a beauty but hey you're alright.

I voted Horry
But I think he should be somewhere b/t the Finley of the past two seasons and the 07-08 Horry.
If he shoots 42-43 from 3pt % the Spurs can use their next 1st rounder on a 4th string pg from Greenland, thats how happy Id be.
Unfortunately, I think he’ll be needed way too much early in the season, thus he will likely tire out.

I voted Clang, but I’m not ruling out him annoying the hell out of us all season, only to hit a game winning 3 against someone in the playoffs because that’s what our washed up stars do in odd years for some fucking reason or other. Not saying it will happen, just saying.
Plus, watching him play this year will probably assist me in my usual game ritual… I could make it a drinking game! Every shot he misses, i take one of my own!

I Blame Pop & RC Buford....
….for the collection of “talent” that has been assembled. As far as Findog is concerned, I just hope he is able to make open J’s this year because he didn’t shoot the rock that well last.

Is it the truth?
I feel the same way, but I’ve been wondering if that’s actually the case — who wants to look it up for us and tell us what his actual percentages were last year? And for context, what was it the year before and what were the team’s numbers last year?

Great. I knew someone would come through with the data.
So, although it may have seemed as though he was lousy last year, he wasn’t really shooting the 3 worse than the year before — and his overall #s were right in line with his last 3.
But, in order to truly measure a player, it’s not just necessary to judge him against himself, but (since he plays on a team) also look at the team’s overall FG#s — since any shot he takes is one that a teammate cannot.
So, how about it ATS — can you get the team’s #s too?
p.s. Also, I wonder what his FG % was for that pump-fake-dribble-step-akward-fall-away last year.

spurs 3-pt FG% last 3 years: 38.5, 38.1, 63.9
spurs overall FG% last 3 years: 47.2, 47.4, 45.7
about 3.73%

oops, that 63.9 is 36.9

My expectation of Finley is a repeat of last season …. which means he won’t be good enough to fill the role asked of him.
Finley could still be useful as an end of bench guy, but the team needs more from him than that. They need that fourth scorer, and starting wing to allow Manu to come off the bench. The team is asking too much of Finley at this stage of his career.

I believe Matthew’s point regarding Finley was that his mere presence is a disruption of our offense and therefore is a liability.
Pop seems to have no problem forcing everything to work around Finley instead of expecting Finley to fit in like everybody else. With that in mind, and because Finley is actually somehow worse coming off the bench, we should get used to him starting and playing way too much.
If he is better than last season then we are in luck. Still, he would need to be significantly better to warrant that ludicrous contract they gave him. The second year is already an albatross looming in the distance. What were they thinking? I think drafting CDR would have been an obvious step towards addressing our scoring problem from the wing.
The Spurs out-think themselves too often. Having high character valedictorians on the team is positive in many ways, but doesn’t necessarily mean they will actually be able to contribute to the team in needed, quantifiable ways.
Hopefully Mason Jr. will be able to step right into big minutes. He seems too smart, or paradoxically, not dumb enough to step right in and not worry about the SYSTEM and where he needs to be at every moment.
Hopefully Mason can help us in a big way.
